    This is a tough song to react to, I think you did good nonetheless. The truth is you actually need to understand French to catch the beauty in those verses, because musically it's minimalist at best. Think of it like a Bob Dylan song, the core subject of the song would survive a translation but not the poetry.
    Brel was a popular poet from Belgium, someone the masses could relate to, and with Piaf, Brassens and Aznavour, perhaps one of the most consequential francophone singer to ever live. I think you were very wise to react to 80s or even 90s French singers, they were heavily influenced by American culture and the poetry slowly died in those years. However, reacting to Brel or even Gainsbourg will require a good command of the French language and for Gainsbourg a decent grasp of French/British/American literature (Bowels, Poe etc.).
    To give you a good example of the issue at hand at one point in this song Brel says "le rouge et le noir ne s'épousent-ils pas?" which is (horribly) translated "Don't black and red blend together", the translator decided to switch the colours, instead of red and black he/she writes black and red and this tiny mistake ruins the verse. The Red and the Black is a novel by Stendhal that all French schoolboys and girls study, a tragic love story that fits the song perfectly but that reference is lost in translation.

    • @jean-francoisribauville9065
      @jean-francoisribauville9065 3 года назад +1

      Stendhal has nothing to do with this.
      You have to take de verse entirely:
      "Et quand vient le soir
      Pour qu'un ciel flamboie
      Le rouge et le noir
      Ne s'épousent-ils pas ?"
      Red and black are the colors of the sky in the evening, just before the night. They marry together like a man and a woman.

    • @valerieh84
      @valerieh84 3 года назад +3

      Hello my friend, as a translator, I feel compelled to stand up for my colleagues here. Switching the colours red and black in the English version is not a mistake, it simply sounds a lot better. Every worthy translation of this text which I have seen will do it. You see, our job is not only to convey meaning but also the aesthetics of the text in the best way our target language will allow. We wouldn’t want to give the impression that Jacques Brel writes poorly! So we make certain choices and here, we choose style over certain cultural references that will most likely be lost on the audience. If needs be, we can add translators notes to our work, which may or may not be published depending on the support. But I am pretty sure that they are not lost on the translators 😉
      PS: love how RUclips turned Pauwels into ‘bowels’, I think he would love it!

    • @warrenpeece9624
      @warrenpeece9624 3 года назад +5

      @@jean-francoisribauville9065 While I agree about your view on the meaning, "Le rouge et le noir" obviously pertain to Stendhal's masterpiece, for a precise writer like Brel it is intentional. It is a reference and a possible double entendre.

He's still a major inspiration for many current singers, for his lyrics and above all for the strengh of his performances. Many singers regulary try to cover his songs (during concerts for instance) but very few manage to match the emotion he gave off ;)

    Jacques Brel, the legend. Thank you for that reaction, Dereck. Now that you have discovered him you have to see him on stage. It's another level. The song that I would like to recommend to you is "La chanson de Jacky". If you watch live version, you will see how he was a monster on stage. He was really singing each time as if it was his last performance. So impressive. So, if you react again to him, choose a live performance, please. Thank you.

    If you havn't already, please, please watch Dusty Springfield's version, in english from the 1960's. See just why the Pet Shop Boys had to do their thing decades later with this UK legend.

    Hi there, Jacques was the god of poetry, there are so much songs of him you should listen at. I would suggest you "Ces gens la" (those people) a song talking of a man complaining about each and everyone of a family who refuse him to marry the daughter Frida. You could also listen to "Le plat pays" (the flat country) this is a poetic sound talking about Belgium it express his love for his little country.

    Impossible to chose one song by that top singer, his songs were poems and theatre. I would really love for you to react to "Mathilde", I really love this song, the lyrics and interpretation are so interesting!!!

    This song is a real masterpiece! The lyrics are so beautiful and deep. You should have commented the live version as Brel’s performance was so emotionally charged. He was one of the greatest french speaking artists and a fellow Belgian 😊!
    But I have to admit that still to this day I feel like crying hearing this song. Especially if I have an off day.
    You should comment La Bohème from Aznavour. Amazingly beautiful song. Impossible for me to listen to it without shedding a tear!

    Probably the best known version of this song (in the US and UK) is the barely recognisable "If You Go Away" by Terry Jacks, singing Rod McKuen's English translation, but in a more up beat pop single way. (McKuen translated a lot of Brel's songs and Jacks had another bigger hit with 'Seasons in the Sun', which was McKuen's translation of Brel's 'Le Moribund').

    Now you are a bona fide connoisseur of ‘la chanson francophone’: RESPECT, DERECK! In France ‘Ne me quitte pas’ is regularly voted as the best song in French ever. There is a more recent cover by Wyclef Jean (of Fugees fame, who is Haitian, i.e. a French speaker) as well as a classic version by Nina Simone. Also regularly touted as the most popular song in France, there is ‘Mistral gagnant’ by Renaud, with a beautiful cover by Cœur de Pirate and another one by Vanessa Paradis and Maxime Le Forestier.

    This was my first time listening to this artist's version. His version was great. Never heard a male singer sing this song. Dusty Springfield's version was my first introduction to this piece. Like you said the song has been covered by other artists. I happen to like Dusty's version. Even Cyndi Lauper made an excellent version. Take a listen. Enjoy.🎶

    This is not just music this is art. Knowing songs of Jacques Brel is basic knowledge for life. Like Edith Piaf, Juliette Greco, Barbara, Charles Trenet, Charles Aznavour, Brassens, etc… it’s not that you have to love them dearly but one should know about them and their most famous songs and work of art, lyrics, style etc.. Jacques Brel: Quand on n‘a que l‘amour et Amsterdam sont indesponsable…

    I absolutely love that you reacted to Grand Jacques ! You should definitively react to Amsterdam, another of his classic songs, which has been covered by David Bowie (Port of Amsterdam) and Marianne Faithfull to name a few as well as been translated in many languages!
