So the casting director for this movie is actually John Papsidera who’s the casting director for Wednesday, Yellowstone, Oppenheimer, multiple other Nolan projects, The Suicide Squad, Ghostbusters Afterlife, and many many other amazing projects. This is the guy who’s responsible for giving us Heath Ledger’s Joker
The casting directors for these big blockbusters are never given nearly enough credit. MCU has been a great example of seeing star power in its actors (esp its early days). James & his director seem to have a real knack for it
The casting director is not singularly responsible for Ledger getting the role. Don’t spin that narrative and present it to make Gunn’s choice here more appealing or credible.
See this is what solidified that James knows what he’s doing. If there’s a word to describe Anthony it’s utility. If anybody can portray the extremes of Metamorpho in an honest and grounded way, it’s Anthony Carrigan. Plus dude deserves a big budget role like this, he just kicks so much ass
Anthony Carrigan actually did an interview with Deadline on his casting and had this to say: “I certainly think that at least in the source material, Metamorpho, when he was transformed into his superhero state, I think he was very reluctant to have it because he felt like he was a freak and he felt like he was no longer who he was. I can certainly kind of relate to that, in terms of my alopecia. So, that’s definitely something that I’ll be channeling and am excited to bring to the character itself.”
What excites me most is that if The Authority and The Terrifics already exist in universe, then Superman isnt going to be treated as the first superhero inspiring others to take up the cape. It's going to be Superman becomes a hero as response to a universe full of heroes and that would be a great way to look at what makes Clark special. Also, if The Terrrifics dont exist, we could see Lois and Clark exploring what happened to Rex Mason at Stagg Industries and the birth of Metamorpho.
I wonder if we're going to see something similar to invincible where a young Superman is trying to make his way into the super hero world, and joins some pre-existing teams to help that process. Maybe some of the overarching conflict comes from supes being on the teams but not fully agreeing with how it does things bc his moral standard is tiers above the rest
Hell inspire the existing heros/team to be better. I think thats how it will play out. Some more to the light and some will regect it. Civil war for heroes in a way.
You overthinking this… Noho Hank is perfect for the role! 1. He looks like him 2. He can play goofy and sinister at the same time. Something metamorpho has been a bunch in the JLA
Yeah it sounds like his only real issue with the casting is that Anthony isn’t a “Hunk” but like it would totally be a James Gunn thing to cast a conventionally good looking actor for before his transformation lol
@@trilliam8806 right! Or even have him imagine himself as a “hunk” before the transition but nobody has the heart to tell him that wasn’t the case lol that was kind of NoHo hank’s thing too. Carrigan’s Zsasz is what sells me on him as Metamorpho. He played Zsasz as a very confident, Devil-May-care character but also laid back with a weird energy. That seems perfect for Rex
Not to mention my guess would be he's going to show up as Metamorpho, I imagine they're skipping his origin, so the whole adventurer aspect might only be brought up in passing, so I don't think it's a necessity that he has those characteristics since a lot of that is more prevalent before his turn, who knows how he's changed since then. Like you said he could absolutely pull it off if he needs to, I just wonder if it'll actually need to be present.
If you read the original run from the 60s, Metamorpho is a very happy go lucky and doesn’t really mind that he doesn’t look human anymore. He goes to big galas and everyone thinks he’s a ‘hip cat’. I think Carrigan could embody this version of The Element Man especially as it would be too obvious to go down the sad Ben Grimm route
Its very interesting to see all these characters chosen so far. I feel like each will teach him some sort of lesson on what it means to BE a superhero. Metamorpho teaching him to be alright with coming out to the world as Superman (if thats the direction this'll go). Hawkgirl teaching him that though his planet is gone there are others out there in the universe, he's not so alone. Mr. Terrific teaching what Fair Play really means (& just the general gist of it all). And of course, Guy teaching him what kinda hero NOT to be.
Ever since he cast Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and it ended up being one of the greatest superhero movie characters ever, I've decided to just not question his choices when it comes to casting.
Especially because Gunn actually didn't like/see Pratt as Star-Lord (because he was a chubby comedy guy) despite his casting director pushing for it. He eventually let him audition and came around. I like that he's open to trusting his collaborators and shifting direction when he is wrong for the best result

we passing from Superman and Batman to (speaking about the general public) obscure characters, I can literally smell the love for dc on this movies and im here for it!!!!
I don't want Ben Schwartz or more of the Same Ol' to play Plastic-Man. DC should get more age appropriate actors & no names to get these roles. It's difficult to pretend that everyone is at least 10 yrs younger than they are & Samuel Jackson is the only actor tht the De-Aging CGI actually works perfectly on.
