When you use your army sealer you can avoid the nozzle clogging by turning the can upside down and spray the remaining sealant till it sprays clear. Then you won't have to change nozzles as often. Hope it helps.
FInally someone offering to show alternatives! Thank you! Now, I have a question. I'm considering starting to do repaints, and I have some old Bratz dolls I'd like to try on first, but the only sealant I found in my country is Liquitex Spray Matte Finish, and Gloss Finish. I suppose they are similar to the brush on some people use, but these are in spray, so do you know if they could be used on dolls at all? Specifically lower-budget dolls, not BJD. If you could answer this, it would be very helpful!
+Reilith I have heard of people using Liquitex to good success, I just don't know about using them on vinyl. I think the airbrush version can be used on dolls like that. But I am at the end of my tether here as I don't really repaint lower-budget dolls, really sorry I can't be more helpful. I'm glad you liked my video nonetheless.
Reilith I saw on someone else’s video they used the spray liquitex and it didn’t work well. I don’t know where you are but I highly recommend looking at your local pawn shops for an airbrush compressor and gun. I know I found one at my local shop for around 50$ for the pair!
THANKS for this MSC not easy to get in the UK. Quick tip, for any type of sealant, at the end of a session, whilst spraying hold the can upside down;nozel at the base. Keep spraying till it stops spraying. This clears the rest from the 'pipe' and wipe the nozel to stop anything dryingon the fine nozels too. Very helpful video thanks so much x
Thanks so much for this, I was about to buy Army Painter but I live that has a lot of high humidity and I'm kind of new to face-ups. MSC didn't work for me because there wasn't enough tooth to it, so I'm glad I watched this first or I probably would've given up on faceups altogether XD
Thank you very much for this video! I am just starting to do face ups, and was wondering about sealing available in the Netherlands, Your video made things very clear. Thank you
Brilliant review! I was looking for a sealant as msc is almost impossible to get in the UK and I had gone into Games workshop and spoke to someone but he couldn't tell me if the Citadel satin varnish would give a matt finish! ...So watching your review has been so helpful and I am definitely going back to buy some! thank you, thank you, thank you :-)
I have been using Army Painter for couple of years and you can get rid of the clogging problem if you spray the bottle upside down for a few seconds after every spray session.
Oh thank you...MSC is super toxic and really difficult to get in London! This is definitely worth a like and a subscription!... I will try these and get back to you with how I get on at the beginning of the year (it will take me a while to get back to you because I have a few....will definitely let you know because there's only a couple like this.... I won't be taking them out In the sun lol!) Excellent video btw...well researched and well presented!
I live in Finland and I use Citadel and it has worked very very well! First I looked for Army Painter but there was no Army Painter so luckily I bought Citadel and I'm very happy with the results :) Thank you for this video! I've always wondered how Army Painter is when compared to Citadel.
Thanks for your video, it was very helpful to me as i am just starting out with the face up thing and i didn't want to order the MSC for all the reasons you mentioned and i was looking for an alternative, so Thank you very much for making this great video x
I am using Rustoleum. It is UV-resistant, non-yellowing AND it can be used on plastic! That being said, my husband also bought me a professional-grade face mask that will protect me from the toxins of the spray. PLEASE do not use any sealant without protecting yourself!
I was actually hoping this Lukas product would work on my eah doll, but now I know why she's so sticky :( I guess I'll try removing it and find another sealant. Glad I draw and paint at least it won't be a waist.
Thank you for this video! It was very useful! I'm living in germany and i couldnt find any sealant that i can get in a local shop for my beloved dolls.
I have covered Citadel's new Munitorum Varnish in a newer video. By my judgement (and this will probably be different for everyone) it's an improved version and it has performed a little better, at least for me (caused less issues with clouding, for instance). After having used Munitorum Varnish for over a year, I have no further complaints and can recommend it for safe use on faceups. :) Hope that helps!
very interesting !! Thanks for this video !! I always use the citadel purity seal too, but i had some bad finish results sometimes, i don't know excatlly why, i suppose it was the weather... i will try the lukas ! :)
Hmmm, great finds! I've lately been looking for a NON-TOXIC option. Ha. Best of luck on that one. There is one out there that I just learned about....but I'll have to research some more.
