This was filmed in my back yard here in Windham County the day after we recorded the piece in my studio here. I was, and still am, stunned by the piece. We knew we were watching history being made.
I remember getting a free casette of Windham Hall in the 80's along with this and Snow on high ground i was hooked.. it must have been great.. so sad that Michael Hedges is not with us anymore..
Not complaining, but this is a "finger-sync" right? He's playing along to the studio track. Still, beautiful... I love the live one from Oklahoma City "with road crew praises"
@@wanderer5581 indeed sad how he was lost. I stumbled upon it when a friend accidentally dropped the AB cd out of a box in my trunk as I was helping him move... around '91-92. I have all his CDs and still listen to all of it sporadically all the time.
Excellent. I had the great privilege of spending time with Michael a few weeks prior to his passing. I received him at the airport in Houston on his Oracle tour in October 1997. We spent time in his hotel room talking (& smokin' out) and he made me this fantastic apple/ginger juice (he traveled with a juicer). Around that time the G3 tour was coming through Houston featuring Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson & Adrian Legg as the acoustic opener. Michael told me he was offered the opening slot of that tour, but he turned it down because they would not let him headline. We also discussed Pat Martino’s album ‘All Sides Now’ which Michael was featured on. Michael told me he’d had Joe Satriani (also on that CD) and Pat Martino at his home studio for some recording sessions prior to the release of that album. In December 1997, I remember sitting in my office and the secretary walking up to my desk and handing me a fax from Michael’s agency SRO Artists. I was deeply saddened when I read the fax announcing Micheal’s passing. I immediately left work, went home, and played guitar to honor Michael and drown out my sorrow. I was incredibly moved by Michael during our brief meeting. I’m grateful for his presence then and now
When I was a child, I used to listen to this song on repeat from the big wooden speakers in our log cabin. When I finally got a Walkman I’d play it over and over again as I walked through the woods and streams nearby. I saw him perform when I was 12 in Murfreesboro, TN shortly before his death. We were in the front row. My little 12 year old self sat in awe and wonder, crying and unable to stop. If I ever need to be reminded of who I really am beyond the physical and external world….of who my soul is….I listen to this song. It describes me perfectly without a single word ever having to be sung. RIP Michael. I hope I get to meet you in another life.
Nothing N nobody can beat this masterpiece. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Greatest ever to play the acuostic g 🎯. We'll always be the next That's what I think, if you can relate you're wid me. If you can't that's really a problem.
I saw Michael in concert 4 times. Every time, I was completely and utterly blown away. Not a thing he plays is a studio trick, I watched the guy play this song 5 feet from me. Unreal...like being in another reality.
People like Andy McKee and all the Candyrat guys are adored and looked upon with awe (and rightfully so, because they are amazing players) but this is the man who started it all. The greatest acoustic guitarist to ever draw breath, IMO.
+Neil M once the commenter compared Michael Hedges to OTHER GUITARISTS, it became a valid conversation. Preston Reed was doing percussive guitar stuff around the same time as Michael Hedges.. They ARE in the same conversation.. You incredible idiot.
And his artistry has never been surpassed. I've heard all his acolytes, and those working in similar styles without stemming directly from Hedges' work, and none - NONE - have the compositional mojo going on like he did. Michael Hedges created transcendent tone poems - by and large the contemporary players that do the altered-tuning, two handed think are just playing repetitive songs.
Michael laid the foundation but there are better. I was like you saying no one can touch him but Luca Strancignoli( spelling??) Is beyond Michael I'm sorry to day. I'm sure Michael was a strong influence but Luca is more of a visionary let alone a prodigy!!!
Still bringing balance to my heart and soul. This song courses through me and reminds me that I’m more than just skin, muscles and organs. It’s the connective link to the Universe. This song will never grow old for me, it’ll only grow with me as I grow older.
Some people play music, others are music in human form. I often end up being reminded of this piece and find this video and rewatch it - every time I feel a bit calmer and more grounded.
This has got me through some extremely difficult times. He may be gone, but he has achieved more than he will ever know. An outstanding human being. Love to his family. 😘
A man to play like this must be out of this Earth. A man to create something like this must be a genius. A man to play AND create this must by Michael Hedges. Man, what a masterpiece! RIP.
I saw Michael at a community college show in late 1996 in support of his Oracle album. I had a center 4th row seat. I was simply blown away. Once in a generation or so comes along someone who takes an instrument to a totally new level (think Bela Fleck and the banjo). Michael Hedges did that for the guitar. Pure artistry and musicianship. We all deeply miss you Michael.
Thanks to remind this, 'cause he is the one who open de the way for guitarists such as Jon Gromm, Andy Mc Kee, Ben Lapp and many others. And yes, he can be put on the same shelf than guitarists like Wes Montgomery or Django Reinhardt.
Dave Johnson I’m ~4 years into my personal acoustic journey and I only recently discovered Michael. Such a shame he passed on so young... I have a heck of a lot to learn and I am just blown away by his tone and volume control and his overall impeccable command of the sounds he allows the instrument to release. Truly a musical talent in a league of his own. Rest In Peace Michael
I also heard they are finally making a film about Michael--his life and music. I can't wait! I hope it will provide insights to his creative process! He truly was a musical genius!
Unreal, what can you say about genius? I remember buying this album when it was first released in 1984. It was a game changer for acoustic guitar. Still sounds incredible 35 years later. Goose bumps!
I've listened to his CD for years and it never gets old, am always listening nonstop on my drive up to the Mt Shasta retreat ❤️️ most innovative guitarist ever ❤️️ briliant composer and performer ❤️️
What blew me away about Micheal and his playing was several things. One is the fact that he used several different tunings, not just 1 or 2 like a lot of players, but several. And the way he fingerpicked- he could play a bass part, a harmony part, and a lead part, and play it like it was nothing. He had a inpeckable sense of timing. Sure there are a lot of good guitarists out there from chicken pickin maniacs, to speed metal shreaders, and jazz greats. But there was nobody who could play an guitar like Micheal and make so much wonderful music come from it. He is surely missed.
rbagel55 I saw Hedges play live 3 times, and each time he blew my mind. When he played his harp guitar, he sounded like 3 or 4 guitarists playing simultaneously the way his hands flowed effortlessly from one neck to the other. How anyone can keep all those thousands of note/chord combinations in their head at the same time is totally amazing, especially considering that he used different tunings for each song he composed
My aunt as i was told, was best friends with him in college, she was the one that had to break it to his girlfriend when he died in his wreck, his work hopefully will be remembered forever.
I was looking for Chris Hedges and mistakenly used Michael Hedges in the You Tube search engine. I am a sucker for guitarists so I took a listen - what a talent! So sad he is not with us - and guess what CDs I'll be purchasing in the immediate future. Incredible artist.

