    I just want to say that I am a 34 year old, busy mom of four and I built this by myself this morning, while they were at school. The only trouble I ran into was that the wood I was using is very green and therefore not dried out. I had to plane the wood on the ends to make it fit in the brackets. Other than that, it was smooth sailing. My husband did help me pick up the legs to insert them into the brackets, but it was so easy! Anyone can do this! My kids are loving it right now.

    • @room2zoom236

      Way to go! Yes, it's not a bad project at all. The brackets measure 5 9/16", which provide the best fit for most of the lumber out there. Most lumber will fit right on without any problem. Most lumber in the store will not be totally dry, but it won't measure more than the 5 9/16" of the brackets. But sometimes the lumber yard will get a green/wetter shipment, and you can usually keep it dry and wait a few days for it to dry out and shrink.

    I just finished assembling the swing set and it looks like it will be a great set. It seems to be solid. Also, it was achievable. By that, I mean that as a first timer, a big fort project would take forever to complete. With this set, it took probably 6 hours to over a few days but I did a few extra efforts. I had plenty of time to prep though because due to COVID it took several weeks to get the brackets.
    My daughter is about 50lb and based on watching her, I agree that it doesn’t seem to need additional anchoring due to the width of the base. Maybe as she gets bigger or more kids are on at the same time, that might change. We’ll see.
    A couple things to note on my set that may help others out:
    1. Only 10 of the lock nuts are required as opposed to the 18 noted in the video.
    2. Started with 4x4x12 legs and cut 2 of them to 10’ and the other 2 to 10’6” to account slope of my yard. The scrap wood I used as practice for #3.
    3. I did some sanding and also took a 1/4 round over router bit and knocked off the edges of the legs just to reduce the possibility of splinters for when someone bangs into a leg. It didn’t affect how the legs fit into the brackets. They fit just fine.
    4. Used pressure treated lumber and treated the ends with the brown stuff but in hindsight that was probably not necessary with pressure treated so you could save yourself a few bucks and effort. My lumber was pretty wet when I got it but seemed to dry out a bit over a couple of weeks prior to staining. Also, I asked room2zoom about this and they reminded me to use anti corrosion hardware rated for pressure treated lumber.
    5. Used the recommended Headlock screws but predrilled with 3/16 bit to reduce risk of splitting
    6. I agree it was a 4 person job to safely tip it up after assembling the legs.
    7. Put all swing hardware and brackets on the beam and mark strap locations first while it was on the ground (without the legs on) as opposed to while on a ladder and working overhead, and then put on the legs last.
    8. After about a month, the wood (4x6 beam) shrank a bit more as it dried and this induced some play into the swing hangers. I had to tighten them a bit and will continue to check over the course of the summer. Hopefully the shrinking is mostly complete.
    Great set. Great video.
    Thanks

      If you happen to have a Sam's club membership, they sell a really nice, high quality, 40" one in the warehouse for $50. Other than that, the Trekassy spider swing on Amazon is pretty good, although you do have to do some assembly. Pay attention to the size of it when buying on Amazon--you want a 40" or bigger--all the vendors put up fake images with tiny miniaturized versions of kids to make the swing look bigger.

  • @alexanderlorati2509
    @alexanderlorati2509 4 года назад

    If going from the middle of the beam and measuring out 15 inches on both sides (30 inches) how does a 40 inch in diameter spider swing fit into that space? Does the spider swing hit into the other standard swings when swinging or otherwise? Trying to make sure I have my spacing correct. Thank you.

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  4 года назад +3

      You can position the spider swing's hanging straps anyway you like. I like the straps angled in towards each other a bit, or about 30 inches apart, because then the spider swing when going to the sides will tilt more sideways to hold the rider on the spider swing. As I stated in the video, using the straps to hang the spider swing is nice because it allows you to change the separation of the straps/ropes hanging the spider swing, which will change the "action" on the spider swing. If, for instance you placed the straps 40 inches apart--the same width as the spider swing itself--when the spider swing goes to the sides the swing itself will stay perfectly horizontal as it traveled to the sides. And if you place the straps even closer together than 30 inches, the swing will tilt even more to the side as it travels to the sides. As for the spider swing hitting the other regular swings, when a rider wants to get kinda crazy on the spider swing and go in huge circles, which will reach almost all the way to the legs of the set, you first drape the two regular swings over the legs of the set, where they will stay out of the way of the spider rider.

    When you measure from the end of swing beam to install the outside swings, are you actually measuring from the end (which is inside the bracket) or from the end which is actually visible outside the bracket? (so actually 4” from the real end).

