My family divvied up these books, my daughter and each of four of my sons, and I each reading one. We argued for our book to each other. We've done this each year for the past nine years. To be frank, we each appeared underwhelmed by this year's shortlisted books. Two were viewed as a tad less mediocre than the rest. These were This Other Eden, which probably won't win, and Prophet Song, which probably will. (Btw, for reference, three of us have books published.)

Loved this video. Just finished listening to How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read, and this video was the perfect compliment to that experience. Tried to do my own analysis after listening to you read the opening line and it was really fun. Definitely going to try this with the next book I start. A+ and look forward to the Booker Live Stream.

To add some context to the quote: Bertolt Brecht was a German author/poet/playwright who lived through both world wars. I don't think it was his main focus (I'd say he's primarily known for his impact on theatre), but he was definitely among the many German writers who contributed to war/ post-war/ exile literature, so he himself was "singing about the dark times"

I read 'If I Survive You" - the author's parents moved from Jamaica and he grew up in the U.S. The "What are you?" question reminded me of Pico Iyer's book "The Global Soul."
