This year I'm watching you grow lisianthus in hopes that I can try it myself next year. This is my first year for a cutting garden so I told myself not to get overwhelmed.
First time growing lisanthus so I am so excited you are going to do a Q and A! When do you start fertilizing and how much? TIA 🙂 Love watching everything you do! You are extremely inspiring ☺️
I learned about Cinnamon over a year ago watching Maria pour it in all of her succulent potting mix. When she explained that it promotes root growth and is a natural anti-fungal source- I was sold. Let me tell you my seedling starts all smell really great. Especially on the heat mat! If I don't have any plants to transplant from seed this year- it's probably because I ate them! LOL
I did this on Tuesday. Daycare was closed, so I was stuck at home with my son. My son was happy he got to watch cartoons and I helped lower my OCD by cleaning them. Lol. I also just mixed cinnamon into my vermiculite bag seemed like 1 less steps🤷♀️
I love to see the lisianthus progress! I started three varieties Dec 22nd, Roseanne Brown, Apricot, and Lavender. First time starting from seed but they’re looking on track with yours and it helps SO much to see that! Thank you!
Just started my first lisianthus with all of your great help!!! A tool used for jewelry REALLY came in handy. It's a double-ended jewel picker. The ends were sticky enough to pick the pelleted seed one or more at a time directly from the vial. Using the small end of the tool, not one dropped on its way to the cell and it was possible to put it right where I wanted it pretty quickly. The sticky tip was still working after planting 200 seeds. The product says the tip was just been rinsed and allowed to dry to restore stickiness. I hope this helps.
Thanks to you lovely lady, I was successful my first try at lisianthus last year! But I do not remember when to start using 1/2 strength liquid fertilizer. I am having very good germination again this year even using some seed left from last year. Couldn't germinate the brown last year but it's all coming up with those seeds. Yay! Love watching all of your videos and wait for the bloopers every time. Thank you! LOL
Sippy bowls are LIFE! 🤣🤘🤘🤘 Also, thank you for this. It’s helped me remember that algae are living - and that’s the reason we need to pay attention to it. Also it’s a good indicator of growing conditions. Thank you thank you!
I love your diligence and dedication to your plants But I really love the guitar plucking at the beginning in your Intro and at the end. I enjoy your editing......Blessings!
It is great to see the progress. Signs that spring is on its way. My neighbour and I are checking out wildlife ponds and frogs are waking up. Will be starting some wildflower seeds this weekend fingers crossed everything will line up for it :)
Yes! RUclips is a full time job as well so I still have too much on my plate BUT at least the focus is all on growing 🥰👍 it makes the load a bit lighter
This is my first year growing Lisianthus. I started them in 3/4” blocks. When should I bump them up and I would like more information on fertilizing. Love your videos and all the knowledge you share! You are an inspiration!
This is my first time growing lisianthus. Some of the leaves are starting to turn yellow. I fertilized only the ones that have true leaves. I used fish emulsion (half strength, once every 2 weeks). I have them under grow lights. Any idea why the leaves are starting to turn yellow? My other vegetable seedlings are doing fine. Love watching your videos, so helpful, thank you!
Hey! Loved seeing this update! My Lisianthus are not started yet because we just got a shipping notification finally from geoseeds, and obviously can't plant until they arrive, lol! But when they do, I am wondering about starting them in 3/4" soil blocks and then potting them up into plug trays, purely for the sake of limited space on my heat mat. Have you done that? Would you recommend it, or is it a bad idea since they are so slow to grow? Thanks!!
With Lisianthus ...is it a cut and come again plant or do you have to plant a large amount for cutting to use in bouquets? I am having trouble gauging the amount of all my flowers I need to grow, and succession plant. Starting from scratch cut flower farm and have small budget. So I’m fine with starting small working my way up. I’m trying figure out most bang for my buck and how much to plant to sell boutiques through fall. I’ve grown flowers & sold in past but not cut flower farm. So little different but I’m so excited & happy to learn new things! Thank you for your videos & sharing!!
Kudos helicopter Lissy mom! I am wondering if you have explored astrantia yet? I ordered my first seeds this year and thought about your woodland garden for these. Thank you for all you share from North Idaho zone 6a 💚 🌿
This is my first year starting lisianthus and I started them around the same time as you and yours are HUGE! Mine seem like they are staying the same tiny size... like literally the size of the "L" on my keyboard. They have their first set of true leaves buuttttt again, they are TINY! I know they are slow growing but after seeing how great yours look I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong?
I’m growing Lisianthus for the first time this year but just a regular backyard gardener, can you PLEASE show us how big they are when you transplant them outside? I have no idea!! In 6a so warmer than you but so freaked out about losing my Lizzie’s!!!
