I can not lie, I thought this video was mighty strange when he started talking about making this character motherly and giving them ample, realistic, proportions and anatomy. He would do all this and then mention that he didn't want it to seem pornographic which is understandable but I can't shake the feeling that he's making a 3D model for a client who feels perhaps a little too strongly about their character.
@@Barquevious_Jackson that's the whole point of the character the way I described it to Dikko. I personally also felt it would be better for a youtube video that the character in question would retain some of the features that did make her attractive but deliberately not make it look like it was made to be pornographic or cater to fetishes which is often what gets you lots of attention on Twitter unfortunately. Initially this character's clothes were canonically different but I randomly decided to add a different design of clothes as you see in the video, and it was this little design deviation me and @Velciferart liked so much it just kinda stuck with us in following artworks.
When you're a professional and an artist you have to learn how to describe things in a precise and concrete manner. You are free to not do work if it bothers you, however I would like to remind people's sexuality is a part of them as individuals, but it is not all there is to a person either. It partly influences not only what they find attractive, but their hobbies, beliefs, attitude etc. and ultimately, the characters that they want to see brought to life, just like any other part of their personality. So ultimately someone wanting a motherly character is just as "strange" as anyone else wanting a *insert adjective here* character. The person who imagined the character is just as complicated as you are, don't think you can label them. People like to put complex concepts they don't understand in tiny boxes instead of trying to understand. But an artist's job is to understand and use their skills to create, sometimes for those who lack said skills.
She's Lovely! 💙 Thank you so much for going through such efforts to make a video about it and best luck with your child! Edit: for those wondering, the character's name is Helia.
Regarding curves, you're completely right. As a curvy woman, even if I wear a body suit, the fabric doesn't follow every bump and dip along my skin. Basically the 'skin tight' aesthetic you see on super heroes etc. is a 2D drawing effect that doesn't actually make sense in a 3D world. You have to go out of your way to make clothing do that and it's not particularly comfortable because bodies move. A perfectly traced shape in one position might work but not in a different one. An easy example is the low rise jeans and all the butt cracks many of us were traumatically exposed to.
Velcifer here, love your own rendition of Helia I also agree on how you went with her she looks so cuddly and motherly since I kinda helped in her conception. Totally gonna subscribe to your channel.
It's been less than a year since I touched 3D for the very first time, but thanks to your tutorials I was able to get into 3D character creation as my job! @@aneyeforsecrets I am a freelance artist who's taking commissions on game- and animation- ready 3D characters, Dikko's tutorial series "Modeling for Animation" dragged me through creating my first character, and it was good enough for other people to start commissioning me!
It's humbling to see what professionals can create. I started my journey in 3D art just 2 weeks ago, and I've managed to sculpt some heads, do some compositing, and create some texture paintings. However, seeing him create that amazing character, ready for animation, really gave me motivation and hype to continue learning. Congrats on the kid, it's totally okay to take breaks for that. Being a good parent is a huge deal so definitely, it's alright! This tutorial was really nice to see. Also you did such a good job, and you worked so hard for this person and that's cool! Quick question: what is the poly count of your fully rendered characters on average? I'm struggling to figure out what's normal/good for animation
With all solidify and subdivision modifiers disabled, this particular model sits at around 18K faces (or 35k tris). I dont usually track these kinds of things because I dont usually make characters for games, but for many situations that would be pretty low poly. I usually keep enough geo to support deformation by a rig, then add the subdiv modifiers afterwards. keeps the rig running smoothly and I can disable the subdiv without breaking the deformations as well. In most cased you want to keep the subdivs turned off anyway until rendering
18K is about the same polycount of a main/secondary character in Half life. 20-30K is about the limit I believe for characters in VRChat (they could've upgraded it though) 40-50K is about the highest LOD of 2016 Doomslayer, and I'd say about the 60K is contemporary triple A character close up LOD. not sure what it would be in average 3D animation

I probably should clarify Dikko calling them hoof-feet or hooves was a minor misnomer. They actually are supposed to have two-toed feet on a digitigrade leg structure, meaning they stand on the balls of their feet and the heel is raised off the ground. I've just come to realize I haven't practiced drawing that structure properly and may've left that detail out when Dikko started working on it, but I though some creative liberty is cool I guess.