      @room2zoom236  Год назад +1

    swing hanger question:
    the link you have includes the changes, but shows carriage bolts....did you just use the hex bolts through the top for added stability?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  Год назад +1

      Yes, I link to swing hangers that now include lag screws. When I originally created the link to these swing hangers they did not include the lag screws/bolts. But yes, I tend to prefer using a hex bolt and nut that passes all the way through the beam for the reason--although somewhat improbable--that over time maybe one day the lag screws might make their way loose in an aging beam. Or maybe a combination of this with the other possibility that the builder predrills holes for the lag screws that are too big, and the lag screw eventually works its way out. Those are some of the reasons, and having said all that, the lag screws are plenty strong if you want to go that route. Even though this is too long and complicated an answer, I like to show in the videos how to build a great swing set very simply, with me taking some of the guesswork out of it.

  • @rickyberger458

    Why are you using the 1/2" washers? Is it for the thickness of the washer? Why not use 3/8" fender washers? Wouldn't it be the same? Just asking. Great video!! Just ordered my brackets today... cant wait!!

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  2 года назад +2

      Yes, you are right that the fender washer would also work. Thanks so much! The brackets will work great for you. One of the great things about these brackets is that they will work with any width top beam that is 5 1/2" high, so nowadays when the selection of 4x6 beams can be poorer or more costly, you have the option of making your own beam from three or four 2x6 boards screwed together. With four 2x6 boards you can do a larger span of the beam, such as 14 feet!

    Is there a reason you prefer douglas fir? I'm in the midwest and I'm worried the elements and bugs would cut the life down on douglas. What's your thoughts on pressure treated southern yellow pine vs douglas?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  11 месяцев назад +1

      A couple of reasons. I do prefer the looks of stained douglas fir to the look pressure treated. In most places of the country pressure treated is perhaps about the only choice though. Pressure treated is great for the reason that it holds up the best. You do need to check your bolts every year or so to ensure that they are in holding up fine as treated lumber can be corrosive to metal.

  • @barefootpirate

    I'm putting one together in a couple days. This is the same set up in doing but I'm thinking of going with a 12ft 4x6 because I want to try to squeeze in a trapeze swing too. What are your thoughts?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  3 года назад +4

      The 4x6 beam in the video is a 12 foot 4x6 beam. So, yes, I like using a 12 foot beam. But if you are thinking of making a set with the 2 regular swings, a spider swing, and a trapeze bar, 4 positions will not fit. Or maybe you are planning on doing the trapeze bar instead of the spider swing. But do not span more than 12 feet with the 4x6 beam--it would be loo long a span. (I say that in case you're tempted to use a 14 foot beam.) But you can use a longer beam if it sticks out past the brackets and legs on one side, were you might hang the trapeze bar. In other words, the brackets might be 12 feet apart from each other, but the beam might stick out past the brackets on one side by, say, 3 1/2 feet, where you could hang a trapeze bar. In this case you have a 15 1/2 foot beam. If you do this longer beam, you might consider adding a horizontal cross piece on the legs, forming the typical "A" frame structure, for added stability.

    • @barefootpirate
      @barefootpirate 3 года назад +1

      @@room2zoom236 thank you! I didn't realize this was a 12ftr. I went with a 12ftr and will most likely swap out the swing for trapeze when my daughter wants to use it.

    How much weight can the cross beam support? And would it still be strong enough if I increased the length of the legs to make it a little higher?

    • @stevegarrison5980
      @stevegarrison5980 3 года назад

      The strength of the cross beam is not effected by height. It is effected by length. I can't imagine any problems with the beam up to 12', with a 2" X 6". I would be more concerned about the strength of your chains, ropes, etc that you are hanging from the beam, as well as you bolts and other hardware. I do not know exactly how much weight a beam the size we're talking about can hold, but it is a lot more than you should ever be hanging from a swing set.

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  3 года назад

      I do not know how much the 4x6 beam will support, but yes, as has already been commented, it is the length of the beam that affects this more than the height. Do not use a beam longer than 12 feet. If you are making the set higher, using 4x4 legs longer than 10 feet, add a horizontal cross piece, forming the typical "A" frame, for added stability.

  • @robinsonservices5
    @robinsonservices5 3 года назад

    Hi, I just purchased the wood at Home Depot and the brackets are not fitting on the 4x6 beam. I am new to building. Should I get a handheld wood planer to shave some wood off to make it fit, or is there something else you recommend doing?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  3 года назад +1

      If you'll grab a tape measure or something and tell me what the measurements of the 4x6 beam are. If they are close to 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" then you can usually just wait a few days, keeping the beam where it won't get wet, and it will shrink the amount you need to fit the brackets. Or you can plane it as you suggest, but that is rarely required. If your measurements are closer to an actual 4" by 6", then you have nominally measured/cut lumber that is not as common but does exist, and you would have to plane it down. Most lumber measures closer to 3 1/2" by 5 1/2", and so you might have a piece that measures closer to 5 5/8" at most, and if the lumber is kept dry it will shrink down closer to 5 1/2". Also, a rubber mallet can be used to help coax it on. The brackets measure 5 9/16", which provide the best fit for most of the lumber out there.

