Full Details of a Squarebody Restomod - 1986 Chevy Suburban Restoration

  • It’s been 2 years since we brought the beautiful (but loud) blue Suburban home to overhaul her for a daily driver and family fun mobile. We are recapping the original condition of the 1986 squarebody Chevy Suburban, challenges of a squarebody restomod so far, and projects we still plan to complete.

    Full list of all work completed for the Chevy Suburban restoration:
    • Re-packed the front wheel bearings
    • Replaced the rear wheel bearings
    • Drained the rear diff oil
    • Damaged spider gears replaced with a Quick Performance posi
    • Bad u-joints in driveshaft replaced
    • Replaced control arm (used part)
    • Built and welded a notch for rear including removal of flip brackets, welding on new spring perches and centering the tire in the rear wheel well
    • Removal of air shocks that did not function and fabricated extended shock mounts for use of stock length Bilstein shocks
    • Power locks replaced
    • Installation of the temperature sensor for a compass/temperature rearview mirror
    • LS Swap
    o Installation of Holley transmission crossmember
    o Low mount AC compressor
    o Fixing of an AC leak and installation of Vintage Air
    o Replacement of gas tank and pump (Pump is a delphi FG0402 - lock ring is just standard GM part TR26)
    o Gas pedal modification
    o Mounting the TAC, ECM, and carving up the stock battery tray to mount the airbox on it - later replaced with Slosh Tubz inner fenders
    • Clean up of various wiring
    • Radio swap out
    • LED headlight upgrade
    • Transmission replacement
    • Installation of a 2005 Suburban roof rack
    • Replaced seals in the steering box
    • New leaf springs in attempt to fix “lean”
    • Replaced weatherstripping
    • Installation of Speed Engineering headers
    • Passenger side dent repair (front fender)

    Iv always wanted to restore a suburban more than likely tho a 4×4 and a 2 wheel drive

    Looking to swap my suburban little stuff like cam and springs what mpg do you get on the highway

      This engine is a stock L33 with the stock cam. I did put it together this way hoping for the best mileage I could. The rear has 3.73 gears and this summer I got 19mpg at 70-75mph and 18mpg with a canoe on top. Hope that helps!