I'm so glad he was born and so sad he was taken so soon. I imagine him old and gray and able to see and hear all of the children who are now grown that he taught and inspired all around the planet. Rest in peace Michael.

My parents introduced me to his music when I was a kid. This song will probably be his legacy similar to Ode to Joy being Beethoven’s. Or I should say most well known. The unique beauty behind this song & all the unusual motions he does on the guitar to create the music is pure genius!! What other guitarist plays on the neck of a guitar more than they do toward the bridge? This guy was amazing!! Rip & thank you for the beautiful music 🎶
I heard him play many times in Baltimore in the 1970’s. He was with a group called the Lotus band and then later he did a lot of solo at a bar called “the Horse You Came In On“. Got to know him a little bit and passed the hat around for him for tips. He was extraordinary.
There should be 100 million visits to this video! We miss you Michael! May you, your spirit and your unprecedented music, talent live forever and ever and ever in the home of the Eternal God!
I miss him and never even met him or was able see him perform live. Only one Michael Hedges in my book! And no one even comes close to comparing. We love you Mike! May God Almighty with the angels bless you and your talent in the realms of peaceful glory forever, through all eternity in the wonders of ETERNAL HEAVEN!
What i love about Michael Hedges over other 'New Age Acoustic' players is that he never does something just to be fancy, everything is done in the way it's done because that way it sounds better. What an excellent song
I first encountered this being at a concert at UNCA's Lipinski auditorium in Asheville NC on October 24th 1990. I come back to this video because the autumn leaves remind me of that day. Everytime I watch the Lord of the Rings I think of Michael when Frodo wakes up in Rivendell, also on October 24th. God bless you Michael!!!
My favorite of all of Michael's work and in my opinion one of the brightest guitar stars ever, I've learned so much from his study. We were so lucky to have him and were blessed by his incredible spirit and creativity. Long Live Michael Hedges.
I wish Michael was still with us, I wish the times he were alive were still with us before all this madness that as beset the earth. I wish I could "thumbs up" this performance 1000 times, nothing sweeter on a good set of headphones. Thanks Michael wherever you are now. Peace be with you bruh.
I first heard this song on 89.7FM WKSU (Kent State University, Ohio) 14-15 years ago and to this day no other guitarist has moved me more with one song than Michael with Aerial Boundaries. A few years back WKSU played this on 9/11 as tribute during a special broadcast. "nuff said...
What an artist Upon hearing of his death my heart and soul just bottomed out.I first heard him in the middle East while I was under a lot of pressure and then I heard this song and my spirit was calmed.Thank you Michael Hedges.RIP.I know you are safe. You are sorely missed🎉🎉🎉
This is my favourite of his takes of this wonderful tune. So transcendent. It suits outside. Total respect. RIP Hedges. We are poorer for the loss of you. EdShift.
Holy Moly I didn't know anyone made a music video for this song and so far back too. THANK YOU for sharing this. Michael is the great one when it comes to the acoustic guitar. Pathfinder.
+Jeffrey Collins There is another studio video recording of this and Michael is really in his element with his playing. ruclips.net/video/IZimv-KYr8M/видео.html
It is he album version. I could tell right away. But someone challenged me...I played them at the same time on top of each other, one from here and the album version through media player. They are 100% identical and not off by even a millisecond. I got to see Michael five times and met him once. He was the greatest who lived.
Quite fitting that you uploaded this on his Birthday. I've always considered this song the Mount Everest of solo acoustic guitar. I'll learn it some day. Some day, soon.
This song is a Classic. There's something very American yet Universal about it. Perhaps it's just me. When I hear it, I think of American landscapes immediately - forests, mountains, beaches, rivers cutting through landscapes, etc.
