In Bombo, Luwero District, Uganda, Mr. Masum Abdalla has become a symbol of resilience and dedication in the poultry farming industry. His journey began in 1970 when he first ventured into poultry farming. By the 1970s, he had established a thriving business, with the capacity to rear between 5,000 and 6,000 chicks at a time. However, the political turmoil following the collapse of Iddi Amin's government forced him into exile in Kenya. Upon his return in the 1990s, Mr. Abdalla found that his once-flourishing poultry farm had been destroyed, with no buildings, equipment, or funds left.
Undeterred by the challenges, Mr. Abdalla started over from scratch. Although he could no longer rear thousands of chicks at a time, he began slowly, focusing on rebuilding his business with the knowledge and experience he had gained over the years. His farm is now a testament to the rewards of persistence in the face of adversity.
Mr. Abdalla believes that poultry farming is a rewarding business, but it requires proper information and dedication. He advises newcomers to start small, with around 100 broilers, which are easier to manage and mature quickly, ready for market within 7 to 8 weeks. This approach minimizes risks, especially for those with limited experience and capital.
One of the critical aspects Mr. Abdalla emphasizes is the importance of proper feeding, vaccination, and structure. He notes that while you can improvise on structures to reduce costs, feeding and vaccination are non-negotiable. Improvised drinkers and feeders can be used, and even old jerry cans can serve as drinkers. However, neglecting vaccination can lead to devastating losses, as untreated diseases can wipe out entire flocks.
Mr. Abdalla also highlights the importance of sourcing chicks from reliable hatcheries, many of which are now available in Uganda. He cautions against compromising on the quality of chicks, as starting with healthy, well-bred chicks is crucial for success.
Regarding feeding, Mr. Abdalla suggests mixing your own feed as a cost-effective alternative to commercial feeds. With the right formula and ingredients, farmers can reduce feeding costs significantly. He also advises farmers to consider the local market demand when deciding which type of poultry to rear, noting that broilers are often easier to market due to their short growth cycle.
Despite the challenges, including fluctuating prices of maize (a key ingredient in poultry feed) and market uncertainties, Mr. Abdalla remains optimistic. He encourages farmers not to overlook the potential of local breeds, which, though often neglected, can be highly profitable if given proper care and attention.
In conclusion, Mr. Abdalla's story is one of determination, adaptability, and success in poultry farming. His advice to aspiring farmers is to start small, focus on the essentials, and remain committed to learning and improving. With the right approach, poultry farming can be a highly rewarding venture.
