Getting any rank is acquired by getting enough points in the level. You can get either a D, C, B, A, or S Rank based on your performance at the end. Getting to B isn't too difficult if you're aiming for most of the collectibles in a level, but if you want to hit S rank you will have to pull up some leg work.
To get a P Rank in a level, it is expected that you do the following things within one run of any level:
Kill an enemy before leaving the first room
Get enough points for an S Rank
Find all toppins
Find all secrets
Get the secret treasure
Go through the Lap 2 portal
Never drop your combo once

Some tips for fighting Pepperman:
•His attack pattern's predictable. He always goes Shoulder Bash > Turncharge > Ground Pound > Slambounce > Distract. It changes every 2 HP you take off him.
•Focus more on moving away than parrying, especially in phase 2. GP and SB target you, and you don't wanna put yourself in a bad place.
•Stay calm. The more you panic, the more likely you are to get sandwiched.
•When dealing with small Pepperman, aim to hit him in the air as he's trying to jump away. It'll save you time.
•The statues take 3 hits to form in phase 1 and 6 in phase 2. Don't rush your art, like any respectable artist.

Also: If you hug either wall, Pepperman bumps into the wall before being able to turn, in case you have trouble dodging the second charge
