    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Lt. Kaffee's (Tom Cruise) search for the truth hits a roadblock in Col. Jessep (Jack Nicholson).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    In this military courtroom drama based on the play by Aaron Sorkin, Navy lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) is assigned to defend two Marines, Pfc. Louden Downey (James Marshall) and Lance Cpl. Harold Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison), who are accused of the murder of fellow leatherneck Pfc. William Santiago (Michael de Lorenzo) at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Kaffee generally plea bargains for his clients rather than bring them to trial, which is probably why he was assigned this potentially embarassing case, but when Lt. Commander JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore) is assigned to assist Kaffee, she is convinced that there's more to the matter than they've been led to believe and convinces her colleague that the case should go to court. Under questioning, Downey and Dawson reveal that Santiago died in the midst of a hazing ritual known as "Code Red" after he threatened to inform higher authorities that Dawson opened fire on a Cuban watchtower. They also state that the "Code Red" was performed under the orders of Lt. Jonathan Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland). Kendrick's superior, tough-as-nails Col. Nathan Jessup (Jack Nicholson), denies any knowledge of the order to torture Santiago, but when Lt. Col. Matthew Markinson (J.T. Walsh) confides to Kaffee that Jessup demanded the "Code Red" for violating his order of silence, Kaffee and Galloway have to find a way to prove this in court. A Few Good Men also features Kevin Bacon as prosecuting attorney Capt. Jack Ross and Kevin Pollak as Kaffee and Galloway's research assistant, Lt. Sam Weinberg.

      I'm sorry John but your attempt to create a hypothetical scenario to make one appreciate more the excellence of Nicholson here has become a statement for criticism. What a sad state of affairs. Remember Jessup didn't rip anyones heart out, or order a firing squad, but the power, control and narcissism Jack projects here is totally believable and frightening.

      There is an interview with Rob Reiner (the director) where he asked if Nicholson wanted to be shot first, or if he wanted him to film the reactions of Cruise, Demi, etc first to let him come into it. Apparently during all these shots Nicholson gave it his 100% and the actual take was no different than the ones before.

      I didn't know that, did he really improvise and said instead of "You already have the truth", "You can't handle the truth?"

The to have someone take then, internalize them and then send them back our not as two-dimensons on a page, but a spinning Rubik's cube of emotion and meaning that has been solved for on all sides. Its subtle how he blinks... almost to signify him reigning his momentous thoughts backwards for a moment. You could read that it was a bit forced to say the word "tragic".. either that he had to force himself to think of how it was "tragic"... or he was to give it weight...
      I couldn't call it sarcastic, because for it to be sarcasm, it has to be more sure which of the two (he Doesnt care, or Does care) is reality... so that the juxtoposition of two opposites (with one being more clear than the other) is felt sharply... as to make a point
      He seems more decided its one way... he is saying its "tragic" and "important" with the way he speaks it... His eyes do show he's forcing it... but this doesn't automatically contrast to the opposite strongly... it doesn't necessarily betray in an obvious way that he actually feels the opposite of what he's saying (where he would think its unimportant) ... it just shows he potentially doesn't want to admit something... or at best is giving it more consideration in a moment...
      If he does feel the opposite and DOESNT CARE, he would never want to "make the point" or communicate strongly, so sarcasm would quickly be the wrong tool to use. Its lying, or intention to consider

    • @TheSaniss
      @TheSaniss 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@austinzobel4613 I agree. His eyes betray him, because he almost never blinks for the whole duration of the monologue. He's in power. But when he says "tragic", he blinks several times and seems like he's losing control for a second, as if the word was forced out of his mouth. He had to say it, but doesn't believe one bit that Santiago's death was tragic.
      This monologue is an acting masterclass. It's phenomenal.

    Jack Nicholson repeated his famous courtroom monologue as Colonel Jessep off-camera several times so Rob Reiner could film the reactions of other actors and actresses from various angles. Nicholson's memorable on-camera performance was filmed last, but according to Reiner and the other cast members, Nicholson gave it his all every take as if he was on camera. Nicholson said he was "quite spent" by the time he finished.

You, my delicate husband?! I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for the cheese and you curse Domino's. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not doing what I do. That this pizza without cheese, while tragic, probably spared our noses! And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, spared our noses! You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me with that deodorant, you need me with that deodorant. We use words like clean, neat, fragrance. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very cleaning that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up an air freshener, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
