Trace the history of the invention of plastic, and how the material ushered in what became known as the plastics century.
--
For centuries, billiard balls were made of ivory from elephant tusks. But when excessive hunting caused elephant populations to decline, they began to look for alternatives. John Wesley Hyatt took up the challenge. In five years, he invented a new material called celluloid, which would become known as the first plastic. Trace the history of the material that ushered in the “plastics century.”

Was anyone else dissapointed at not finding out what replaced ivory billiard balls?
original material, back in the 15th century when billard was invented, was wood. It was replaced by ivory in the 17th century. After trying celluloid at the end of the 19th century, billard balls were made of bakelite at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, they are made of either polyester or phenolic resin (which in fact is similar to bakelite, just made under more pressure). The later is a higher quality material than the first.
You guys can make even the most unassuming topics into worlds of interest and curiousity. Nice job👍

John Wesley Hyatt, the person who started it all.
not really he aquired the patent of Alexander Parkes who first made celluloid as material for objects but the invention of synthetic plastic was done by Baekeland ( who ted labels as some inventor) who not only created bakelite as the first plastic like material that could be molded and hardend in any shape but also came up with the word plastic as a material derived from the greek plastos or plastikos meaning shaped & molded, this started the plastic industry. very strange choice of storytelling by Ted

Why is Ted Ed releasing content regularly these days when my exams are gonna start?
In my childhood my grandmom used to get milk in glass bottle. Which used to be returned in exchange for some money.
We received directly from milkman in our vessel.
The cold drink bottles coke, pepsi was sold in glass bottles and we used to return glass bottles in return for some security deposit. Like 10% i think.
The bottle caps, there were so many offers on collecting and returning bottle caps by companies.
All that is gone now.
We still do that where I live
I really wish we start to see more eco friendly options for plastic products . I am doing my part and avoiding plastic uses ... it’s all in our control, all human play their part and be responsible 🙏🏽love you planet earth❤️ 🌍😘
And now we should make the best, environment friendly alternatives and make it available in the whole world, to everyone's reach. ❤
PROBLEM: Plastic waste and pollution
CAUSE: Over-consumption
SOLUTION: Buy less things that you don't need and enjoy what you already have
Too easy. Or, too hard?
I think putting the responsibility on the consumers instead of the government or the corporations would be an ineffective move
@@curlyfries1377 if consumers decided unanimously to not buy the next incrementally updated smartphone, for example, you don't think that this will create change in the tech industry? Yes, a bunch of people may lose their jobs and income if consumption and spending is reduced, but why does human progress need to be at the expense of the natural environment and only benefit a handful of people who are sitting on the helm of corporations?

Plastic: if I say a ball will you be equally impressed?
30,000 tons of intellectual property was removed from Germany during WWII. For about 15$ you could buy a patent and start an industry. That’s why you will never hear the inventor’s name in your history books. I suspect it was Kurt Ueberreiter (probably an alias) and a few other scientists. The world may never know. My grandfather was a scientist in Berlin. He was a good man. He told my mother he never killed anyone. He told them he invented the first flexible plastics. He disappeared after the war. His kids were told he died in a Russian prison camp. In an interview Kurt U explains that it was a dangerous time to have children. I still wonder if he was the same man as my grandfather. The family stories of war are sad. Both sides have not gotten away with anything. Destroy the world for money and all future generations suffer. It’s not just plastic this was also the story of our pharmaceutical and medical industry. It’s why it’s a broken system.$$$$$

The one piece that change history for ever
Hi, great video! However, I would like to point out that plastic packaging were not always design to be for single-use, take for example the plastic bag (conventional plastic grocery bag) was originally created to replace the paper bags in an attempt to decrease the environmental impact. These thin plastic bags consume less energy and resources, are resistant and durable and therefore, according to the patent in 1965, were never meant to be manufactured for single-use.
Reference: Thulin, S. G.: Bag with handle of weldable plastic material. United States Patent Office (1965).
since it's very cheap, people don't care of reusing it

Technically yes plastics are made for single use. However with a little imagination, you can find ways to reuse your plastic items. It won’t stop the plastic problem but it can slow it down and buy us some more time to solve it.
I’m an avid gardener. I save my yogurt cups and egg cartons for gardening. I heard I can turn my plastic grocery bags into “yarn” for crocheting. Haven’t done it yet but have the bags saved up for it.
My husband said his family used to save the margarine tubs and yogurt cups to use as bowls and cups.

Please spread awareness about plastic waste and its deep-rooted origins! Reduce, recycle, reuse. The Earth needs all the help it can get :
Finding ways to reduce our plastic usage is going to be the most important way to reduce the negative impacts of plastics in the environment. A few general facts about plastics and recycling can be used as evidence for this:
1) Less than 10 percent of all plastic in the U.S. is recycled, with many plastics being co-polymers making them difficult to reuse
2) Less than 5% of all plastics created are biodegradable with an even smaller percentage being biobased/biodegradable, meaning most plastics comes from refining petroleum and are slow to degrade. Extracting, refining and molding these plastics comes at a high energy cost, beyond the negative environmental effects.
3) Microbes with the ability to breakdown plastics such as polyethylene are only able to do so do a certain percentile of the entire plastic. Microbes tend to struggle when the remaining plastic become more crystalline, which detracts enzymes ability to oxidize, hydrolyze and ultimately breakdown polymers.
Unfortunately the blame for the plastic problem has been shifted onto the individual instead of the producers who have overwhelmingly adopted plastics into a variety of markets. Yes , plastics are extremely useful in many ways, but without a clear "end of life" strategy and some regulatory measures to limit overproduction of single-use items, this plastic problem is going to become an environmental catastrophe.

@@user-nw6mp1wu2z I think he is referring to the milk in the yogurt. Cow's fart methane, which is a bigger greenhouse gas than CO2. Combine that with all the people who eat meat and drink milk, yogurt etc. But actually? Dont stop it, but become aware of how animals live in these conditions. Try to eat less meat in general, try to use milk alternatives like soy milk. Reduce the demand for animal products, so the industry needs to adapt. (The industry is not bad, its the people, they scream about the conditions in which animals are kept, but they would never pay more for meat. The industry only fills demands).
@Floris I know of this too but this wasn't in my mind at the point of writing. Your point is valid yes. I am just against that type of vegan who wants all people who eat meat dead. Yes, its good to be vegan, but most people want to eat meat. So it's not good to condemn them (that never helps to solve a problem) but to show them a way how they can help without stopping eating meat. Many who are becoming more aware of that will stop eating meat anyway or at least reduce the amount significantly. (You can still condemn the people who order like 1kg of meat and then don't eat the other half, but this isn't exclusive to meat, we should always treat food with respect and dignity, other people don't have the luck to do that).
Thank you so much!!!