Yeah, that really is a tough one. :D I've heard Liquitex is supposed to be non-toxic, I don't have any expertise in that field though yet so I reviewed those sealants I've had experience with. :)
Thanks so much for this review! Thanks to you I've picked up some Army Painter from my local WarHammer shop (they unfortunately don't carry Purity Seal). I haven't tried it out yet, but when I'll get the chance, I'll definitely add my thoughts to it! (By the way, highfive for similar names, haha. Totally wasn't intentional).
You're very welcome, high five right back at you! I love your name and I think it is very unique! :) Yes please do let me know what you think of Army Painter!
Haha, thanks! ^^ It's been my username for a ton of things since I was 12. And yeah, as soon as I get my doll (and a decently dry day) I'll tell you want I think! ^^
the problem i have with msc is that i live in a place were it is the Arctic in the winter and it is SUPER humid and hot in the summer. the only time it is good weather is a very short time in spring. so there is no decent to have msc work to its fullest extent, and that would be very pesky
i wonder if army painter has different packaging/ compounds depending on the country. the cans i have here are the bigger nozzle, and never have any clogging/ blotching issues in any weather.
This was really really useful!!! Thank you! I currently have a stash of MSD but it would be awesome to have an alternative that is easier to get! I sure will try to get some Lukas spray and Citadel :)

Hi, hope anyone will answer this question, I can't find any info about it on the internet, does MSC have a «best before» date? Mine is like 5 years old, not sure I can use this on my resin doll...
hmm I don't know if someone already told it but unfortunately Citadel has modified the composition of the Purity seal (I used to use it because it was in my opinion the best sealant.... but not anymore). Now the Purity seal is kinda hard to use because it's often whitening when it dries, it's more fragile than before. It's obviously not the same than before :/
Yes, I have heard of this. I have yet to try out the new formulated one as I was still able to come by the older version. Once I do though I will make a video on how I feel about it. Thank you for the info!
Thank you sooooo much for this video! I've been wanting to repaint MH dolls for ever but can never find a sealant, I'd propbably go for the citidal one as my boyfriend is into WarHammer and he'll know exactly where to get it
+Gala Valentina very thin layers and I always layer 3 coats before each faceup and one between each layer of pastels. I have found that liquitex or golden brush on applied with an airbrush is what works best for me.
I am going to try either spraying pva (mod podge) or sponging (with cosmetic sponges) PVA on to a couple of cheap Monster High type dolls which I am practicing on... I will let you know.... I need to write down your name... I will let you know how I get on... I have various dolls big BJD and MH and Barbie types so I am looking for the least toxic all rounder I can use!
May I ask you what you use to remove a face up that is sealed with Lukas Spruh Film? I've read that it needs turpentine to remove it but turpentine isn't really safe to use on a resin bjd.
I'm new to the bjd hobby and wondered if the army sealant would be a good option for near permanent sealing of a dyed resin doll? I want to dye my doll a dark brown and I'm worried that other sealants such as msc won't hold the color strongly.
+Pamela Young honestly, nothing is going to be permanent. unless you dye the bare resin (not recommended) you're always going to have some chipping to deal with, especially if you handle the doll frequently. you may as well get a sealant that isn't a complete bitch to remove when the time comes.
VERY helpful video - thanks a bunch!! Lukas seems to be a German brand - noticed the word "Sprühfilm" which is German :) and it's very easy to find in Germany which is a huge plus! I wonder though: Do you still need respiratory protection with those alternative sealants (especially Lukas) ?
+Agent Knopf Uuuh never mind about the respiratory protection question, found the answer further down in the comments - thanks again for the video :D !
This is really helpful! I was wondering though, how many layers of sealants do you normally put on a normal faceup? And what do you do first(blush, eyeshadow, lips)?
