I underwent POEM Procedure today on 26th August 2024. Was suffering from Achalasia from a couple of years. Thank you for posting this, I'll try to follow as well. Juices, milkshake for 1 week, then soft rice stuff. Wish me luck 🤞🏻

Achalasia! Changed my life...I had POEM in 2021. You have a great attitude going into surgery day, I couldn't eat and lost 35 lbs leading up to the surgery date. How are you doing now? When I first had the surgery, the results were amazing for the first four months then symptoms slightly came back. I have to take PPIs 2xday now and grateful I can EAT...

Oh wow! I feel like I found my “community of peeps” (sadly) that I am in the same boat with Achalasia for over a year. I have my POEM scheduled for October 4th. This has been a hard 1.5 year unable to eat or swallow. End up throwing most of the time. Lost about 40lbs. Never hated the HealthCare system delays in US as much as I do now (and I work in Healthcare!). Enough of me venting. Just wanted to thanks for doing this video… as much as you were smiling and being positive… I could feel the pain and see myself smiling when I talk to my friends when I explain to them… so this is so real …. Thanks to all other commenters as well.. made me realize I have other people that are going through….and understand the pain and frustration. Some thing I felt my family and friends didn’t understand and didn’t want them to worry about me much.. anyway, now I am rambling. Thank you again!!! Hope you are feeling better now.. wish me luck!

I get what you mean! I have jackhammer esophagus and have lost 30#… the drugs help a little and the Botox wore off in 3 weeks. I am being sent to university of Miami on Monday to find out if someone can do a POEM and maybe fundoplication. It’s getting harder to eat and work… i vomit so much (except for today yea) and it makes me lose my voice. This is so scary and overwhelming. 😢 I sleep in a lazy boy every single night since Feb. I hope this new Dr can help me!

My achalasia symptoms got diagnosed in July 2023 but the symptoms started in February 2023. It’s insane how fast it progressed. I’ve had a botox injection in February 2024 and early April 2024. Both did not work. Yesterday (April 25) they finally scheduled me for POEM surgery. I was vomiting a lot when they brought me back to my room but that stopped after.
Today (April 26) I will finally get to eat something soft (soft diet for 2 weeks) and after, FINALLY start introducing the normal food!!! I am very excited for the two weeks to be over and feel like a normal person again 🥹 I mean, achalasia is forever but I hope this surgery finally allows me to eat better (the past days I have just been eating white chocolate bars lol at least 2-3 because nothing will go down). I probably tried already ALL the existing white chocolate bars in the supermarkets here in Germany 😆

Does anyone here have jackhammer esophagus? I have stage 3 and on like 5-6 meds… I vomit almost every day… unable to work since I can hardly eat 600 calories a day… Botox injections helped for only 3 weeks… next step is POEM and headed to Miami to see a new more specialized Dr on Monday. I am down 30 pounds and lost a ton of hair… the biopsy was + for alopecia. Anyone else losing their hair? I read one case study where a lady had advanced jackhammer and also + for alopecia. My primary dr thinks it’s autoimmune too. Ahh this is stressful and nobody to really turn to since it’s so rare. 😢

So glad I found this. I’m 61 and started having swallowing issues in my 20’s. Over the years I’ve had the esophagus dilation performed about 5 times but last year was told that was no longer an option for me and they finally diagnosed me as having Achalasia. They recommended the Heller as my next option but even the surgeon said that there was no urgency, thankfully. Unfortunately, I am now starting to aspirate at night so I’m considering getting either the HM or POEM scheduled soon.
I live in Tennessee and the closest options, in order of proximity, are Vanderbilt in Nashville, Washington University in St.Louis, MO, or Tulane in New Orleans….anyone have any feedback on these three. Thank you in advance.

I’m having this in 2 days. The liquid only diet is SO frustrating before surgery. I can’t eat food well, but at least I can chew!!
But it’s a good chance to eat better, and feel less pain long term.
I’ve been told liquid diet for a week, then purée for a while, then soft foods for a while. I’m shocked you were told to eat soft food like 4 days in!!

hey! i came across this cause i have a pouch in my throat lol (super rare and i dont think anyone in their 20's has gotten it ever) anyway as part of the removal they want to remove the pouch and then do the POEM thing that you got. im just wondering have you noticed more reflux in your throat after this procedure? like sore vocal chords or more burping or belching? im worried about getting the POEM because i get belches already that burn my vocal chords so im hesitant that they want to cut the muscle wahhh :(
