Making up a tremendous fireload! You forgot other nasty stuff, like Acetylene containers, spraycans, motor oil, and of course, cars (e.g. at 4:20). This is when a response to a fire may become really dangerous! Hats off to all firefighters!

Looking at the way the rire was reacting to the water, I suspect that both gas meters and pipework were involved. Some years ago, we had a similar situation where the fire was not going out. When engineers found the valve in the road to cut the gas to the entire building. From a raging inferno, everything just went out within seconds. Almost everything in the building had been saturated, so it was just one almighty gas fire.
I completely understand what he is doing but if that flashed, considering what was burning, he was done. I cannot stress, wear the SCBA equipment, it may save your life. Its just property, no one is in danger except for you doing your job, gotta come home safe fellas. Please be careful and thanks for what all first responders do.

I guess LA doesn't have as much high rise buildings and more importantly, most high rises there are relatively modern (compared to for example New York) with better fire escapes- and protection, so the demand for a tower ladder, with bucket isn't as high. But seeing certain neighbourhoods age I would think they should look in to some buckets. (They seriously don't have one?)

I was surprised that 30+ minutes into the vid (I think I heard 1 hour into the event) the power was still on to Sal's - you could see the lights and the TV's were still on... not sure it matters in defense mode with no FF's inside crawling around among the debris and wires, but it just struck me as odd... even a little eerie... great video...

They transitioned to defensive, but initially, they had guys on the roof attempting to do fire attack. Given the transition to defensive, if they're able to get a better control on the fire, they may switch back to offensive. When this happens, it would be useful if the door was open, permitting entry or exit, should a future fire attack need it.
Where’s the sector chief in the rear of the structure? The firefighters operating the hand line inside the rear exit need to step out and set up for defensive operations. Where is the collapse zone in the rear? Clearly they haven’t declared this a defensive operation so there is no collapse zone. Not wise.
In La they do what they call greater alarm so I don't think they do the first alarm second alarm thing they'll just call for a greater alarm assignment
So the on scene Chiefs will ask dispatch to start a more companies greater alarm assignment is anywhere from like 6 to 15 companies on scene they also have what they call a major emergency and that's about 16 to more on scene
There's got to be a better way of dealing with these fires so as not to risk these men. For one thing, the fire hose nozzle should be elongated- not round! There should be some rescue chopper that can spray water from the air.... Look at the radius of their air canisters. THE hoses should be almost that large .
I just don’t quite understand why they don’t have any tower ladders. They could’ve stopped that from spreading if they had a lot of overhead water being directed on the fire.
Honestly, I'm shocked as a German firefighter on how the American colleagues are working the amount hazardous situations that could've been eliminated by simple unified rules. Is crazy.
@@JustinKais The ladders as example are to shallow, we put our ladders in a 65°-75° angle so the ladder doesnt slip when u go up. There is a bunch of stuff we have Rules for to minimize the risk of injury to us and others. the so called Feuerwehr-Dienstvorschriften (Fire Service regulations)

Pull back, set up a collapse zone (which makes that area in the rear of Auto Zone uninhabitable). I have a hard time believing what I’m seeing at this fire. Is LAFD really this poorly trained? AutoZone employee stated that this was caused by battery charging accident.