+Stephen Lee This is quite a multifaceted question that I would like to answer in future videos. Every faceup artist has their own unique approach and even when you have a routine it changes from time to time. :)
Very useful video, thank you! I was thinking, have you tried to take your favorite nozzle off and put it on the other can? I think it would work. :) * Nitro *
Thanks IM trying to learn more about sealants! I really appreciate your videos! I have a question. Do you think the Citadel Purity Seal work with water colours on PVC? Have you tried? I am planning no customizing a Azone Pureneemo doll. I'm trying to gather as much information as possible. Knowledge is power :D lol
Knowledge truly is power, and more knowledge means more power! :D Hm, if you build up enough layers of purity seal underneath you should be able to use watercolour pencils just fine, because the sealant will create a base that you can work on. But I don't have any Azones so I cannot tell you for sure, I just know that as a sealant, it should definitely work. Thank you!
I recently bought a resin bjd head that already has a faceup. The faceup isn't new but is in good condition and I would like to keep it protected. I have a couple of questions. 1. Can you use Lukas Spray over the msc? 2. Just like using msc, would you have to wear a filtered mask and gloves with the Lukas Spray?
+AGothicFairyTale Lukas Spray film was made for artwork. You can layer it over the MSC but I would recommend getting a stronger sealant to use because Lucas is not so strong and durable. I always recommend using a filtered mask if you are planning on doing many faceups in the future, but if you are just going to add a layer to an existing faceup, then I wouldn't make the investment. Just always make sure you are using it outside or a well-ventilated area and are spraying away from eyes and skin. I hope I could help and sorry for the late reply.
Hello. I used the Lukas on a test area. The sealant has dried quickly, but now the surface is a bit sticky. You know tell me if this defect passes with time or not? Thanks a lot for the answer. :)
Diego Albanese Hi! I have had this same problem when using the Lukas spray on vinyl dolls. It isn’t something that goes away unfortunately, which makes me think that this sealant isn’t very suitable for vinyl. If you are spraying a resin doll and this happens then you probably have just got a faulty can and need to replace it. To double check, I’d give the can a long, hard shake and then try again just to be sure. Hope I could help!
@@crescentfellcollecting Hi, thanks for answering me! ^_^ Unfortunately, my doll is made of vinyl and I don't think there are many solutions... The only good thing is that I did the test on a small part that will be hidden by the wig. Thanks again for the answer! ^_^
I got a Winsor & Newton matt varnish for a sealant and I sprayed it on a monster high doll. Before letting the first layer completely dry I gave her the second one and let in dry in a room overnight. When I got in that room the next day I noticed that it was too hot and my doll's face was sticky and shiny. :( I'm new to this and I seriously don't know what to do...Can you give me some advice please?
The same thing happened to me when I first used the Lucas sealant on a Monster High doll. It was a hot day and my mistake was that I sprayed the sealant too close to the doll as well. I believe that the Lucas sealant and the Winsor & Newton varnish are art sealants that have low resistance to heat and bad compatibility with vinyl. That is why I would recommend a tried and trusted sealant that has been used by other artists on Monster High or other vinyl dolls. I myself do not faceup Monster High dolls so I can't recommend a suitable option. But I am sure if you search other artists who do then you will find something. Good luck and I hope I could help!
+Michelle LoveJapan I am sorry to hear that it is so tough! The one thing I would recommend is to try and share a can with someone else? Unfortunately sealant doesn't come cheap especially if you order online. My advice would be though to not use something that hasn't been tested on BJDs before. So just because something is okay for one medium, doesn't mean it can be good for faceups. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Try and find a Warhammer store or a store that sells wargaming materials (and ask for Purity Seal/Army Painter sealants) they might be able to order some in for you or even carry it in-store.
I live in Norway and I am having a REALLY hard time finding a sealant that ships to my country and works on dolls like Monster High dolls. Do you know of any sprays that I could use? (I am pretty new to faceups so I want to start with a cheaper doll)
+Hanna Dahl Otnem Purity Seal should be available to ship from Amazon or, alternatively, Games Workshop online store. It works fine for MH dolls, good luck!
Just wondering if u have tried using valspar clear Matt sealant spray, or if u think it would be ok to use? Only struggling to find a sealant and I’ve heard Liquitex, ( which is the only only one I can find) isn’t very good for watercolour pencils, though it’s not too bad if used with an airbrush, which I don’t have! I’ve been wanting to have a go at doll repainting, and will probably end up using mh doll or something similar. T.i.a
Hi, I have not had experience with that sealant. But if it is meant for artists' use then it might be suitable for sealing, just be careful with adding many layers as I'm unsure how durable it will be when layered. Also, it might not be suitable for use on vinyl dolls. Maybe try a sealant that has been used successfully in the past just to be sure. Hope this was helpful, sorry I couldn't offer much insight.
