  • Comparison of 10 different fuzz/drive pedals in the context of stoner and doom metal. I'm running them through the normal channel of a 1970's Peavey Standard (master volume version). The preamp gain is set very low on the amp so all the distortion is coming from the pedals. Some of these surprised me, which one do you prefer?
Pedals included: EHX Black Russian Big Muff PI, EHX Green Russian Big Muff PI, EHX Big Muff PI, Behringer Super Fuzz, Behringer Heavy Metal, Boss FZ-5, Joyo Ultimate Drive, Danelectro Pastrami, ProCo Rat, and Danelectro FAB Metal.
Signal chain in order: HH Strat (C# Standard)+ Pedal + Peavey Standard + Traynor YGC-412 (Eminence Cannabis Rex Speakers) + Shure SM57 + Focusrite Scarlett Solo. Reverb is from the DAW.

That danelectro Fab was surprising. I got what I expected from the rest but that one had me pay attention.

You definitely need a Keeley Fuzz Bender in this video. I played one into a thunderverb 200. It's like being jacked into a lighting bolt.

Ironically, my two favorites, by far, are the Green Russian and the FAB. They're at nearly the opposite tonal extremes. If the signal was split between them and re-combined, that would be something.
I'm surprised by how digital or. . . something, the RAT sounds. It's like the harmonics sound incredibly artificial and disconnected from the roots, to my ears, at least. But, that's exactly what some people want, so?
That's an excellent comparison Caleb(this is super weird, that's my name too, and my maternal side is Anderson), thanks for sharing it.

Ive always thought that the green Russian was a good balance between the Black and the PI. Less mid range than the Black and less mid hi fuzzy's of the PI. However, it depends on the application and mix of the band/song. Damn, fuzz is awesome!
