Brian Downey in my eyes is the best drummer..my own opinion. iv grown up listening to thin lizzy from a very young age... i think he's very very UNDER-rated!
LIVE AND DANGEROUS,is the BEST LIVE Album from "LIZZY" ever !!! Greets from an 62 Year old (Born 1960) THIN LIZZY Fan,from GERMANY 🇩🇪🎤🎼🎸🥁🤟😎The LIVE/LIFE Album, was another MASTERPIECEand i got these two Vinyl Albums (and over 400 Vinyl Albums, also) at Home (And a Record Player too)
Although they did some great stuff with other guitarists in the line up , snowy white , Gary Moore and John Sykes for eg , I agree that this was there most iconic era , Reading festival 77 in the mud and rain they headlined on the Saturday night I was right at the front, feckin awsome 😎
What can you say. Thin Lizzy are one of the most iconic of classic rock bands. And as for a frontman, songwriter like Phil - well he was the epitome of what rock was and is. RIP legend. Still so sadly missed
Awesome,Brian Downey is right up there with the best rock drummers of all time,Heavy driving grooves with dynamics and feel that blow many others out of the water... i'm lucky enough to play in a band that do a few 'Lizzy' numbers...if only i had a fraction of Brian's skill :) ....'Emerald' always gets my in a cold sweat! lol
The three drummers at that time were all jazz/swing prog drummers. Ian paice, cozy powell, and my favorite Brian(the man)Downey. Those three drummers(legends)were the reason i started playing in the first place. These gentlemen are true players. My hats off to them...rock on!
You're right on both counts bill. I saw these at Wembley in 78, still the best gig I ever went to. My first big gig... UFO , stunning too, if I'd only seen then with schenker... The two best live rock albums bar none.
Your dad is bang on. I saw them on their farewell tour in '83 at Hammersmith Odeon. All the old guitarists were there. As a 16 year old and a fan of Lizzy for 7 years by then I can't explain what it felt like to see Phil in the flesh. I couldn't move. Still my favourite band of all time.
the first verse of this song = lyrical bliss, vocalist supremist....this is THE GREATEST THIN LIZZY line-up and if you think otherwise you must be out of your mind!!!!
true straight goin, u have to love the flanger... What an awsome guitar duo!! Thin Lizzy was so underrated at their time, it's a shame. The Live and Dangerous Double Album is a milestone in REAL music. (!!!) Absolutly a kind of it's own, this album is heckin' LEGEND !
Recently met Brian at Nells in west Kensington. Wow what a gig it was too. As a drummer myself ive always loved Brians drumming. I remember seeing this kit for sale in Rhythm magazine for sale many years ago. Wish i could have bought it.
I've Met Brian & Scott in '96 and John Skyes.. and it was a Magic moment in my life I shall never Forget.. Brian is a Great guy even put Me on Guest list for 2nd night in a row seeing em in Calif. yes I got autographs.. Thx for posting this Great Video
Not underrated, _understated._ He did a lot behind the scenes to keep Lizzy going. He was initially going to join _Grand Slam,_ but backed out, saying he didn't want to be in a second rate Thin Lizzy.
@thecouls I remember when I saw the show in Sweden on the same Tour. The drum solo was just mindmelting, they did some kind of sound effect so the drums solo swirled round the arena.
Brian fucking downey - how much better does it get? and lizzy themselves. As the years go by their legacy just seems to get stronger. What an incredible fucking band this was. Man, the 70's, the 70's!!!!!!
Brian Downey rocks on drums...watch him go mentle on those cage like drums! wheres the energy and skill come from!!!? wish i could play like THAT! keep watchin for the real long drum solo at the end
@thecouls Most big bands of today like Iron maiden and Motorhead look up to Thin lizzy, and they solomly miss them. Most Metal fans fail to appreciate this!
It's such a shame people like Brian Downey are so underrated only because he wasn't in any of the absolute biggest bands. If he did the exact same thing for well, Led Zeppelin, he would be one of the Gods ! Just like Bonzo :)
THAT WAS AWESOME! the other hard rock and metal bands, that are actually more popular, have so much to thank to thin lizzy.... the best double pedal drum solo I've ever heard before judas priest's Painkiller one
WOW! I found this because I love the Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "Walking in the Moonlight", but the guitar and drum work on this track are amazing! May have to listen to Thin Lizzy more often!
@apachestar Thanks for your backup apachestar, The who with Keith Moon were a bit like cream, when it worked it sounded great, but it didnt work very often, drummers are there for a reason, to hold it all together. The fact he never used a hi-hat says it all.