Are lisiantus a continual bloomer, where you can take cuttings and they will keep sending up flowers? I live in central Alberta so probably a good place for cold tolerant flowers. I am also hoping to plant ranunculus this spring. I can’t wait. I told hubby today that if I had to choose between growing dahlias or growing ranunculus I would pick ranunculus for sure!
One of the things I enjoy about you is the random rambling lol. Because I'm the same way. I'm always rambling some type of tunes. Intentionally out of tune lol. One of my brothers recently retired from OTR truck driving. He'd racked up close to 2 million miles over his career. (He actually kept a record. But I can't recall the exact final number). Anyway, he was constantly bored out of his mind lol. We'd talk for hours almost every day. Spent a huge portion of that singing what He'd call "a little diddy" lol. We were always mixing lyrics and songs. He would get to a 2nd verse and He'd chime in "2nd verse same as the 1st". And repeat the first. Or We'd just make it up as we went along. Kept him awake at the wheel. And helped ease the loneliness of driving cross country. I'm thinking you are somehow related! Roflmbo.
This is my first time growing lisanthus, and I fear I’m starting too late. I’m in zone 6a(Canadian zone) and just about a 4-5 hour drive west of you. And I just wanted to ask what kind of advice you can give to first time small garden farmers when it comes to growing seeds and planting bulbs.
9B here. I’m confused about when to plant Lisianthus here. I ordered plugs but I’m sure I messed up with the drop down menu and they arrived first week of February. Our nights are about 40 degrees, days are 60ish, but a few nights of freezing are ahead. I’m hardening them off, have potted them up (they arrived tiny) and I’ve started to leave some of them outside under frost cloth, but I’m so scared I’ll lose them. Have not found answers in Cool Flowers, and a reference to #of leaves at Johnny’s.
When do you start anemones? I started my anemones the same time as my nunks, soaking both for 3-4 hrs and sprouting in basement ~60F. The nunks are doing great however only 3 of 25 anemones are growing, the rest of the corms turned to gooey mush. Any thoughts? I also hope I can plant my nunks early March in my high tunnel here in NH zone 4B. Fingers crossed.
Have you planned on your bloom date for your Lisi’s? June or July ? and are you looking for a second flush? I live in 6b and started some 12/27 (not too successfully), and again 2/13 hoping to get a half way decent crop before fall? Any thoughts would be great! Thanks for your postings love ‘em !!!
Hi! If you start the seeds in seed starting mix, that means theres no nutrients in that mix right? So i need to put them up eventually? If so, when would be a good time? Thanks!
I tried lisianthus from seed last year and I said never again (spoiler, they died young). So of course I'm trying again this year. And this time I mean it, never again.
This is my first year starting lisianthus. I started about 20 cells and have about 50% germination, the rest germinated but are still super small. I have maybe 3 that look like yours. At what point do you call the super small ones a loss? Or do you keep them going to see if they will bulk up?
Hi! I've been waiting on a lizzy update from you so I could have some guidance/comparison. This is my first time growing lisianthus from seed. I started my lisianthus on January 12th, they started sprouting January 21st. I know I'm a couple weeks behind yours, but yours are huge, compared to mine! I feel like they haven't grown at all since they've germinated. I have seen a handful of mine start to sprout their first true leaves. My question is, should I wait until all/most of my seedlings have true leaves before I fertilize? Or can I start now that I have a few starting to sprout their true leaves?
I started mine on the 1/18 --- so probably around the same time.... mine too got their first true leaves & wondering when to fertilize... for some reason, I am remembering last year that they mentioned after the 2nd true leaf you fertilize... not sure if I remember correctly
Depends on your zone but you could still plant lizzy plugs (if they are available) and if you are zone 6 or lower, you could probably start ranunculus corms and get results.
I got very little germination …. So sad 😞. I’m sad the the tray is taking up precious space with like 5 seedlings And the other tray has like 2 seedlings. Ordered my seeds from Johnny’s 4 different kinds. I must have done something incorrectly. I’m a newbie. Had dahlias abs zinnias last year that were fairly easy . My daughter is getting married July 23rd in our back yard and she asked me to grow her flowers. Her colors are green and white. I hope this isn’t going to be a trend. Yikes. Love your channel and silliness !
Lizzies are incredibly difficult from seed, so don't feel bad! I would move the few you have into a small tray and start some more of something else. (Snaps, Orlaya, Bupleurem, scabiosa, Dusty Miller...)
It depends on your first frost date! They just take forever to bloom. Mine could come as soon as Mid September so in order to get blooms I need to start them super early, short season woes! You’ll probably get blooms just later in the season 👍

