Vai is a chameleon. His primary focus is on the needs of the music, but is also able to play the part of the right kind of rock star for a given situation. His performance style and choice of musical contribution is different with Zappa, David Lee Roth, solo, G3, and now here. A perfect addition and I really, really hope this band puts together some new music, changing from an alternate King Crimson to a true ProjeKct. And he looks like he’s having fun too!
I was at this concert. I have always admired Steve. His technical skill is unquestionable. But I have never really gravitated to his music. Here he absolutely NAILED it. Surpassed all of my expectations. He did Fripp in his own way and it was mind blowing.
If you think about it, 2024 is the year for Vai and Satch. Vai with BEAT ( tackling Robert Fripp's style ) and Satch with Sammy Hagar/Michael Anthony ( tackling Edward Van Halen ). What a great year for guitar playing! Thanks for the drop!
@flederzombie1960, best pro video you will ever see; it's called find nearest show near you then beg, borrow, steal, sell whatever prized poasessions you may & get yourself a ticket. But ah yes the band would do well to have it professionally filmed and sell a DVD, as this is a tour for the ages & will probably never hapoen again
No one can out-Fripp Fripp, but Vai's rhythmic looseness and energy lift this to another level....Maybe the best version of Larks III ever? And in all these videos today, Danny Carey is like one-third of the double trio version of KC by himself: he has even more speed and power than Mastelotto but definitely moves towards the feel of Bruford and doesn't jackhammer the songs.
I was there that night, when the solo first started I couldn’t tell what it was then he got to the higher strings and I screamed to my friend next to me “OH ITS LARKS! LARKS!”
I hope Vai adjusts the tone of his guitar as tour goes on, the distortion sounds too light for Crimson. I would love to hear a much heavier, roaring sound.
@@univox_guitar nope..he has already stated in a interview how he has had to buckle and put his head down and concentrate intensely on what he is doing….get with the program.
If you look on setlist dot fm web site you will see the song lists for San Jose and Napa were identical. Only difference was in San Jose they didn't physically walk off stage before "Red" - but they did in Napa before returning.
No…they don’t..this version is dumbed down…incredible….but dumbed down….Vai seems not to be able to play Fripp leads….Adrian is playing most of Fripps parts….was able to see them live in the 80s for all 3 tours…I saw Discipline performed in a Church at Oberlin College in Ohio…Finney Chapel….we sat in pews…it was appropriate…..trust me…this is great…but not anywhere near the original band.
@@sbrave2 have to agree with you…I absolutely love Steve Vai and his guitar playing..but it is blues based…and that is not a good marriage at all when he starts soloing…like your pedophile uncle walked into the room at Christmas time….quite jarring and unnecessary…..I personally would have thought Steve Hackett would be able to fill that spot…once again…Vai is an incredible musician…..astounding player….but not for Crimson…..call this what you want…this is Crimson….he would have never passed the audition walking in off of the street.
Man I have this guilty pleasure imagining Virgil Donati playing in this band instead of Tool drummer. You can hear that kinda opioid laziness seeping in, and it's NOT a good place for it, no. Damn.
As a FOH engineer I find videos like this more than a little bit frustrating. On the one hand it’s great to hear that there was a show (I’m a big fan and saw King Crimson in 1984), but the audio quality is so terrible it neither supports the musicians nor does it remotely capture what I would hope is an excellent sounding concert. Most annoying, this is the bane of decent FOH engineers all over the world when their work is reduced to this, an audio document that will last literally their whole career. I say, take some photos and WRITE about your experience, or send these videos to your buddy at the local pub, not on a RUclips channel for all to see.
yes, feel the same, I know the dynamics are almost entirely absent and yet, sitting here on my couch on a rainy Melbourne morning, I'm also grateful that I can hear and see anything from this tour at all.
I'm so sorry, I can def understand you come from an area of expertise but the majority of people I doubt think this way, and it also comes off a bit pretentious. You're 100% right about it not doing justice. It still sounds great... But I was there yesterday and it's just. Not nearly as good
So on the one hand you agree with my assessment but on the other you are calling me pretentious by bringing this up? A bit of a confusing comment TBH. I get that this is the new reality, and I deal with it every show I mix. In some ways I’m judged as being a ‘good’ FOH engineer because I achieve both good mixes for the audience and my mixes seem to translate well onto iPhones. So I live this issue daily. But the majority of people post reels or stories, which last 24 hours or so. It’s part of the viral experience and builds hype and community around a tour. That makes sense to me. Where I have a bigger concern is when these are posted as RUclips channels. First of all the person posting it may be able to piggy back this video capture onto a bigger audience by capitalizing on an artist’s fame. The artist never asked for this, so who’s to say this low quality capture is approved by them as promotional material? Second of all, and this to me is the relevant bit; these RUclips captures last for years and years. For me this is VERY different than the reels and stories usage of content like this, which feels way more like a short term extension of the concert experience. Anyway, that’s my reality, and hopefully a perspective you can understand. Not trying to come off as pretentious that’s for sure.
@@seanrichards9569from the perspective of the audio engineer making an aural statement, I understand. As a fan who might not get to see this show, I'm glad this is posted to see what I'm missing and the actual fun these musicians are having playing together to what may be a one off tour.
Belew has been making me smile for 40 something years
He's done a million things, but I still like the first Bears album the best.
I've never been a big Vai fan, but it seems natural hearing him in this setting. Well done.

Was thinking something similar. How fortunate we are to see both on tour
Yeah! Not only recognition-wise, but it's fantastic hearing them OUTSIDE of their own writing!!! In a totally different context
Yeah!🤜🏼🤛🏼
i love how vai puts some real swagger into first parts
I hope there will be a professional video of one of the concerts.

this is just spectacular, can't wait to see this live
what fun they have... how long did they wait for it... Arian... man sooo happy for you to see you back with those genius! ❤️
We need them to come to Europe! This is so fvckin great 😮😮
This is a dreamteam! Fantastic music! ♨️🎯♨️
Greatly appreciate your putting this up!
Thank you so much for sharing these. I don’t see them until late October and these clips are whetting my appetite
I love watching vai and Adrian move. It shows how they both internalise the rhythmic elements differently. Fascinating.
Marvelous! Please, come to Europe!
Never thought I'd hear a live version of this one. Last song on "Three of a Perfect Pair" and then the band broke up for a period of years.
At this point they had the audience in an adoring trance.
Sheer pleasure listening to and watching these guys!
If you are even SLIGHTLY inclined to go see these guys, GO! You will NOT be disappointed!
Adrian trying to mess with Steve and Danny laughing at 2:14 is hilarious. Looks like they are having a ball.
They are so professional that they can play around. It's awesome! Playing so complex music and still being able to faff about is just next level :^)

Agree
Sure miss the stoic Mr. Fripp but Vai pulls it off
delightful to see a version of crimson where everyone's just enjoying themselves!
Adrian Belew's vibrato works very nicely for this.

Nice recovery by Belew at 1:39. Just patiently waits and slips back in when he can.