A Genius, nothing less..... Possibly the people that dont like this are not educated in a minimal level of music to be able to appreciate such amazing piece of art.
In Spring I noticed a renewed vigor in my step. In Summer I had to slow and take a few naps, but still felt good. Fall cooled me, made me more alive and vigourous. Winter can't beat me, made me want to warm myself with fire until Spring. In Spring I noticed....Oh yeah it happening again. Michael Hedges made that routine stop for me. Made each part of life worth waiting for the next. Its been so long since he died, and I still hate it. I wish he was here, as much as my family. No GOD can be so brutal? I guess thats why I am Agnostic. I Miss you Michael, loved what you had to say, and play!
Seems that a multitude of banjos and Robots live small lives eating pizza in mom's basement(home). Maybe if they had actual RESPONSIBILITY, and a life, they may not be so hypocritical? Just a thought. Anyhoo, "it" won't stop, stupidity is rampant and no signs it will stop any time soon. Let them rant, let them show what they really are....Fools!
In 1995, Michael came to University of Nevada, Reno for a solo show. It wasn't just the guitar music that transcended the audience. It was his FLUTE solo ( combined with dry ice effects ) that STUNNED everyone that night. Michael was more than a musician. It was like he was sent here to transport all of us to higher planes, in terms of musical landscapes. I don't think of him as a new age performer nor as a acoustic player. He was BEYOND human and musically teleportational. I never saw Miles, or Coltrane or even Hendrix. But I saw Hedges. And I still see his influence everywhere I go. THAT is a master musician, Michael Hedges.
He was a remarkable person. Two he was an astounded musician .I saw about 1983 when Ariel Boundaries came out.I had gotten word he was a force to be reckoned with and he did not disappoint that night I saw him do that album and more. His playing spawned a new appearance of guitarist. I really don't know that if anybody knew he had a degree in music. He could play Bach..and his technique of playing guitar, right hand was in classical position. He had a strong sense of what he wanted to do with his music.Sadly he left all to soon. RIP 🙏 MICHAEL HEDGES.

Another master, lost in the echoes of time...Hendrix, Shawn Lane, Hedges...yet his soul will live forever...you can hear it right there!
Here here, Shawn Lane has few equals

"ground breaking approach to playing"---incredible, the best new age guitar player of all time!!!
A genius at work. RIP.
What set Hedges apart from all those who have tried to imitate him is that he was a great composer.
So you really think Mike Dawes isn't a great composer?

every tunning is different for every song he writes, so said he.

Amazing guitarist. He passed away in late 1997, yet his music lives-on.
Oh. So that's what a guitar is for.
rest of the world still trying to figure it out
Best comment ever
My aunt as i was told, was best friends with him in college, she was the one that had to break it to his girlfriend when he died in his wreck, his work hopefully will be remembered forever.
Yes he is AWESOME!!!!!! I saw him yrs ago in Memphis and that time has always been with me ! I hope to see him again in heaven
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
I was looking for Chris Hedges and mistakenly used Michael Hedges in the You Tube search engine. I am a sucker for guitarists so I took a listen - what a talent! So sad he is not with us - and guess what CDs I'll be purchasing in the immediate future. Incredible artist.
nice mistake, you'll never be the same.
A Lifelong Journey ,Thanks Michael Hedges!
In elementary school we had his sister as our PE teacher who I believe still works there. I remember the whole school put on a performance to honor him
How is possible to play like this?!
It's like full orchestra are in his beautiful hands.
RESPECT!!!
You are still alive.
I'm so glad he was born and so sad he was taken so soon. I imagine him old and gray and able to see and hear all of the children who are now grown that he taught and inspired all around the planet. Rest in peace Michael.

