This performance was filmed at a concert given by the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble in 2014 at the Linder Auditorium, Johannesburg. Kabelo and Simiso both began their studies at Buskaid, and continued learning the violin there until they travelled to the UK to study at the Royal Academy of Music.
Virtuoso compositions for one solo violinist abound, particularly in 19th century repertoire. But it is rare to find a work written for two virtuoso violins and orchestra, with almost equal demands made on each soloist, and Sarasate seems to have cornered the market for this particular combination. Navarra, written in 1889, gives both soloists ample opportunity to demonstrate their virtuosic skills (and the many, many hours of painstaking practice required to refine them) through left hand pizzicato, trills, harmonics, and rapid, high passage work.
The Buskaid Music School is situated in Diepkloof Soweto, and offers high quality string tuition to the local, less privileged community. In 2022 Buskaid celebrates its 25th Anniversary.

The bowing technique of the soloists is really good sautille and staccattos crisp intonation and musicality in excess! Sarasate so rarely heard besides the Carmen and a few virtuoso solo violin showpieces! Great programming !