All these castings are just for side characters. They probably won’t have big roles if any. Superman and the main cast surrounding him are the ones who need substantial serious moments, not these guys
as somebody who is not very familiar with metamorpho at all, i’m just so excited to see carrigan act in something so big. his character work in barry is incredible. and i think he could properly act out the pain of being changed into something he doesn’t want to be. also if the character is typically similar to the thing, i kind of just don’t need that, especially with marvel having its own.
He stole the show in Barry for me, which was hard work to do considering how great the actors were in that show. I also think it's cool to see him in something so big.
this strikes me as Gunn operating in his comfort zone. Metamorpho is kinda Ben Grimm with all the Fantastic Four's powers. The reason you can cast Anthony is because they're not gonna go into his backstory.
I would have preferred saving Anthony Carrigan for a Deadman casting personally; idk if you say something similar, I just started the video, but I'm just gonna put that out there
Carrigan can play intimidating so well, I don’t think Plastic Man would be the best use of him either. i think it would be simpler on a technical level to have an actor who’s already sorta naturally bald and then use practical effects and makeup to make his metamorpho appearance more realistic.
3:24. I like how his only grip with “Barry”, is that it gets TOO Intense. That jus shows you how fucked up the show gets. And it’s AMAZING. I hope this Role for Anthony opens Up more opportunities for him man. He was FANTASTIC in Barry. He has SO much range maaan(NoHo Hank reference).
I know nothing about this character but honestly he's such a great actor. I'm actually a lot more excited to see this movie with him on board. I hope the movie is good but even if it isn't, there will at least be some good acting in it.
I don't know the character too well so the casting isn't that heavy for me, but hearing the actor say he relates to the character because he's felt like a freak with his own physical condition makes me favorable to the casting.
I feel like this is great casting. Metamorpho is both funny and (through his powers and appearance) a bit creepy. Carrigan does this to a T and he's athletic! I thought he was great in Gotham as Victor Zsaz as well. I'm only familiar with this character through the DC animated stuff but I'm a fan! they can always give him a wig and makeup for the before transformation too.
I think this can totally work (Google 'Anthony Carrigan with hair'), and there's a few options: 1. Make Metamorpho CGI like the She-Hulk version of Hulk (he needs to be 7" tall, ripped, and have the ghoul nose as a baseline because that's the coolest looking iteration). 2. Get Anthony Carrigan the same trainer who helped Chris Pratt get ripped for GotG and go with the silver/bronze age version of the character (which is still ok I guess) using CGI mostly for the textures on his body and his powers.
I wonder if we’ll even get more casting announcements until the strike is over. Guess it depends if the actors signed contracts before the strike and the news just hasn’t come out.
I feel like you're focusing on pre-powers Metamorpho too much. It seems to me that James Gunn is going for a universe that's kind of already in motion. I think we're going to be skipping a lot of origin stories... I don't think we're going to see Matamorpho without his powers.
The only real reference I have for metamorpho is from Batman, the brave and the bold, where he was characterized as a pretty fun loving, brute type with a heart of gold type, and I’d be excited to see some of what he brought to noho hank into a metamorpho performance. For me, I definitely see him as more fun and easy going than the thing, and I think trying to play or cast metamorpho like the thing isn’t the strongest play
What I like about this cast of characters is that because of the multiple origins, we can probably get the proper team line up, meta human, space guy, tech guy and magic guy.
Carrigan is one of the funniest and best parts of Gotham and is great in Barry, so looking forward to see his character. Speaking of Barry; Bill Hader for Ted Kord in a time travel buddy cop movie with Booster Gold.
As someone who isn’t a Snyder fanboy but would’ve liked to see the Snyderverse and his vision come to life I just want to see James Gunn full first chapter to come into fruition then I’ll judge it
I can see Clark dealing with already established super teams that just don’t see his vision of fighting crime. The Terrifics can be one of those teams, a stormwatch as well. But after Superman shows the world how it’s done, a lotta these guys become reserve Leaguers. P.S. a young Bruce Campbell is my ideal plastic man
As a person that only really knows about Metamorpho from Batman Brave and the Bold cartoon I think this casting is good and it's possible he plays Metamorpho and somebody else plays Rex Mason
I assume Metamorpho will be CGI or some mixture of CGI and prosthetics. We might hear about his origin, but I don't expect we'll see it. I think Anthony Carrigan has enough range to play this guy in his present state.
