wow, what a find this was. Michael was such a kind person it's small wonder he was patient with a student who was nervous and obviously hadn't done interviewing much. He seemed to treat everyone like this, what a sweet guy, I miss him terribly.
thank you for posting - what He contributed too original composition on the guitar/a stringed instrument will always be appreciated and loved ~ so sad He left us when He was at such an early age
This local tv interview was done just before ~ "An Evening of Symphonic Celebration and Mr. Michael Hedges" presented by Enid(Oklahoma)-Phillips Symphony, a 1989 performance at Philips University in Enid.
Michael was traveling the U.S. when I saw him live at Grant Street Dance Hall in Lafayette, LA. His unique style was quite a memorable experience. While watching him perform, I sent a note to him saying that I was originally from Enid, OK. He played a song for me. We lost him too soon..... Heaven gained .... :-(
Thank you for all of these videos. I’ve been a fan of Michael since seeing him in concert at the Kentucky Theater as part of their Troubadour tour in the ‘90s, so I’ve checked the Internet from time to time for his videos and you have so many videos I’ve never seen anywhere else. Much appreciated! The interviewer could have been better (haha), but you couldn’t ask for a better subject than Michael.
The interviewer seemed pretty bored and disinterested throughout the thing, but Hedges' detailed explanations made it a treat to watch. Thanks for sharing, really interesting stuff.
I have had radio interviews like that! UGH! He did a very skilled job of giving her enough information to use. It always angered me when this stuff happens! People! DO YOUR JOB AND HAVE YOUR RESEARCH DONE BEFORE YOU DO THE DAMNED INTERVIEW!!! Oh, almost forgot, thanks for posting this. Amazing find!
How funny to remember a time where the term "new age " was so new that people still didn't know what it was. The interviewer is just inexperienced, stop harshing on her. How great to hear him, brilliant. How we miss him, such a shining light Rest in peace Michael.
there's something wrong with this interviewer.... Chenoweth and Green, I think, is where i purchased my acoustic guitar many years ago. It is my understanding, that before he was tragicly killed, it was in the discussion stage for our orchestra to do a concert with him. The music we will never hear...:(
Wow, type3secretion, where did you find / get / procure this video? Thanks for sharing. He is so calm, peaceful, humble, loving and down-to-earth. This was really fun to watch. Thanks again!
I heard him at the Oregon county fair, he was playing gimme shelter, and after that all along the watchtower. The atmosphere was magic. I was looking for the other players, before i realized he was the only one playing.
it's pretty hilarious how little of a crap this interviewer gives LOL!!!! So I hear you're a pretty good guitar player, is that where you studied with the ... guy you're playing with tonight?? what's his name??? NICE
That was hilarious! "So what is new age music? Is that something you invented?" She was so clueless and he was so gracious. He gave great answers to her mostly silly questions. Thanks for posting.
It's a shame the interviewer was given a promo tape of Watching My Life Go By instead of Aerial Boundaries. It was interesting to hear that Michael didn't naturally write in the new age style and may have been making a conscious decision to adhere to the Winham Hill mould.
THIS IS SO EMABARASING TO WATCH lol. if he was alive today, he probbably would mention this interview in some talkshow as a funny and cringe momment of his life. wtf

He was always so chill. I saw him live 3 times including the year before he passed and he always brought his wit in the same case as his guitar.

Thank you for this interview of Michael.
Michael, such depth, talent and eloquence, despite interviewer ineptitude.
Miss him
I was fortunate to see him in NYC at the Bottom Line in 1996, amazing guitarist!
I was there too! 1996. I remember it well.
The interviewer seemed pretty bored and disinterested throughout the thing, but Hedges' detailed explanations made it a treat to watch. Thanks for sharing, really interesting stuff.
@alexguitarmusic
It was recorded in 1989, right before Taproot was released
Oh, yeah, it was great to hear that he considered Joni Mitchell a huge influence on his songwriting, I hadn't heard that before.
and Neil Young + CA sound
Think Joni's Open Tunings...

Thanks for this!
Michael Hedges, "~Open Air Records and that's what my vocal record came out as,
which is the one i gave you to listen to".☺
I’m so happy my friend Misty and I got one chance to see him.
Saw him in Royal Oak Mich. with other Windham Hill artists.
Fantastic musician

it is great he takes into account the average person has to be able to relate to him " directly "

All my Type 3s had secretions, Slick.
So I hear you're a guitar player?
Great interviewer
Actually yes... she prompts him and then listens to him speak.
Thank God Michael is such a thoughtful person. This interview could have been a train wreck.

well he did popularize acoustic percussion
he said he wanted to make a music video, i wonder if he ever did.
@Tinydude10 Also, remember in the 80s? It was "cool" to be all monotoned lol
See these days gotta be careful because most people won't be able to have the time to show you what's out there

Yes I so much agree.

1989

" i hear you're a pretty good guitar player " ?
sub par interviewer is embarrassing herself
good hearted michael lets it ride
Too bad the interviewer didn't grasp what Hedges was all about. I'd say she prepared at the minimum level.
Shame this interviewer is clueless. How'd she get this job? She has no clue who she is interviewing and the unbelievable talent in front of her. Wow!
My guess is that she was a college kid at Phillips University in the journalism school.
Honey- do your homework first . 🤦🏻♀️