PocketWolf thinking this is going to be a case of trial and error for me, as limited to sealant I can get 😕 think I’m going to have to use a brush on 🙈 lol. Thank u for replying! I appreciate it!
Lauren Peters No hairspray is not a suitable sealant for faceups, it may work for art but I would not recommend using it on a bjd. The sealants I mention in this video are all good for faceups. Using a proper sealant when doing faceups is the most important thing so invest in something that is tried and tested.
Go to a cool (around 18 degrees celsius) and dry room in your house that you can vent well, like a cellar room. Seal your heads there if it really isn't possible outside.
Unfortunately I have no experience with Pullips so I can't tell you if this sealant is suitable for them or not. If their heads are from the same material as Monster High dolls though, then it should definitely work. Hope I could help!
Please help me :'( I am having the most aggervating time trying to do body blushing on my tan minifee. I have used Mr. Super clear on her and when I strung her back together she chipped on all her joint spots! T__T And I sprayed her twice. Im scared to use liquitex because ive heard mixed reviews that it comes off in water or it makes the resin yellow and cloud.. and I just want something that preferably I can go to Hobby lobby or Joanns and pick up so im not waiting forever when I run out of MSC. And That removes with acetone. I am completely frustrated and you seem to be the only person. Who knows what theyre talking about. I hope you can help me.. sorry for whining.. but you can imagine how frustrated I am.. and I dont want to ruin my girl T__T
cassiebroly8 I am glad to help if I can. Firstly, don't worry about ruining your bjd with sealant, all traces of it can be removed with nail varnish remover. To prevent sealant chipping over joints is a tricky business. Mainly because the sealants aren't made to withstand so much strain from the joints rubbing together. You can however gloss the areas where the joints touch and then seal those areas again to get rid of the shine. As far as I know, this is the only method that can prevent chipping to some extent. Personally I always seal my dolls' body blushing when they're fully strung because I don't want the sealant to be all over the joint and also to avoid chipping. Just remember, no sealant is meant to be permanent. I can understand your frustration, try to stay calm and let me know if I could help. :)
From experience I'd say full cloud covered days are perfectly fine, slight mist is also okay. Mild temperatures down to 10° Celsius work well if the can is not cold (tested this myself). However if it starts to rain full on and doesn't stop then I wouldn't spray. Purity Seal is quite withstanding for a sealant, so it can take quite a bit of humidity. Hope I could help!
Hi! Bist du zufällig deutsch? Man findet so wenig Informationen auf deutsch. Ich suche eine Alternative zu Mr. Super Clear für meine Monster High Experimente...
Hi!
I got a sealant and the warning said cancerous and reproductive problems and I was like hell no so I had to safely dispose of it....I need to research more
+elisa cueto I have no experience using Lucas on dolls other than BJDs. I wouldn't try it because I think it will not react well with the material, my advise would be to go for a sealant that has been tried and tested on pullips. Hope I could help.
+Izzy Studio Yes. Vallejo is apparently non toxic as well as Liquitex. There is a review of Vallejo Sealant here that is very good: jointedlove.blogspot.de/2016/02/how-to-use-vallejo-on-bjds.html
KenzieHurlock My video is targeted towards people who collect resin BJDs. I do not claim to have the answers for everyone. I‘m sure you can find other resources on the web that will help you find the appropriate tools for vinyl dolls.
okies fast question i have used liquitex matte varnish after sealing my dolls face up a few times his face was shiny kinda looked greasy i know you did not use that brand in your video but the sealants you did show where matte , i just want to know am i spraying to much to where it come out with that shiny look and not matte
Usually, if it does not dry matte then your sealant isn't matte (obvious answer is obvious^^). But that aside, if your head looks wet or shiny when you spray it then you are either 1. spraying too much or 2. holding the can (or pistol) too close to the doll's head. Always make sure you are holding your sealant at least 30cm away from your target, you don't need to necessarily "see" the sealant to know its doing it's job. :) Liquitex is a good brand though and you should be able to achieve good results with the matte varnish, let me know if there's anything else I could help you with!
hi, I found a random lukas spray varnish at home and I saw that what you had was lukas 2322 and I have 2321. have you tried 2321 before? I want to know if it works on vinyl, but can't find an answer online
I am about 90% sure that Games Workshop’s Purity Seal is available in Ireland. I highly doubt that hairsprays will work as a buildable sealant as it has different properties. It may work for sealing in drawings but for resin dolls, I’d say it’s better to go for something tried and trusted.
