That wasn't the writers shitting on him. That was the writers falling in love with Will Friedle and wanted to give him as much comedic freedom as possible.

hoenstly even when the writers dumbed him down he had more emotionally profound moments than the rest of them, and he was very clearly the most emotionally intelligent throughout the show. i just wish when it came to serious moments they'd take him seriously bc hed have a LOT of great points but everyone would crack up at the thought of eric sounding smart. idk mayb I'm j sensitive bc he reminds me of me kinda and I'm so scared I'm actually a total dumbass and everyone will see that soon lol but like until they made him a total buffoon in season 7, he was actually smart, just not in a conventional way. he honestly coulda tried to become a therapist or smth bc he was very good with people. idk hopefully I'm making sense lol Im js eric got too much slack despite actually bein kinda smart ykwim?? idk
the writers did him dirty, he deserved better, such a fun, smart and caring character at first but during s6 and s7 he just became the guy that has no point in existing other than to make stupid jokes which was so unfair

I guess that tells me I'm not a shallow girl, lol. But seriously, in that stage of his life, I could see his good looks, but that and his personality, even with his weight gain and much shorter hair, I could see myself loving him as a person first and then falling in love with him.
