  • Listen to Lawrence Hendra discuss this rare portrait of Maria Clementina Sobieska, wife of the exiled James III, mother of Charles Edward Stuart, and one of the wealthiest heiresses in Europe.
It is dated 1720 and was likely one of the ‘10 Pictures’ for which the Jacobite court painter Antonio David was paid ten pistoles by the Stuart court. In 1719, David had painted a portrait of Maria for dispatch to England and the ‘10 Pictures’ were most likely copies and versions of Maria’s likeness to be shared amongst loyal Jacobite supporters at home and abroad.
