  • Some of the top vintage sports card collections in world are held in private collections. Many of the cards aren't seen by the public, and we have no idea how they came to be. I'm truly honored to have the opportunity to interview my friend Dave, and find out the process that he took in order to build one of the most elite collections on earth. He goes into the history of collecting, how he created his collection, the philosophy he uses in building it, and so much more. You can see from the smile on my face that I'm having the time of my life, talking with my friend about his cards. You won't want to miss part 2, where we actually VIEW his sports card collection. It is truly mind blowing.

I started in 1972. I had about 10-20 packs that first year. From there until 1981, I collected every set. It was amazing in 1980 when I could buy a set from Renata Galasso! Up till then there was nothing! I then started getting Beckett monthly in 1986. I stopped for some time. Got back into it. Stopped, etc. I was in Desert Storm and was able to get 80% of the set while in Oman. Finished it during COVID. Now on a Hank Aaron base card kick. Only need his rookie card. Fun.

I am at the part where Dave said he asked someone what he should collect and that really hit the spot for me. I wish everyday as a 10 year old someone would have told me how to collect or at least give me some advice on how they collect. I know most of us on youtube always say collect what you love and dont listen to anyone but the truth is listening to long time collectors on how they go about it and getting a soft point or nudge in the right direction is such a jump start. There was a time I decided on my own to buy all the big cards in the hobby all sports and I did but I got really scared to hold onto them after having them a few years and sold them except for a few. I wish I had someone to talk some sense into me and someone to give me some advice about it. Getting advice is so important in all aspects of life and why not in card collecting as well. Ok let me keep listening this is just awesome. Also loved the Sharp Corners comment that was truly how everyone collected !!!

Wonderful conversation and outstanding questions. It’s probably my confirmation bias talking, but the advice to build a small collection of awesome cards really hit home with me. As I’ve only been back in the hobby for four years, this collecting path has made a lot of sense to me. Thanks for all you give to the hobby! Dave

Great interview. And great learning more about Dave, too. Set collecting, was a staple of the hobby. For myself, there are definitely a few vintage sets I would love to be a completion-ist. It could happen one day. But sadly, the registry makes the challenge much more cumbersome. Anyway thanks for having him on, Graig. Looking forward to the next episode.

What a great interview. I love hearing different strategies collectors have. He mentioned he used to have no structure and just collected everything. I think most of us do that at first then narrow it done so not to get overwhelmed. For me, I'm now strictly pre-war. Its become more challenging and much more fun. Your cliffhanger at the end of this video made me want to punch my computer screen. HAHA Can't wait to see his collection.