Nothing could get as heavy as this stuff for that time (except Stained Class) ... Thin Lizzy should be up there with Sabbath, Priest and Motörhead. That drum solo is insane! There's a Saxon moment from 4:15 to 4:22 (sounds like the ending of See The Light Shining, just two years earlier).
Kinda .. Thank You.. just Wish I could have Met Phil.. that would have Been The Best Ever. btw Aerosmith Back 30+yrs was also one the very Best, as was U.F.O Scorpions w/ Uli, Ac/Dc w/ Bon.. man those were the Days.. LONG LIVE Rockin ROLL. PieCe (-_o
sorry ur wrong :( Brian the drummer Downey..best drummer EVER EVER EVER..EVER!! worked with him one time in the 90's as a sound engineer. never saw GOD myself ie. Philo. met his Ma. im a photographer now.will never stop going to gigs. Lizzy always ruled(ok im old) Rock n roll never dies!!!
this is probably a pretty obscure fact but does anyone know what cymbals Downey used back then? I know they're Zildjians but always been curious to which line
Great Brian Downey solo.....Louis Bellson would have been proud. Thin were always better live. Unlike Queen, that I saw several times in the early 70's...their studio recordings, e.g.Queen 2, were sublime; on stage, then, a routine group with Brian May standing out..
Hey Guys! Who cares really who is irsh or not? I am a fucking german guy and I love them all! I don´t care about if one of those is irish, english or geman or what ever! They did a great music together and there is no doubt about it! For me Phil is the greatest songwriter ever, Brian the best drummer ever and all of them guitar player are great! Every one of them has it´s special type of playing guitars and I can tell only by hearing them, who it is! So let´s cool down and enjoy the music!
Brian Downey in my eyes is the best drummer..my own opinion. iv grown up listening to thin lizzy from a very young age... i think he's very very UNDER-rated!
This is by far my favorite Thin Lizzy lineup. They had a level of chemistry that that the other lineups simply didn't have.
And the drum solo is insane!!
True. I saw this lineup 10 or 11 times in london between nigjtlife and bad reputation.
LIVE AND DANGEROUS,is the BEST LIVE Album from "LIZZY" ever !!!

One of the greatest the great Brian Downey! The first three albums are really a treat to listen to Brian Downey just like the rest!
one of thr greatest Hard Rock bands of all times, Brian Downey very underrated drummer!!
I think you mean _understated._ He doesn't have to be Bonham, Moon or Peart to be highly rated.
One of the meanist Thin Lizzy jams.
FANTASTIC TIME SO MANY BAND, S TO SEE BUT THIN LIZZY WHERE THE ONE FOR ME 😮😊
Least he was recognised in the top 100 Drummers in Rolling Stones Survey number 82 my opinion he should have been in the top 10!!!!
The three drummers at that time were all jazz/swing prog drummers. Ian paice, cozy powell, and my favorite Brian(the man)Downey. Those three drummers(legends)were the reason i started playing in the first place. These gentlemen are true players. My hats off to them...rock on!
You missed one very important jazz drummer - Charlie Watts. 🥁
Downey is up there with the best of them, seen him do this several times, stunning!!
One of the best bands of all time. underrated.
What a performance on drums - Mr Brian Downey I salute you. Masterpiece
This album and UFO strangers in the night.. Best live hard rock albums!!! Both bands shoulda been huge
You're right on both counts bill. I saw these at Wembley in 78, still the best gig I ever went to. My first big gig... UFO , stunning too, if I'd only seen then with schenker... The two best live rock albums bar none.
that drum solo is truely astounding! so consistent and a delight to watch
Best live record of all time!
Unseen here is the incredible foot work. Great drummer.
One of the best live bands ever
Holt shit,Brian is amazing
What an underrated band! not just the drummer, look at the bassist guitarists and the whole band.... just plain amazing
Unfortunately underrated
They had the chops!
With Phil on bass and lyrics, Brian Downey on the skins and Scott and fellow axe man Brian Robertson on guitars was Lizzy at their very best.
Brilliant Downey's drum solo is awesome. This line up was the best.
exactly
Your dad is bang on. I saw them on their farewell tour in '83 at Hammersmith Odeon. All the old guitarists were there. As a 16 year old and a fan of Lizzy for 7 years by then I can't explain what it felt like to see Phil in the flesh. I couldn't move. Still my favourite band of all time.
BEST DRUM SOLO EVER I THINK . . .FANTASTIC . .