Feeling very validated by the phrase "babying my seedlings".
I planted lisianthus first time this year & put cinnamon on for algae. It works great! Very little at all!👍
I love to see the lisianthus progress! I started three varieties Dec 22nd, Roseanne Brown, Apricot, and Lavender. First time starting from seed but they’re looking on track with yours and it helps SO much to see that! Thank you!
Thanks for showing how you scrape off the algae!
This is my first time growing lisianthus so I’m referring to your videos a lot! So far my lisis are doing fine. Thanks!😄👏🏻

Your Lisi seedings look super healthy! Great job, Nicole! Super exciting, can't wait to see them go in the ground.
Haha the cleaning ear. You are great😂😂. Hoping to do lizies and ranunculus next year. Thanks for the great videos
Ranunculas look so healthy and vigorous. Things are looking good, Nicole.
Idk..but i love winter when i seeing nicole more often than growing seasons.😅😅😅
My Grandpa would use peroxide on the green crap growing in with his bonsai trees. Not alt but it took care of it pretty fast.

Exactly what I am dealing with thought I did something horribly wrong
Thank you so much
This is helpful because I was freaking out about algae on mine.
Exciting!! I bet it feels so great to be an actual full-time farmer now. That frees up a whole lot of space in your mind to do what you need to do! 💜

You have me wanting to pretty up my Lisianthus by doing this!! 😬👏🏻
Love your energy! I did not know that about cinnamon, that’s brilliant! When do you plan to pot up your dahlias?
Love this! I think we have the same sense of humor. 😂 Cheers!
If you add a fan to the grow room you may not have as much algae. I love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing!

How far apart are you going to plant the ranunculus? Also, how many lisi's are you planting?!?!

Yes I do!

Try sprinkling cinnamon over the planted trays to keep fungal, algal etc from growing. It works and smells great.
That's exactly what I did in this video! It does smell amazing :)

I would love some tips on getting them to germinate. Have them on a heat mat but this is my 2nd time and very few are germinating.
You might spray hydrogen peroxide on top of soil. It helps keep away fungis and knats
Have you fertilized your lizzies? Mine are about the same age and are so itty bitty yet so wondering if fertilizer would help.
I have not fertilized them yet 🌱

Hey Nicole, are you going to put extra tunnels in the hoop house to protect the plants during the nights ?

Lisianthus question: How many clusters / cuts are you getting per plant?
Question! When will you plant your lisianthus out, and in what? A low tunnel? A frost cover?
When do you start anemones? I started my anemones the same time as my nunks, soaking both for 3-4 hrs and sprouting in basement ~60F. Mine won't bloom until late July and August. I only get one stem from each plant.
Thanks!
Wondering if this technique would work on white fungus?
Greag job!
8:05 I literally laughed out loud 😂🤣
This is my first time growing Lisianthus. Do you bottom water after they germinate?
can we sprinkle the cinnamon and vermiculite right after you've seeded them?
Hi! If you start the seeds in seed starting mix, that means theres no nutrients in that mix right? So i need to put them up eventually? If so, when would be a good time? Thanks!
No, my germination mix is full of nutrients but I start to fertilize weekly after several weeks. Mine are not potted up at all.
I tried lisianthus from seed last year and I said never again (spoiler, they died young). So of course I'm trying again this year. And this time I mean it, never again.

Would you sprinkle vermiculite at the start when the lisianthus is sown?
I did, lightly.
Plz let me know .need to put inside the germination chamber
Do you place your Lisianthus on a heat mat to germinate? If so, at what temperature?

If I had to pick just one to plant, lisianthus or ranunculus, which would it be? I don't have a greenhouse. It's probably too late this year anyway!
Depends on your zone but you could still plant lizzy plugs (if they are available) and if you are zone 6 or lower, you could probably start ranunculus corms and get results.
As lizzy are so difficult to start and take so long- for sure do the ranunculus!!! Get them a jump start like Nicole does here.
i'd go for ranunculus as they're easy to grow. i am going to try my hand with the lisis this year.
My first time with lisi seeds. How Long did they take to germinate?
Between 1-3 weeks usually.
Do you use a root shield?
Yes, I have RootShield
Can we use h2o2 to remove algae?
Where did you get your Dara seeds
Looks like the vermiculite smother the seedlings. Looks like you cover the seedlings with it.
It's fine. They grow up through it. They're tough!
I am so sad when i am looking at all of your beautiful ranunculuses bc mine diead.
Where do you get the seeds? Thanks!
I ordered from Geo and Johnny's.
