I agree what makes bull sharks unique is with fresh water ability they get extended range. They are found world wide in rivers deep in Africa, Australia, even far up the Mississippi River. I know great whites have always been in the hamptons and I have personally seen them as a kid. Now scientists recently found a great white shark nursery off Montuck.
It is a fallacy that this location has much fresh water. This place is flushed by a huge high tide every 12 hours which is primarily salt water from the bay.
Interesting vid which gives a good feel for what happened all those years ago. I have always wondered what sort of shark was responsible. The likely culprit was a bullshark....a really big one. Here in Australia there were two attacks at Colleges Crossing in the 60s. CC is a long way from the sea, about 40 km inland. Even today I wouldn't swim there cause it is still full of bull sharks.
This is a brackish, saltwater, inlet, that the tides comes in and out with the ocean. This Creek was also bigger and deeper than it is today. a Great white could have been disoriented and went down the river when the tide came in, got desperate for food, since it was now in a creek and then went out when the tide did. I have went down a rabbit hole with this story at this point.
All the evidence points towards a great white. It was a full moon that week, meaning higher tides, higher salinity. Research suggests that that week, the creek would have had 30 parts per 1000, which would be adequate for a great white.
The boys were jumping off the remains of the old Wyckoff boat docks. What is left of the road that led down to the docks has been somewhat obliterated by fill. The best landmark that I recall was a public works garage near the top of the old street that went down to the water. It was overgrown and almost jungle-like when I was last there.

We caught everything in old bridge Bass, Pickerel, Bull heads, Perch white and yellow, crappie even Ice Fishing too if the winter provided some ice.
Maybe no bull sharks officially caught but logical. Things also change over time. I remember seeing great whites in the hamptons in the 1970's. Than they disappeared probably by over fishing until protected. Now with seal colony in Massachusetts the great whites have Made a big comeback. In fact scientists knew they were giving birth in hamptons area and doing so for some time. Recently reported they found great white nursery in montauck.
Just so everyone knows, this creek at high tide has a significant saltwater intake in it. A 9ft Great White was actually caught at the mouth during that time. There are videos now of great whites in estuaries. I sincerely believe it was the 9ft great white. Also of note it had strange flesh in it that was confirmed to be human remains.
I disagree as many people over time including a recent author speculated that it was a bull shark. As you know they are found the works over and even use rivers to give birth and protect young. GReat whites love open ocean and I have seen them come right up to the shire in Montauk NY. However, I never heard of great whites ever being spotted going up River. Bull sharks on,y species known to expel fresh water while great whites do not have that ability. Your salinity level sounds plausible but not likely. Either way most likely multiple sharks as bull sharks nit large enough to bite a person in half. A great white can and has fine so in Australia on several occasions.
Did you see the jellyfish? Right there at the site of the shark attack, and doing fine. That's a salt water species, and there it is, in the creek--because the tide is high, and it's almost as salty as the ocean. The attacks happened during high tide, and ceased during low tide--a Bull Shark wouldn't care what the tide was. People thought Great Whites would never go into San Francisco Bay, and yet they've been found around Alcatraz Island, well inside the Golden Gate Bridge. They can and do venture into less salty water. Whatever species this was, it was behaving strangely--and there are no records--ZERO--of Bull Sharks in the creek. They found a Great White right outside it, with human remains in its stomach. Nobody found a single Bull, in spite of the locals killing every shark they could find for weeks afterward. And witnesses reported the shark being dark on top, and pale below. In the murky creek, the much less distinct difference between the top and bottom of a Bull Shark would probably not have been visible. It was a Great White.
@@sniperbojy Actually, there was a full moon at the time which caused a high tide. A Great White was caught coming out of the creek with human remains in its stomach. The high validly of salt water would allow for a Great White to swim up the creek.