Everytime i hear this song, my soul is pushed over the clouds for a few moments, and then it softly come back to reality.
Gypsied and mesmerized, always to my time with you at Berklee, tears flowing on the indoor---outdoored stairs.
Grande Siempre!!! RIP!!

My Good Friend I still miss you every day
After all these years
God rest your SOUL
You can see his soul as he plays. Dreaming awake. Thank you Michael for sharing who you were with this world!
Still awesome after all these years!!
The guitar player from another planet.
3-1-23: Still here and love his poetry. RIP

The greatest acoustic piece ever written!
This just makes me speechless it is so brilliant.
There should be 100 million visits to this video! We miss you Michael! May you, your spirit and your unprecedented music, talent live forever and ever and ever in the home of the Eternal God!

Simply amazing the presence he creates with his talent. It's like being transported to another dimension!
His playing is so atmospheric, ethereal. He's got a magic aura to him.

I was lucky enough to see Michael in Scottsdale. AZ in ~Winter 1988. Front row - center seats in a small venue. Mind = Blown.. and still is !
the way he builds to that climax and the climax of the song....... it keeps on making me cry... such an amazing vibe he gives me
My mother introduced me to Aerial Boundaries when I was in my rebellious metal years. I still love this song.

I saw him play live many years ago in a small restaurant in Florida. I sat spellbound for an hour. A true guitar explorer.

Genius!! Losing Michael was a tragedy!
One of my all time, best-ever favorites.
Unreal talent, sheer creativity....and a reminder that life is way shorter than we think.
Absolute, pure magic.
There will never be another Michael.
a magnificent piece of music....thankyou michael...it calms my heart..
This is my favourite of his takes of this wonderful tune.
So transcendent. It suits outside.
Total respect.
RIP Hedges.

This what I want to hear when I die.
peachmelba1000 If you can't wait, that could be arranged for a small fee???
It’s what I want to be played when I’m passing too. This is my “soul song”.
I learn something every time I watch this - he's doing SO much in every split second. Amazing musician, just amazing.
It's been a long time since we lost Michael, and i still tear up watching this one, what a talent ...
Personally, I'm a classical music man myself, but, wow, what a masterful piece of music this is. Hedges is a superb artist.
This *IS* "classical" music - no different than anything Segovia Dowland, or Bach wrote in terms of complexity and depth of emotion.☮️
I have the whole collection of Michael's CDs... He's my all time favorite acoustic guitarist, and he's a true artist. RIP.

It is he album version. I could tell right away. But someone challenged me...I played them at the same time on top of each other, one from here and the album version through media player. They are 100% identical and not off by even a millisecond. I got to see Michael five times and met him once. He was the greatest who lived.
Reminds me of the movie, "August Rush." This is beautiful! What a gifted artist!
Blew my mind 100 percent. Every. Single. Moment.
Rest in peace my brother. Amazing musician and human being.
Quite fitting that you uploaded this on his Birthday. I've always considered this song the Mount Everest of solo acoustic guitar. I'll learn it some day. Some day, soon.
I have no words for this other than, "I have no words for this."
I love his Music ...so way before his time ...such vision and talent.
One of those people you wished lived forever, but he does through his music, and what a legacy it is.
RIP Mr. Hedges, an absolute legend and gift to all music…one of my fav acoustic guitarists of all time.
Brings a tear to my eye every time I watch this. Not cuz of the beautiful music made, but the fact we won't hear it again.
This song is a Classic. There's something very American yet Universal about it. Perhaps it's just me. When I hear it, I think of American landscapes immediately - forests, mountains, beaches, rivers cutting through landscapes, etc.
I miss MH so much. He was the best musician I've ever seen live.
A Genius, nothing less..... Possibly the people that dont like this are not educated in a minimal level of music to be able to appreciate such amazing piece of art.
Well said, Zombieland. I've been listening to him, and this piece, for 30 years... Still can't get enough.
Such a Passionate Song. Micheal recorded this, Then two weeks later he passed away. R.I.P
Pure genius this man was! It would not be an exaggeration to say that he was - is - the best acoustic guitar player ever!
I Miss you Michael, loved what you had to say, and play!
that makes no sense, but go with it!
Let them rant, let them show what they really are....Fools!
who gives a fuck about your philosophy any way, I sure don't. 1.0 : 1.2720 : 1.6180
frank sigwart go fuck yiurself bitch
The best acoustic guitarist ever!! Also an amazing song.
Thank goodness for RUclips and BluesValerio for keeping his music alive so I can still find my Zen
Aerial Boundaries changed my life.
This is truely a work of art this man really has talent and has probaly the coolest tunings i've ever heard