When you use your army sealer you can avoid the nozzle clogging by turning the can upside down and spray the remaining sealant till it sprays clear. Then you won't have to change nozzles as often. Hope it helps.
This has worked, yes. :)

Army Painter doesn't work for Monster High or Dolfie Dream. The surface will turn soft and sticky! For resin bjd it is perfect.

+Agent Knopf No problem :) Thanks!
Would mod podge spray matte sealant work on monster high dolls?
Is it safe to use the games work shop sealant for starting of and finishing cuz I'm just a beginner in face ups and I don't wanna use to much money
I live in Louisiana so it's always very humid here dose anybody have any recommendations?
I am in Louisiana too and look for the same thing.
Can the Citadel sealant be used on vinyl? And is it waterproof?
This is really helpful! I was wondering though, how many layers of sealants do you normally put on a normal faceup? And what do you do first(blush, eyeshadow, lips)?
+Stephen Lee This is quite a multifaceted question that I would like to answer in future videos. Every faceup artist has their own unique approach and even when you have a routine it changes from time to time. :)
Was für eine Gasmaske brauche ich denn für die Citadel-Grundierung?
Very useful video, thank you! I was thinking, have you tried to take your favorite nozzle off and put it on the other can? I think it would work. :)
* Nitro *
Question: the Citadel sealant, does it clean off well, too? I know on 40K models they're not meant to be cleaned off.
it cleans off fine with acetone or with Windsor and Newton brush cleaner.
Lucas is it good for fixing blythe makeup?
Thank you!
Such a helpful video thank you
I recently bought a resin bjd head that already has a faceup.
+PocketWolf What matte sealant would you recommend that is stronger but not heavy or weather sensitive, and easy to use?
Can it be used on epoxy resin?i mean the last sealant you mention
So useful, thank you!
put another cap on it? on the army painter?
Thanks! How about alternatives for aves apoxie?
No experience with the material I'm afraid. So I can't help you there.
Hello. I used the Lukas on a test area. The sealant has dried quickly, but now the surface is a bit sticky. You know
tell me if this defect passes with time or not? Thanks a lot for the answer. :)
Diego Albanese Hi! I have had this same problem when using the Lukas spray on vinyl dolls. It isn’t something that goes away unfortunately, which makes me think that this sealant isn’t very suitable for vinyl. If you are spraying a resin doll and this happens then you probably have just got a faulty can and need to replace it.
To double check, I’d give the can a long, hard shake and then try again just to be sure.
Hope I could help!

Hi, thanks for answering me! ^_^ Unfortunately, my doll is made of vinyl and I don't think there are many solutions... The only good thing is that I did the test on a small part that will be hidden by the wig. Thanks again for the answer! ^_^
Very helpful review. Does the Citadel work for Monster high dolls?
The Purity Seal works on vinyl, however, the Lukas Sealant doesn't. :)
Which one is the most waterproof sealant?
i can't find any of these in Italy, and they are too expensive online, the ones used for painting and drawing are ok too?
Or would tamiya clear flat acrylic paint work? Sorry for the additional messaging
Hello!
Im interested in starting faceups, and because of the price of bjds ill be starting on monster high dolls. Any sealant suggestions for those?
Hi!
You can use Purity Seal on Monster High dolls it works just fine.
Good luck starting faceups!
thank you so much !!
I've used hair spray to seal drawing and it worked so would hair spray work for face ups??
Lauren Peters No hairspray is not a suitable sealant for faceups, it may work for art but I would not recommend using it on a bjd. The sealants I mention in this video are all good for faceups. Using a proper sealant when doing faceups is the most important thing so invest in something that is tried and tested.
