The vstrom is the my favourite adventure bike looks wise.

So funny how people talk straight away about the VStroms looks when it's got some of the best scores on things that really matter like motor, handling, suspension, brakes, ABS, traction control, comfort and value for money. It's also wrong to use the "Jack of all trades" criticism to suggest that it doesn't do anything well, it's actually the opposite. It does a lot of things really well. Like Ryan says you just need to bring the skill and the bike will cover you. I used to own a white 2011 650 for 8 years, went everywhere including 2 up, plus it was my everyday traffic battling commuter bike. Now I own a black 2018 1000 XT. Amazing machine, absolute beast but total cruiser too. The traction control allows you to take it off road with total confidence, I don't understand why people get all macho and want it off. It makes off road much easier with no wheel spins which is a good thing and safer especially given it's larger size. Sure, if I had a light dirt bike I would get it sideways but it's just not a good idea with a bigger bike like these, so traction control off road is totally useful. People love to down play VStroms for no good reasons, it's a weird bias. Shame, they are legendary bikes.

How did it do on 2 up long distance?
People seem to think that overall about suzuki bikes. Not just the V-strom. I can tell you what suzuki does better than anyone else; gearboxes. Now, i haven’t ridden every brand out there but out of bmw GS, ktm 950, ducati monster, and a couple of suzukis, the suzukis have always had the smoothest but yet most tactile feel to the shifting. Hell, bmw gs can barely get into neutral
I find it strange how people focus on the look of the two suzuki vstoms- Having sold my red/silver bmw R1200 GS for a 2019 vstrom 650XP i wouldn't view the high-beaked look as very different between it and the Suzuki....But I rarely hear commentators raise an issue about the bmw's looks...
I own a 2004 Vstrom 1000 and it still kicks major butt. Rock solid performance and goes just about anywhere I've dared to take it. It was super cool to find out you rode one.
This guy puts a lot of effort and research into his stuff.

i find it amazing that he goes/rides to the end of the world to show the capabilites of an ADV-bike. more than fair reviews with a personal touch.. maybe that's why there are only 38 dislikes...
Killer bikes. Just sold my 2003 after 14 happy years and about 95k miles riding it (didn't get out as much as I should have). Been riding since about 1961 and have never had so much bike for so little money.
When you started up that engine, first thing I thought was that it was the bike that you rev'ed for the intro!

The 2004 version looks much better.
I had an 02 until 2010. Loved this bike as a commuter. Comes out of a light in a hurry and so much fun in the turns. Great bike.

Agreed on both counts. I'm starting to think about my next bike and the V-Strom is near the top of the list, and I think the 650 is what I'd want. I have a friend who just traded his 1000 for a 650 and likes the 650 better.

Road Warrior not really about power. The 1000 has slipper clutch, lean angle ABS, much better calipers, hydraulic clutch, adjustable screen, AND all that power. So ya it’s the 1000 for me.

To all owners of DL1000, get the Clutch done ✔️ My was 2mm play on 48.000km, and now it's unbelievable smooth 1st gear is like from day 1. Unbelievable motorcycle 🏍.

one of my choices when I changed my bike 12 months ago, I loved it but the bike shop I was dealing with at the time wouldn't do a decent part ex, I ended up with an explorer which I also love, nice review.
Nice vid. I did have higher expectations of the bike but it's nice to see an honest review.
People misunderstand the new Vstrom 1000 and I think that's why it has poor sales. It's not a GS, not a Super Tenere, KTM or Africa Twin. This is the ADV bike for the guy who doesn't want to spend much time off-road or on anything beyond groomed fire roads. It's got great suspension and brakes, good geometry, traction, and handling for road use. It's the sport bike of Adv bikes. I'm pretty sure it even has a slipper clutch! It's like a Porsche Cayenne to other SUV's, but opposite on the price scale. I kinda wish it was shaft drive, but chain keeps the bike light and quick. If you want more of a dirt tank get the Yamaha. I have an FJR1300 and the updated 2018 Vstrom 1000 is on my radar. First Japanese Adv bike to have Bosch cornering ABS! To me the Vstrom 1000 is a modern UJM. Just a good all around bike that makes as few sacrifices as possible for a good balance of comfort, practicality, and fun.

Oh, lovely. I always liked the V-Strom, even since the the first version.. but always somehow figured I'd be happier with a Bandit 1250 since I never go off road. I'd love to see you compare those 2 bikes on road. Seems like I'd enjoy the torque and smoothness of the Bandit more.. but again, I love twins too! Sheesh. Love your vids, keep it up.
I love the Strom, but reckon the Hayabusa would be a better choice to go fast since I don't need an ADV bike.

I own a 2018xt and have road the tracer gt . The Tracer is a nice street bike but vstrom is better everywhere. I also have a 2013 FJR 1300 and it's a lot better than the tracer. The only problem with the FJR its heavy . But for the money and dependability the Vstrom and the Fjr are hard to beat.
3 years on mine. I tried GS's and AT's but the storm makes me happy. One day I'm going to make that front nose pretty but I don't know how. - lol. Like someone said it is better looking in person- I get compliments all the time.

Hey Ryan, always love your vlogs mate and I know this one is real old but wondered did you ever bother switching out the tyres if you were planning a trip without any trails? Do you think this bikes performance on road with the knobblies would be significantly improved with road tyres or not worth switching out?
I m on my third Vstrom since 2008. Outstanding bike . It never left me stranded and I ride year round. I live in New Jersey. If you want to ride off-road buy a 650. I ve rode my 650 in dirt rocks and sand. It will go where ever a BMW gs will go. I use my 1000 more for touring .
Got one. 95,000km and counting. Great bike. Nothing wrong with the looks. I love pulling up next to GS riders, complete with their Ewan/Charlie costumes and accessories, and see them look down their nose at the "peasant " on his cheap Suzuki. What a shame I can't see their reaction as i leave them in my dust haha
How do you set up or use for a helmet MIC?

