I got a 7 year 100k mile Ford Protect Platinum plan with key services for my 2022 Ranger for just under $1300 (before Ford raised the prices last October). For comparison, this would be almost $4000 at the dealer. Super easy, they have a web form that takes in your VIN and shows you your options and pricing, and will even take payment over the website

I hot-shotted travel trailers out of Elkhart, IN for four years. I started with a 2001 Ram 2500 2wd with the standard output 5.9 and 5-speed manual trans, with GearVendors overdrive. I drove for Indiana Transport, who had about 2000 owner-operators on contract. Around the yards, my recollection was about half the truck were Rams, with GM and Ford making up the rest.
I didn't make enough money to make payments on a $75000 truck and trucker's insurance. My little old truck was at least paid for, and worth about $4000 when I started hot-shotting it at 293000 miles.

If I relied on my truck to make money, I'm not sure I'd want LED headlamps unless the LED modules can be replaced quickly and the parts are ubiquitous. It's not like with a personal vehicle where you can keep driving while you wait for parts to come in if it goes out. The DOT will fine you and put you out of commission for something like that. Halogens can be found at almost all truck stops.

Think around your house, even. I've had to replace many LED bulbs. Even full light fixtures well before their claimed 20,000 hours of life. That's just an example, but I've seen LED headlights that had a side out. (usually GM, strangely) It happens.
Xenon might be a better alternative due to availability of parts, and they can melt snow too. They're almost as pricy as LED though.
Any way you slice it, there's many good reasons not to want LED in a working truck like this. Last, but not least... Cost is orders of magnitudes less.

You're right in that they're rated for longer lives, but when a light can put you out of service, it's not what some drivers want to pay extra for to have their trucks equipped with. Out of 10 you will see 1 or 2 GM trucks, 3 or 4 RAM and the rest Ford. Many times you see a fairly even split between RAM and Ford. The GMs are vastly outnumbered in what you see in average use. The point about familiarity at truck stops, etc. with the RAM inline 6 turbo diesel is a good one. We are venturing out from TN this year to make a trip to Montana and that is one thing I think about with my 2015 Cummins is the likelihood of finding some knowledgeable help if it's ever needed. Maybe it's because I drive a RAM with a G56, but why in the world can't you leave the gear selector alone. Once I started to notice, I couldn't unsee it. Is this why people hate the drive selector knob instead of the column drive selector? Got to use it has a hand rest? 😂

I’ll say this as someone who’s driven thousands of miles over the road in trucks similar to this. They need to make these trucks with much more comfortable seating and much better sound deadening. Those are the two things that will wear a driver out the fastest while driving. Just look at the seats in long haul semi trucks as an example. Dodge and Ram have lost all my respect since eliminating their V-8 lineup. 75k for a low option truck is a ripoff and over 100k for the limited is just stupid. It just shows what this country has become. Just look at what you can buy in other countries and their prices without all the hidden fees and destination charges.

    • @gungadinn

There are negatives using a class tractor in place of a heavy duty pickup truck.
Insurance on a class 8 truck is more, no 4-WD, wear items like tires cost twice as much. Oil changes were 4X as much. Towing in traffic or tight locations becomes difficult.
I owned a 99 International Eagle, with the big sleeper. My brother drove the truck for a few years before getting his own truck.
Having said that, the stability of a class 8 truck is much better. Stopping power is greater, except in the rain. Fuel economy was in the mid 8 mpg's loaded, unloaded was upper 8's. Everything else, class 8 dealership parts and service departments svck.

@@gungadinn Unloaded truck and trailer would be 12-13, that's a huge savings alone, let alone when not towing a trailer. Plus theoretically a dually could be your only vehicle and used daily.

      @@hitempguy
My mileage numbers were for a class 8 truck not a 3500-5500 series truck.
There is a huge negative on using a smaller truck. Most Hot Shots don't have their own authority. The company you're leased onto take a good percentage of the load.
Brokers know that Hot Shot's operate smaller equipment and refuse to pay the same rate that a larger truck demands. (when you can find work)
If you have your own authority, you're apt to stick around for a day or two waiting for a load, since you're paying the fuel bill. Even getting 13 mpg, a 500 mile trip and the empty return is going to cost you close to $200 in fuel.

The fact that transporters are having to use pick up trucks and cheap hotels instead of buying big rigs with a bunk, designed to actually carry much weight says it all. People converting pick up cabs to sleepers to avoid DOT registration, safety rules, professional driver licences and proper training to drive a big machine in busy traffic is terrifying. It's like going back to the 40s... When truckers actually slept on wooden boards behind the driver seat as a bed. People shouldn't do that to themselves. Get a CDL, buy a big rig and make customers and shippers pay the price truckers deserve people. Don't use a farmer truck for long haul. Much more money and safety to gain when using actually big rigs for long haul transport.