From New Zealand to Aussie, thank you good sir Your content is awesome! and your delivery is genuine and relatable. I hope to one day soon be making a living working from home as a 3d artist. How realistic that is I don’t know as I’m still just beginning to learn how to rig and animate, not to mention the growing threat of AI making us all redundant and dependent lol
now if may be honest, I've been building my artistic skills in the past 8 years, particularly in 3D modeling, and unless you are VERY skilled at 3D modeling with both artistic and technical know-how to maximize your workflow and produce reliably high quality 3D art, I generally find that getting a job in 3D art (especially as a junior artist), doesn't pay very well or is an unreliable source of income to make a living on. it's better to do it as a gig and focus on developing those skills first and subsequently a portfolio of high quality 3D renders of your work. I mean if you have the aforementioned skills, that typically implies you're a senior 3D artist with at least 5 or so years of hands on experience.
Dawg this video is actually insane. And it came at a time when I feel like I needed it most lol. Thank you so much for sharing your workflow!! Amazing job on the model too, man :)
Yet another showcase how Dikko used to be the King of Topology Content on RUclips and that hasn't changed one bit! Glad all your efforts are finally come to somewhat of a fruition! I somehow ended up on your very first 3 uploads by some search engine luck and haven't regretted Subscribing ever since! Even though, I may never be able to replicate this master for my Game Development endeavor, it still helps a ton to be the learner with you!
I've always seen people do some sculpting by having an image and making blocks that they stretch along it. I am really sometimes wanting to try out 3D modeling like that, but I never knew how and not any way to actually word it to point out to what I was wondering. But otherwise, I find 3D sculpting like that amazing!
I wish I had a better pc to actually do high res sculpts but yeah auto rig pro is the best time saver! I have been using it for about a year now! 10/10 def recommend that add-on if your looking to save time and have an excellent rigging program!
I know you said you weren't trying to get the blend shapes to look perfect but the loop of the bow on her back is outside the knot and it kinda stands out a little. Not meant to be a negative critique or an insult to your skills, in fact quite the opposite. I just can't unsee something like that. Otherwise amazing work and impressed you were able to do this in two days! Keep up the helpful content!
Yo congratulations on your offspring! Great to see you're doing good and still kickin! I subscribed when I saw your character pipeline videos which are still just top of the line. Haven't spent a day in Blender myself, I'm a Cinema 4D guy, but most of what you're saying is applicable with most 3D software. So thanks so much for all the lessons and hours of entertainment! All the best to you and your family! Also, this character is gorgeous both in 2D and 3D. It's super creative and very well realized in 3D, really captures her essence. Awesome job!
Thank you very much! I gotta say, if it werent for C4D's horrid rigging toolset I'd probably use it in conjunction with Blender! Alas I dont do enough mograph to justify the pricetag.
Man you're a legend amazing end result and the video was therapeutic And congratulations for you have became a father you'll be an amazing role model for them
I've just submitted a sculpt/retopo of my character for a class but could not finish the retopo in time. But seeing your process now, I realize I need to utilize the Subdivision modifier and Smooth Vertices tool much, much more. Gonna be revisiting my model later with the lessons you showed here, and I'll definitely check out the tutorials you mentioned too. Thank you for this info, and great work on the model, it looks really good!
Mind you, the subdiv is really only there if you want your mesh to look smooth (as in you dont care about poly counts). You can still make a super nice model without it :). But yeah, defs check out my other vids because i talk about all this stuff in detail! Thanks for watching :)
@@Dikko Yeah usually I model very low poly to save time while modeling and so they can be used in games and run on cheaper hardware. But with my recent model, because I sculpted out all the details with the muscles n stuff, I wanted to try to make a high detailed mesh that could be multi purpose like cinematics or games. For usage in gameplay, I can then easily lower the detail for LODs n stuff later. Your videos are great, been watching some more! Also congrats on the kid!!
been wanting to get into 3d modeling and rigging models for stuff whilst also doing alot of 2d art so seeing this showed me its 100% possible i just need to buckle down and learn the software
This is a really good way to waste alot of polygons. If you want an efficient real-time model, you should start with 2 polygons and keep breaking the edges, careful to avoid waste and provide joint relief for rigging. Also, 5 finger hands are not impossible.
