- This video covers details on how to effectively select/cut out parts of an image in Photoshop without using the pen tool. It shows how you can select detailed portions of an image (such as hair) without losing detail and without taking 4 hours to do it. This video is meant to plant a seed that will allow you to be creative and try the tools out for yourself and experiment with them. Practice makes perfect!
While some people are a little bit more mean-spirited about the point it did take you 2 min. 43 seconds to explain crude selection. I think it's fantastic that you're trying to help other people understand Photoshop, remember we came to you for help so don't let jerks especially ones on the Internet dictate anything.
Thank you so much for this video. It has been very helpful. But can you explain how to extract the hoofs back in the photo. Sorry, I'm a beginner. Also I am surprised at all the negative comments that people put on these free tutorials. Folks, you are getting this info for free. Be thankful. If you don't like it or you think you can do better, then just move on to another video. Thank you, Mike Schultz. I will continue to learn from your tutorials.
Nobody's gnna mention how *sophisticated* this video is
Ha, you the one that wasted 7 minutes. I don't see you putting out any helpful tutorials.
This is exactly what i needed for work I am doing. Thanks Mike.
totally worth skipping the talk and worth watching the rest, this did the job for me.
next step, mastering with color range contrast.
I wasn't just looking for a tutorial to crop hair, but to amputate my picture horse as well. So thank you very much.
Thanks for posting this free advice - helped me a lot. And I don't think you talked too much, its your free advice and you can talk all you like. cheers
Good explanation. I didn't mind all the extra banter as it gave my mind time to absorb wtf was going on with the tool and process. Thank you.
Thank you, I did learn from your video, I use Elements, which does have the same tools that your using here. Extraction is very time consuming and you taught me another way of doing it. On another note, I am so sorry for all the posters here that decided to be so nasty instead of realizing that you did this video to help us.
He's taking his time out to help people! You can always move on yourself!
Thank you! It was the best video, but you left us hanging with what to do with the output, etc.
Let them talk and say whatever, atleast he is tutoring ur asses for free, and too nice of him to take time and show us. What's going on these days with all the trash low level people around RUclips (To most of the grabage complaining about the talks)
Well said 👍
+Molla Dolla #word
Thanks for putting that out there; couldn't agree more.
omg I totally agree - low level people with low level thinking - just fast forward and be grateful you have something for free or go somewhere else
Haters gonna hate.
Thank you. I found the tutorial to be interesting and helpful. I especially appreciate the audio. Your diction is excellent and easily understood.
I don't think you spoke too much. Very informative... thank you! Cool feature.
One of the most useful videos I've seen so far on the subject of "fine selections"....it would have been even more amazing if you completed the selection and showed the bit about the hooves of the horse...but hey....the most important part, that of the fine hair, worked amazingly....thanks a ton....!!!
The commentary sounds sincere to me. Thanks to this tutorial
oh my gosh! this is amazing! i have been going through a lot of pain erasing things piece by piece, detail by detail. Now I know a super easy way to do it without all the effort! THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU ARE AWESOME!
You did help me with one aspect of Refine Edge and I appreciate that. However, I think you should continue with the detailing of the hair in your next video, showing how Refine Edge and bring out all the hair details. You need the rest of that horse's tail to look finished.
Tnx. A nice add on to the different options to extraxt hair.
Thanks for helping. You helped me complete my channel art. Thank you!
I was just gonna whine about the abundance of unnecessary information but when I scrolled down I saw the comments about whining dudes =D. Great job, perfect tutorial, too informative, thanks!
OMG! i've finally learnt how to "extract" hair without using the pen tool and 4 hrs. thanks alot mate
Thanks, as a graphic designer you know this could save you a lot of time... Good video!
THANK-YOU!!!! This was so much easier for me to understand than the Adobe ones I had been trying to learn from!!
This sounds like a very promising tool that I have no made use of. If it is as useful as you made it out to be, it's going to make Photoshopping a lot easier for me. Thank you
This is the best video I have seen for this . Thank you so much for the time and effort you spent to share this . You should upload more videos.
Awesome!!! This video tutorial has been extremely helpful for me!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do it and upload it for everyone.
pretty informative...layer mask is also good to use in conjuction with this and then go to refine mask and draw around object for fine hairs and stuff....I just need to learn how to make it less glowy looking...
It's a shame that while people don't have time to watch the parts of your video that might help out those that do not know as much, these people DO have time to get on here and complain about it. And while I'm also confident that the tutorial videos these trolls make themselves are shining examples of verbal perfection which allow them the moral latitude to criticize your "uh's", I know that if I were making a video for public consumption I would be a stuttering mess. Thanks Mike for the vid!
There's some problem with me... i can tell "that" on the green background too... so why not using "decontaminate color" option? I guess manual radius would produce a bit better result in this case.
This was a complete nice and easy tutorial, thank you.
Wow this video was fabulous! Thank you for taking time to do this for us all. I need to do this on my friends harley. Maybe this will work for all the fine detail? Thanks so much!
Don't mind the haters, very well done, especially for noobs like me. Would love to see how you get the white area of the legs back into the final selection.
Great tutorial very helpful thankyou. Personally the talking helped me understand the techniques he was showing me!