It seems a little too coincidental for Metamorpho and Mr Terrific to have their castings announced already for us to not get the terrifics, maybe they’ll even have their own project in the other of Gods and Monsters
I hope I wasn't the only one that took the Title literal and thought that *Barry* had a superheros comic. (Gonna be honest, I didn't know who Metamorpho was, I think I saw it before but I though that it was Absorbing Man)
Go to the first 3 books of Metamorpho. I had always wanted Bruce Willis to play him. Not Die Hard but David Addison (Moonlighting). Very comedic. Tons of dialog.
At this point, outside of the popular characters, I don't think most people worry about the comic book relation to the on-screen representation unless the movie is bad or the acting is. Star Lord was a serious soldier guy before the movie, and people still were worried about Pratt in the role.
(Via The Hollywood Reporter) Carrigan said that playing the character is meaningful as a member of the alopecia community. “This character from what I’ve learned of the source material, he didn’t like the way he looked, and I can really relate to that,” The actor added. “You know, when he got his powers he thought it was a curse. That’s something that I really felt as well. In my case, I turned it around and saw it as a blessing. So I’m excited to bring that to the table with this character.”
why no one is noticing that james gunn is creating the international justice league in live action. We have Gold Booster (the tv show, Blue Beetle, Metamorpho, Guy Green Lantern, they are all members of this league formation.
the whole theme of Barry is boxes, and not putting people in them, or breaking out of them! the same goes for acting and casting. You are putting Carrigan and Rex Mason in boxes, saying it wont work, but that's exactly how barry got made, diffusing those boxes and letting the ideas meld
Carrigan as Metamorpho is cool. I'm really only familiar with him as Mist from the Flash and Zsasz from Gotham, but I like him in both those roles, and I think him as Zsasz may lend well to the Rex Mason aspects of the character. I'm also curious if they're gonna do a Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno type thing with the character like Marvel did with Banner/Hulk back in the day, like maybe Carrigan is just Metamorpho and they get an entirely different actor to be the Rex Mason parts, that probably wouldn't work as well nowadays, but it's something to be considered.
I don't know the work of the actor you're talkin about for Metamorpho but you said he looks the part for the the monster version of the character since it's is Superman movie they might not show metamorpho origin at all.

I assume Metamorpho will be CGI or some mixture of CGI and prosthetics. We might hear about his origin, but I don't expect we'll see it. I think Anthony Carrigan has enough range to play this guy in his present state.
Hey, love your videos! You would benefit from a pop filter and rolling off some high end frequency to fix the sibilance.
The Terrifics Phantom Girl is an ancestor of the Legion of Super-Heroes Phantom Girl
This is absolutely excellent casting
This Phantom Girl is Linnya Wazzo, an ancestor of Tinya Wazzo, who is the Phantom Girl in the Legion of Super-Heroes.
It seems a little too coincidental for Metamorpho and Mr Terrific to have their castings announced already for us to not get the terrifics, maybe they’ll even have their own project in the other of Gods and Monsters
I think I was most excited about this choice. Looking forward to seeing the rest of them.
I hope I wasn't the only one that took the Title literal and thought that *Barry* had a superheros comic.
(Gonna be honest, I didn't know who Metamorpho was, I think I saw it before but I though that it was Absorbing Man)
Love the Sixers shoutout
Go to the first 3 books of Metamorpho. I had always wanted Bruce Willis to play him. Not Die Hard but David Addison (Moonlighting). Very comedic. Tons of dialog.
At this point, outside of the popular characters, I don't think most people worry about the comic book relation to the on-screen representation unless the movie is bad or the acting is.
Star Lord was a serious soldier guy before the movie, and people still were worried about Pratt in the role.
Bro jj from outerbanks would be a perfect plastic man
I finally realized who you remind me of and it’s a young Tim Roth specifically in reservoir dogs
Love the 76ers shoutout lol
did not expect you to be a sixers fan
He’s probably a villain to redeem
I think Anthony will make himself and Metamorpho like yin and yang ,meant to be , peas in pod.😏
We don't see his origin. We never see the "rugged handsome" man. Just the deformed hero
I love noho hank
They just won’t show his origin. He’s already established. So he’ll just be metamorpho and Anthony would be great casting
Anthony Carrigan might not look like the traditional 'handsome, adventure man" type but that still doesn't mean we can't get that
the whole theme of Barry is boxes, and not putting people in them, or breaking out of them! the same goes for acting and casting.
If James Gunn wants to do FF he can also adapt the Challengers of the Unknown
I think he mightve done some iffy stuff semi recently but I could see John mulaney as plastic man
