In 1987 I got into a dispute with my local library over a book they claimed I never returned, which I had put in the returns slot. If it was just the value of the book I'd have paid it and forgotten about it, but they wanted a $40 "service fee" on top of the replacement fee. I told them to go piddle up a rope. I recently moved back to the city and tried to get a library card. They said fine... as soon as I paid the fee I owed them from 1987.

This reminds me of a van I retreived for a local cable company at my old job. Went missing for 5 years, when it came time for inspection they went looking for it. Come to find out it was parked in an underground garage, 5 stories down. Jumped it, and drove it out. No one that worked there bothered to check on it. It hadn't received a single citation since it got there. No one touched it, the dust was undisturbed. How that happened in Los Angeles County still amazes me.

My uncle had a lawn mower returned after 12 years from a friend who went to jail for 2 years, and after being convicted prison for 10. Sometimes people have family or friends with a rural piece of property and when their life is unexpectedly derailed they just have their family clean out their place instead of everything going to a stranger or the dump. This thing was probably parked in a barn somewhere and maybe someone realized it couldn't be sold or easily disposed of so they sneakily brought it back to u-haul.

I found the trailer in My Dads stuff when he died. We were Salvation army workers and it was one of 200 we rented for Katrina relief..This one was shipped out in a storage container full of supplies and for some reason, it was sent back in the empty container.. The containers were ours and we always left the trailers in LA...I just opened a container up for the first time in 15 years settling my fathers estate..and there it was....I would have Never returned that trailer if I had known you were going to just scrap it. The only thing wrong with it was a chip at the bottom of the door, the bent fender and the lights quit working.

I just thought it was a little strange that I find a mention of a situation mirroring my own so accurately.

I heard this from someone who used to work at U Haul, when they take the trailers to get “scrapped” they usually take every old screw off snd put new ones on and if the actual box of the trailer is damaged they just replace the panel that is damaged and place new tired and leave everything the same, they especially save the actual steel “skeleton” of the trailer because of how strong it is theres no need to replace it, they make them hella beefy for that same reason, to re use them since they’re super durable. You dont really see a beefy steel “skeleton” like those on regular trailers unless theyre big trailers lol

What actually happened: it was returned 14 years ago after being rented for only one weekend. But the manager at that location harbored a grudge against the district manager, who started dating his ex. So to get back at him, he took the trailer the night it was returned, changed the license plate, and continually rented it out to uhaul customers, but altered the payment system to make it where customers paid him directly. The trailer was under U-Hauls nose the entire time, but because the license plate was changed, and it was always surrounded by similar looking trailers, no one ever noticed it. After 14 years had passed, that manager had become district manager himself, and his ex and the old district manager had broken up, and he was pretty psyched about that. So he decided that now was the time to make his move. He had a friend take it home as a mock rental, and drop it back off at night where no one would be around. The next day, he let this low-level employee check it out, and the last record he saw in the system, (at the control of our beloved then-manager) was a rental contract for the trailer from 14 years ago. He called his district manager, which is of course our guy, behind all of this, who acts completely surprised. He fabricated this story about it being gone for all that time, since even though it’s been on the buildings cameras so many times, it’s virtually indistinguishable from the others. He knew it would be a great story and called the local news, who picked up on the story, which covered his tracks further. In the end, he got to watch the old district manager break up with his old girl, took his job, made out with over 100k in customer money paid directly to him, and got away with it all. It was a completely smooth operation. This guy has become the Uhaul mastermind. When is what the movie about this whole incident is going to be called. Anyways, I just made all that up. But it would be a cool movie, though.

U-Haul has their trailers custom made to their design specs with durability in mind, as they tend to get the shi* beaten out of them. The galvanizing on the frames is thick, they are overbuilt for the load they are posted to carry. Many parts have "U-Haul" stamped into all kinds of various parts on them to help identify the trailer as one. The companies that make them are not permitted to make other versions for other companies.

Instead of throwing it away i thought it would be funny to return it to the store covered in algae all rusted. Figured a employee would get a good laugh out of it considdering how horrible it looked. I figured they would just throw it away. I just forgot about it, i was at the store yesterday and i was amazed to see the cart racked up with all the others. The exception is if the show is specifically set somewhere where a mid west accent would be weird.

I guarantee you one of the employees took the thing. The fact that it just so happened to reappear as they were looking for it means that someone working for the company knew that they might get in trouble if anyone traced the missing trailer back to them so they had it brought back before anyone could realize it and stripped any evidence of their involvement with the trailer off to cover their tracks. If the owners are absolute idiots then I'm sure they'll fall for that. Got to give him props for trying though

We rented a couple of Nintendo NES cartridges when we were living in California in the early 90s. That was some 4 or 5 days before we had to board our flight to return to Argentina. Now, 30 years later, I still have those same games with me (Tekmo Super Bowl and Bases Loaded 3).
Before you judge me, we played those games for a couple of days and then someone grabbed them and put them in a bag that went inside a suitcase and we found out we brought them back with us like a week after landing in Buenos Aires! 😂
Can somebody make the calculations of how much do we owe those guys after 30 years? Not that I'm going to flight to California to pay them, but out of curiosity.

It's probably just a traller that was stolen and forgotten about on a piece of property that was sold and the new owner of the property probably returned it because they didn't want it sitting on the newly purchased land. Also, they're glad to have it back , but they're scraping it? They could have fixed it up or sold it as is. Could make a great custom camper.