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  3 года назад +1

      Yes, do not span more than 12 foot between brackets. You can use a third bracket, though these brackets do splay out (angle out) to the sides a bit--about a foot to the side with 10 foot 4x4 legs. Or you can overhang the beam past the brackets for a swing position outside past the legs. With any of these setups, add a horizontal piece on the legs, forming the typical "A-frame" structure, for added stability and strength.

So yes, you can go 3" wide using 2-2x6 in lieu of a 4x6 beam, or you might prefer to use 3-2x6, giving you a 4 1/2" width, and a bit more strength in the beam, and this also lets you place the bolts for the swing hanger hardware right thru the center of the middle 2x6.

      Yes, a good exterior stain is a good water repellent. And the wood preservative, as suggested in the video for treating the bottoms of the swing set's legs, will stop all insects.

      Yes, it is almost 9 feet tall as it stands, with the 60 degree angle between the legs. Yes, the legs can sit on dirt, having treated them with wood preservative or using pressure treated lumber.

    I’m assuming that if it is 9’ tall you used 10’ 4x4s…..what is the spread of the legs at the bottom? I’m thinking I might have to use 8’ 4x4s depending on how wide the 10’ are.

      No. That is the nicest thing of using these brackets--the swing set does not need to be anchored to the ground, which saves you a ton of work, but also lets you move the set around in the yard if you need to.

    This is the perfect video. When I seen those big a** kids run out I said ahhh haaaaa I knew this was the one. 😂😂😂I can't wait for the hardware store to open so we can build my big baby a swing set. She's 10 and she said mommy I'll swing until I'm old, idc what anyone thinks. I was thinking about replacing a swing for one of those silky things for me to flip on. So it would be a mommy and me swing set.

    @Room2Zoom what is the weight capacity for the swing set frame?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  Год назад +1

      The beam strength is the main deciding factor on the weight limit of this A-frame. It is therefore hard to answer what the weight limit might be because the size of the beam, the length of the beam, and the type of wood all are big variables that have a lot to do with the weight limit. One of the beauties of the brackets I use for this A-frame structure is that they will work with beams of any width (but that are 5 1/2 inches high). That means you can upgrade to a 6x6 beam or make a beam out of three (or even four!) 2x6 boards if you would like to have a little more piece of mind on the strength of the beam.

    Should this swing be secured to ground? If so, what is best way to do this?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  11 месяцев назад

      No, the brackets that this swing set is made with have a 60 degree angle between the legs (most other brackets have about 45 degrees between the legs), and are strong enough (almost 1/8" thick steel) to work with this angle between the legs. With this wider stance the legs do not want to lift up when the kids are swinging high. So you can avoid that whole hassle of securing to the ground--digging holes, mixing and placing cement, or trying to work in metal ground anchors that never work. And this means you also are free to move the set around from time to time to give your lawn a rest--by the way, nothing comes close to lawn for the comfort of the kids. Check out room2zoom.com for great tips and how-to's.

      In the video I use 10 foot 4x4 legs, which gives me the height for the set that I like the best--8' 9" to top of 4x6 swing beam. You can use shorter or somewhat longer if you'd like. If you use legs longer than 10 feet I suggest you add a horizontal piece across the legs, forming the typical "A" frame structure, for added stability and strength.

    What happens if I use 2x4 stacked?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  2 года назад

      If you mean 2x4 stacked one on top of the other to create a beam for the structure, you're on to something. But what you would do is screw together three 2x6 boards--deck screws are the easiest--to make the beam. The resulting beam will be 4 1/2 inches wide and 5 1/2 inches tall. This is a really nice feature of these brackets that you can make a beam like this and it will work perfectly. In fact the beam will be a bit stronger than a regular 4x6 solid beam. And nowadays it can be hard to find a 4x6 beam, and this lets you get one for cheaper, usually out of nicer looking wood, and as a bonus the laminated beam won't crack or twist like a 4x6 can sometimes. With these brackets you can use any beam that is 5 1/2 inches tall. It can be any width you want, but just 5 1/2 inches tall. Good luck!

    Did you have to angle the bottom of the legs?

    • @room2zoom236
      @room2zoom236  4 года назад +1

      No, I prefer to NOT cut the bottom of the legs at an angle which cut would make them flush to the ground. Without making any cut, the "point" of the legs will stay in place better in the ground, for added stability. They will sink in an inch or so, so they will appear to be flush to the ground. And one of the beauties of this swing set design is how easy and quick it is to build, with NO cutting or sawing needed! It's a great-looking, fun, well-designed set, with no cutting needed. You just pick up 1-12 foot 4x6, and 4-10 foot 4x4's from the store, and away you go!