Quit talking so much. When you speak focus on describing what you're doing. You skip through a lot at the end where you should be explaining more in-depth the steps and forget all of the meaningless stuff at the beginning. Very informative and great quality!
this tutorial is useful to us beginners. well explained. thank you!
For the people who can't find refine edge, go to the 'select' tab--> click on select and mask with the shift button holded!
I think this video is mainly made for REAL beginners, who don't know ANYTHING, so this talking would help them a lot. I use this tool very often but instead of deleting the background I use layer mask. If the selecting goes wrong, it's much easier with layer mask.
God, I'm glad I found your video that helped me
Thanks man. I was struggling to find such a solution for a similar kind of photo I want to use. thanks again.
You know, this is humanity, someone try to help meanwhile unhappy and bad-loved people try to criticise everything.
Thanks for the tip on the tool I wasn't aware of.
i found this really useful. THANKYOU!!! and for the record, as beginner in photoshop I appreciate the commentary
Now why can't more people rise to the challenge like that. I admire your willingness. Look forward to the video and will subscribe if you do it. Cheers.
I have watched a few videos and mine never turns out this good :/
Thank you this video has helped me the most
In soft One, there is relatively little although I will say soft One has so fantastic features and I tNice tutorialnk it is going places (Rated No 2
Love your stuff! Big help!
Instead of duplicating your layer at the beginning, inverting your selection, and then deleting everything, you can create your selection (without duplicating the original layer), refine in, then hit command+J, and it will copy and paste what you selected onto a new layer.
There's also a masking option at the bottom of the refine selection dialog box that will automatically create a duplicated layer with a mask of your selection.
Good tutorial, thanks you for your time.
finally a clear tutorial which worked thank you!
Thank you dude. it works
5:36 before clicking you should check "Decontaminate Colors" thats a great option there and indeed, it will get you rid of all the noise and the colors at the background.. as he said.. you will again have to play with the settings at ^:30 .. no need.. just check that and play with amount till it suits your image and is of your taste... Great Tut!
Just what I needed. Thanks a lot Mike!
excellent tut mate
i love your teaching video more power to you buddy...
i recommended the background eraser tool,
it's much better cleaning tool and when u using it don't forget the selecting "Sampling: Backround swatch" use your foreground colour as a colour u want to keep, and use your background colour as u want to clean. This will give you a much more details then masking the hole image. It needs much more time then this refine edge but the result will be perfect...
great tut thank you!
thanks bro for the help! really simple and clean!
This was a very helpful video, thank you

very good and very helpfull thank you
Thanks a great deal for the quick and free tip
I like that you talked us through it. Im new so I want to know whats going on. Thanks.
I think using channels coupled with refine edge is much more effective. Also I never delete a background (unless in final stage). Its much safer to set the selection to a mask.
Love this! Thank you.
ignore everyone saying you talk too much, i find talking to myself while doing creative stuff makes the work better xD ranting videos are good, oh helpful tutorial too (y)
Very Helpful! thanks!
Good video on How to Quickly Select Images - Cut Out Detailed Images in Photoshop by Mike Schultz.
Great tutorial !! Can you please type how to separate the background from the horse ( when the horse allready is selected )? I understood ' command-hift-I ' Is that right or false. In case it was false, can you give me the shortkey of it ? Thanks a lot in advance :)
Hey Mike: Suggest you use either a larger cursor, or those red highlight tools to demo your actions. Would make it easier to follow along...Completing the drawing would also be nice. Thanks for taking the time to reach out, and help those new to Photoshop...BR
great vid man you just cut my photo editing time in half thank you
Who got this video recommended after 9 years
This was a very helpful video, thanks man keep sharing the awesome tips!
very nice technique
Great video tutorial! Thanks!
THANKS!!! THIS WILL BE REALLY USEFUL!!!
ty, just what i needed!
Excellent man! Thank you so much. Now I can finally do some advanced cutting in PS :)
AWESOME STUFF TY
Once you had the refined selection, you could have just used the magic selection tool to get the bottom part of the legs and hooves back.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Great video --very helpful
You did cover a lot of the basic steps in cropping out the horse, but one major thing you should consider is using masks, they make it so that your crop is no going to cause permanent deletion, and can easily be adjusted without needing the back up. :)
Thank you for this tutorial.
thanx this is a big help!!
Really really useful, thank you for taking the time to upload this, I found it very helpful.
Dude this worked for me :D Thank you so much! This helps a newbie Photoshopper a lot XD
Remember that time in history when RUclips users collectively forgot that videos weren't live so instead of just skipping ahead they complained in the comments section? Rough times, those days were..
I don't think you said "Right off the bat" enough times ;)
Thnx for sharing... all the same.
I'm looking for tutorial like this from a long time... lol
PERFECT!!!!!
Excellent tutorial but I wish you could have finished refining the image, and then adding a different background I think the tutorial needed a couple of more minutes, but is its great though, thanks.
Great stuff! Liked it a lot
Yes Thank You.
You should have made a complete video. Bring the hooves back, perhaps using the layer mask and then actually putting it over another background. But decent work. Crop out your initial blabbering.
I'm new to photoshop, i wish you would have shown how to get the legs back with the first layer
Good tute, thanks, but what about the hoofs? They are missing now.
Thank you so much!!!!!!
How does he make it so clear when zoomed in, I have a mac an it is so blurry when I zoom in. HEKP