2 days.... legit feel ashamed that it's taken me over 3 weeks to get as far as texturing my characters... Any way, awesome stuff Dikko! Hoping to get to your level sooner or latter.
don't worry about it. practice doesn't always make perfect but it help you find ways to get more efficient at it which in turn will speed up the creative process

Love this video, seeing the amount of thought and respect you had for the original artist as you sculpt is just awesome mate!!!
Thanks for the kind words - glad you enjoyed the video!
Congrats Dikko! That's great news!
Thanks mate!
Congratulations man!!
Thank you very much :)
Dawg this video is actually insane. And it came at a time when I feel like I needed it most lol. Thank you so much for sharing your workflow!! Amazing job on the model too, man :)
Thanks for watching! Im glad you got something out of it!
Cute-as-hell character and a really inspiring, informative video!
Cheers!
Congratulation on the birth of your Daughter 🥰
Thank you!
just found you and.....wow youre underrated
the model ended up looking SO PRETTY! great work dude
def earned a sub here >:3
Thanks for the kind words and the sub!
Thanks a bunch! I have full confidence that you will one day be able to teach your goals
Brilliant work! I'm glad you're back❤
Thanks! More to come soon I hope
I would love to see more of these. This video is amazing!
Ask and you shall recieve :)
there you are! looking good man!!
Thanks!
I've always seen people do some sculpting by having an image and making blocks that they stretch along it. I am really sometimes wanting to try out 3D modeling like that, but I never knew how and not any way to actually word it to point out to what I was wondering. But otherwise, I find 3D sculpting like that amazing!
In blender its super easy. You should check out blender studios introduction to blender! you'll be sculpting in no time!
@@Dikko I probably really should, hahah! Thank you for your response and hope everything goes well for you and more!
looking cool. having facial hair makes look mature
Teach your child the ways of the digital world - she will be too OP.
Thanks for the continued content and huge congrats on being a father!
Thank you!
I wish I had a better pc to actually do high res sculpts but yeah auto rig pro is the best time saver! I have been using it for about a year now! 10/10 def recommend that add-on if your looking to save time and have an excellent rigging program!
Congratulations!
Wow-wow-wow! This is sooooo cool. Amazing job, man. I wish I could do like this. Unbelieveable.
I have faith that you will be able to :)
Congratulations, welcome back.
Thanks for such great content
I do follow you a lot ✌️
Wonderful work! I’ve been wanting to try sculpting for a while and this made me feel more motivated.
Good luck with the sculpting :)
Good eye :). I completely missed that. But hey, not bad for a sleep deprived artist :P
Alas I dont do enough mograph to justify the pricetag.
the man that made a budget artist video is rocking macbook pro
And how do you think I was able to eventually afford getting said Mac book pro ;)
@@Dikko niceee haha
This is such a cool walkthrough!!! Also, congratulations!
Thank you very much :)
Man you're a legend amazing end result and the video was therapeutic
And congratulations for you have became a father you'll be an amazing role model for them
Thank you very much :)
Congrats Dikko!
Thank you!
Im new to the channel! Congrats on the baby and great vid!
This is a really good way to waste alot of polygons. If you want an efficient real-time model, you should start with 2 polygons and keep breaking the edges, careful to avoid waste and provide joint relief for rigging. Also, 5 finger hands are not impossible.
She became amazing in the end!
Thank you!
Glad I stumbled onto your account! Awesome video!
Thanks for watching!
never seen your vids but they popped up on my feed. think the algo may be working in your favor. good video subscribed
Thanks! Yeah lets pray to the YT gods that the algo grants me many likes and subs haha
2 days.... legit feel ashamed that it's taken me over 3 weeks to get as far as texturing my characters... Any way, awesome stuff Dikko! Hoping to get to your level sooner or latter.
don't worry about it. practice doesn't always make perfect but it help you find ways to get more efficient at it which in turn will speed up the creative process
Congrads!
