Thanks for watching! Go for it on the fountain! We have had a number of pre-fab above ground fountains in that same location and they usually work well for one season and then the finish degrades or the pump dies. I installed our DIY in ground fountain four years ago and it is still flawless. The heater lets us and the birds enjoy it year round.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I haven't had any hard water stains, but mine is in the shade and does get slimy, brown streaks on the outside and will build up some 'sludge' in the bottom of the blue pot. So far I've had good luck adding a little algaecide every few weeks and draining it once a year and brushing it with Simple Green. Here's the algaecide I'm using: beckettus.com/product/beckett-algaecure-algaecide-for-ponds-and-fountains-32-oz/
I really enjoyed watching your video on draining and cleaning a fountain, esp. the part about putting in a heater. It doesn't get really cold in Atlanta but may consider it on the off chance of freezing weather here, just to be safe. I have let my fountain go for a couple of years and am putting it back together myself. I have been watching several videos and so far, so good, but when I fill the basin with water, the pump pushes the water up into the urn but with the hole in the bottom of the urn the water flows right back into the basin. Is there something I should be using to fill up that gap? Besides the pump being up through the hole, there is also wiring for a submersible light that sits inside the urn. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated! And, thanks for the tip of the algaecide in your reply below. P.S. Love your cat videos...I'm down to four now.
We are about mid-way through the fall leaves dropping here in north Mississippi, I'm hoping all the leaves will drop before we get any freezing weather. I have a very small fountain that I'll shut down for the season and I'll reinstall the heater in my other two once the weather drops to freezing. The birds seem to enjoy the warm water, even when it's above freezing. My urn had a 1" hole in the center of the bottom and I ran the pipe through that hole and sealed around the pipe with some plumber's epoxy so there is no way for the water to drain out of the urn. www.oatey.com/products/oatey-fixit-stick-epoxy-putty-1829259701 Glad you enjoy the cat videos, our oldest cat passed away this year and our remaining cat is definitely slowing down. Gotta hug them while you can!
That is a great idea! I was looking to install my fountain now and was worried about the winter, but the heater element is great!

Thanks. How do you clean the blue part from hard water stains? I have the same one.