Super helpful! Thank you. ^_^
i tried ordering citadel and army and neither of them ship to where i live in hungary :( any other ideas? im going crazy!!
+shira T Have you tried amazon? They could have it.
here in Florida its hot and humid a lot what do you recommend
Go to a cool (around 18 degrees celsius) and dry room in your house that you can vent well, like a cellar room. Seal your heads there if it really isn't possible outside.
Which one is best for Pullips? Or do these work on Pullips? I don't really know what BJDs are ::
*:/
Unfortunately I have no experience with Pullips so I can't tell you if this sealant is suitable for them or not. If their heads are from the same material as Monster High dolls though, then it should definitely work. Hope I could help!
PocketWolf Unfortunately no, but thanks :)
Thanks for sharing this video!
You're welcome! :)
thank you so much! :)
i found pastel and pencil sealant named fixative with uv filter do u think it can be good for dolls?
Could be suitable, I would test it on the head back first but definitely give it a go! (might not work very well with paints so keep that in mind!) :)
Do you have to wear a mask like for MSC? Is the last one toxic?
+A Dose of Dork These are all toxic so yes you would have to wear a mask!
What humidity range do you think works best for purity seal?
From experience I'd say full cloud covered days are perfectly fine, slight mist is also okay. Mild temperatures down to 10° Celsius work well if the can is not cold (tested this myself). However if it starts to rain full on and doesn't stop then I wouldn't spray. Purity Seal is quite withstanding for a sealant, so it can take quite a bit of humidity. Hope I could help!
PocketWolf Thank you very much! ^^
Hi! Bist du zufällig deutsch? Man findet so wenig Informationen auf deutsch. Ich suche eine Alternative zu Mr. Super Clear für meine Monster High Experimente...
Hi!
Can they work for barbie dolls?
I cannot say anything about Lucas Film and Army Painter, but I do know that Purity Seal works on vinyl so that might be your best shot. :)
Is Lukas toxic?? Btw Hi from Sweden 🌝
is the citadel work on mh doll heads?
+shira T I've tried it on MH dolls and in my opinion it works just fine, it does need a little longer to dry though.
thanks for replying! im studying in Europe and have been going crazy trying to find msc- your video really helped :)
what is the best sealant for monster high dolls?
+sarcasm I recommend Purity Seal because it has worked for me. But I am sure there are other options too. :)
PocketWolf oh thank you for your fast response :)!
I got a sealant and the warning said cancerous and reproductive problems and I was like hell no so I had to safely dispose of it....I need to research more
Are they toxic?
Yes, it would be wise to wear a mask when using these sealants.
PocketWolf what kind?
I am planing to repaint a pullip doll and i want to know if i can use lucas on it
+elisa cueto I have no experience using Lucas on dolls other than BJDs. I wouldn't try it because I think it will not react well with the material, my advise would be to go for a sealant that has been tried and tested on pullips. Hope I could help.
have you tried citadel onf monster high dolls?
Zee Grey Yes and it works just fine. :)
PocketWolf
thanks for the info!
Are there any that are not toxic?
+Izzy Studio Yes. Vallejo is apparently non toxic as well as Liquitex.
There is a review of Vallejo Sealant here that is very good: jointedlove.blogspot.de/2016/02/how-to-use-vallejo-on-bjds.html
This isnt helping for vynal dolls
Ok thank you very much
which sealant is best for monster high dolls?
Army Painter isn't compatible with soft plastic dolls. It will turn sticky!
Msc is always best, but in a pinch, I've had success with Testors Dullcote. I've also seen people use purity seal with good reults.
I know it's late but Dollightful did one with Duraclear which you put on with cosmetic sponge wedges... I will let you know.
hi, I found a random lukas spray varnish at home and I saw that what you had was lukas 2322 and I have 2321. have you tried 2321 before? I want to know if it works on vinyl, but can't find an answer online
I'm not sure any of these are available in Ireland, would hairspray work as a temporary sealant?
I am about 90% sure that Games Workshop’s Purity Seal is available in Ireland. I highly doubt that hairsprays will work as a buildable sealant as it has different properties. It may work for sealing in drawings but for resin dolls, I’d say it’s better to go for something tried and trusted.