Damn, I forgot how GREAT this band was. Every song is a masterpiece. :-)
The world will never see a good drumer like that for a while!
the first verse of this song = lyrical bliss, vocalist supremist....this is THE GREATEST THIN LIZZY line-up and if you think otherwise you must be out of your mind!!!!
Yes. Listen to his chops on The Rocker on the live and dangerous album.
Yes absolutely it’s very syncopated technical and funky. The great Brian Downey!
Amazing drum solo
true straight goin, u have to love the flanger...
What an awsome guitar duo!!
Thin Lizzy was so underrated at their time, it's a shame.
The Live and Dangerous Double Album is a milestone in REAL music. (!!!)
Absolutly a kind of it's own, this album is heckin' LEGEND !
Respect to you mate, they will always be the best live band i ever saw, Phil had so much stage presence, happy days indeed.
thin lizzy should be with us in these dark days of bs music..
100% pure rock from the soul 2 the heart..
PRICELESS
Yep, technically superb!!!
This is quite possibly the greatest 4 piece band in their prime of all time this stage of their careers.
Man, he FLOWS over those drums!
A great description Sean, just like an Octopuss
This is Thin Lizzy at their prime..Great stuff...
Recently met Brian at Nells in west Kensington. Wow what a gig it was too. As a drummer myself ive always loved Brians drumming. I remember seeing this kit for sale in Rhythm magazine for sale many years ago. Wish i could have bought it.

Brian Downey is a quite underatted drummer i think he should be up there with Bonham , Paice, Ward Etc
one o the greatest rock bands ever if not the best
Give's me the shiver's EVERY time, absolutely stunning!!!!!!!!
go on Downey!!!!!!!!wat a drum solo he looks so laid back haha
Im german as well and live in USA! Phil and Lizzy have influenced me in my Life an songwriting !
Long live Brian!!! Such a legend!
Brian was playing double bass drums too, altogether one of the most under-rated, if not the most under-rated drummers in rock...
Not underrated, _understated._ He did a lot behind the scenes to keep Lizzy going. He was initially going to join _Grand Slam,_ but backed out, saying he didn't want to be in a second rate Thin Lizzy.
@thecouls I remember when I saw the show in Sweden on the same Tour.

this is the song that made me want to play drums in the first place!
Awesome instrumental drums and the bass are my favorites os this.
Brian Downey rocks on drums...watch him go mentle on those cage like drums! wheres the energy and skill come from!!!? wish i could play like THAT! keep watchin for the real long drum solo at the end
yes!! the drummer is the best!!
you couldn't be more right! Brian Downy was looked up to by many top drummers of today.
Best rock drummer ever.Just go away dont even respond. Thanks
Agreed
i seriously jizzed listening to scott play his solo from 1:50-2:00. god he is my favorite guitarist ever, long live lizzy
@thecouls Most big bands of today like Iron maiden and Motorhead look up to Thin lizzy, and they solomly miss them. Most Metal fans fail to appreciate this!

This is about five years before Maidens first LP
Give me a time machine...I Wana just go back there! ♦️♣️♠️♥️🎸🎶
What a brilliant band everybody is was super talented 😮😮❤❤ RIP Phil 🙏 🪦
St Phil is the reason why i play bass. Awesome, timeless band 🖤🤘🤘🤘
WOW! I found this because I love the Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "Walking in the Moonlight", but the guitar and drum work on this track are amazing! May have to listen to Thin Lizzy more often!
The" man at the back". Epic.
Brilliant song to dance to and a wonderful video as wel.
Phil was great but the twin Guitars of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson along with drummer Brian Downey made that band the best!!
Phil Lynott is cool, great bassplayer, great songwriter, greatgreatgreat singer and immensely good-looking too!
@apachestar Thanks for your backup apachestar, The who with Keith Moon were a bit like cream, when it worked it sounded great, but it didnt work very often, drummers are there for a reason, to hold it all together. The fact he never used a hi-hat says it all.
Unbelievable drum solo! The great Brian Downey!
Brian Downey, a true drum legend.
This song is very real to me--Spectrum 1976
Amazing the stamina Brian had..keeping both his feet playing double bass almost throughout the entire solo.
Brian Downey on drums......................he is shit hot
best band ever
The Legend 🤟🏻
Show me one drummer who hasn't borrowed bits and pieces from those who influenced them and took it and put it together and made it his own!!!
wow, this is the first drum solo i have ever seen that has been even close to as good as Neil Perts drum solos :P
Saw then in 1978 or 9 newcastle city hall.. Phil got out of a ford granada estate to sign autographs and i couldnt get near him.. 😉
Yesssss!
The most ive seen robbo actually playing in a video, usually its scott.