Ryan, would you rather take a DL650 or a DL1000 overall? Considering the strengths and weakness of both?
I think it looks good, rides well, cheap to insure and run circa 55mpg, the engine is a peach, brakes are from the GSXR thou. An adventure bike isn't about revving it out you want the torque low down and punch. Totally eclipses the Gen 1 I had and the secondhand prices are good and have held their value after they initially plummeted. Nice off road riding btw!
It's got another 10 hp and about 10 ft-lb torque after a -15 pound full exhaust and appropriate tuning at sea level. There are other ways to bring the bike to about 490 pounds wet (battery, etc).
Got the 2016 version of this bike in February 2017. Have about 4,300 km already. No regrets.

I drive that road every day - ride it on my cb5x in season and it’s a blast. Having ridden both, how would you compare the big Vee and the outgoing Africa Twin for those roads, Ryan? I know you’ve moved on the BC and BMW, but I’d appreciate your opinion.
I have a 2004 650 Vstrom (1st gen) and life begins at 5k, with 6k being the rpm baseline for sporty riding. Screams right up past 10k when the limiter stutters at you. At full throttle around 9k the front end suddenly comes flying up, which has caught me off guard a time or two!

Good question! I don't think it's a privacy thing... the most anyone could get from knowing my license plate number is the make and model of my vehicle. Which - as the title of this video suggests - is no secret. Of course there is a bunch of other info about me attached to this plate. My date of birth, address, etc. But you'd need to be some kind of SAAQ official to see that. So again, not much of a privacy risk. I think the reason most motovloggers blur their license plates is because they're worried that a cop might see and be able to give them a ticket based on what they did in the video. But I try not to drive like an idiot in motovlogs, so I doubt that'll happen to me. Fingers crossed ;) ~RyanF9
Have you ever been able to compare the litre v-strom to the 650? I have the 2012 650 and although not enough for 2 up is also a good compromise but at an even lower price. Looks better too.

I loved that engine in the '98 TL1000S, so disappointed they just kept making it softer and then only used it in "adventure" models. The GSX-S1000 is more or less what I'm after from Suzuki, but I'm more of a V-Twin fan. Really I just want a TL1300S (probably end up getting a used Super Duke, although I'm not convinced about KTM's reliability and dealer network).

Niceone fella. The vstrom was on my list when I was shopping but I ended up with the MT 09 Tracer, think mainly because on my Yamaha loyalty, lol. Think vstrom looks ok, I know you mention your not keen on it, kinda see what your getting at. I reckon though from the cockpit view, it looks awesome. Can't wait for you to have a bash on the tracer and see what you think. I know it's more classed as a sport/tourer rather than a adv, but if I put nobbley tyres on it'd probably keep up with ya, lol. Great skills you have though, mine are limited. Did a bit of mx in my younger days but not much. Look forward to seeing the full review fella.

Doticaster Yamaha and Kawasaki are way better in term of styling
I'm really considering getting rid of my Harley Dyna for this bike. I have an 01 FXDX. It's not your traditional Harley. 13" adjustable suspension, takes turns great, dual disk brakes upfront. Overall fun bike, but its 670lbs and I have to mod it pretty damn heavily just to get it where it needs to be for comfort and power, yet I still can't go offroad like I'd want to, and the 5 gears kind of dampens the touring aspect. I've been looking at the Vstrom 1000's for a while now. Even the older models like 07-14 look great. Everyone seems to absolutely love these bikes. I love my Harley but it's missing a lot. I want something more versatile that I'm not afraid to get dirty or scratch. I can pretty much trade the Dyna even up with a newer Vstrom. Gonna do some test rides here soon. Just can't shake this want for the Suzuki.

Maybe I missed a video. You are riding the BMW a lot now in videos. You get rid of the Suzuki? And is there a video about why you went with the BMW versus not another Suzuki or another brand?
Nice review! What would u pick for just street riding this bike or the Versys 1000? I’ve narrowed it down to those 2 bikes. I’ve only had sport bikes, time for a cruiser. Thanks for any info! 👍

The platform would make a great trail-biased, Africa Twin competitor, ADV bike with relatively minor changes. Bigger wheels, more travel-height in the suspension, etc. Call it a VR-Big =)
Great motor and good handling but as you mention its not pretty. Until they redesign the look it wont sell like a GS but it deserves to do well as the Suzuki is a good reliable bike and great value.

I actually like the way it looks. I even like the older 1st gen Vstrom 650s & 1000s. In the eye of the beholder I guess.
I had an 05 vstrom 1000 a few years ago. I figured if my 650 was great. The 1000 would be amazing. I was kinda right. That thing was a monster. Sooooo much torque!! My big problem with that bike was the hydro clutch. It was on or off. With that much torque. I had to be careful. I know that sounds stupid, but that was no joke. One mistake with the clutch would F you up in the canyons.

@ FortNine - Owned a VStrom1000 (03) best bike I ever owned. I also owned a KTM950ADV. The V-strom was one of the best rd bikes I ever rode (riding windy/curvy roads hard against R1s etc), Great Touring, raced it, commuted on it, HOWEVER, off-road it was a handful (Not on hard-packed dirt, or gravel, just soft sand etc). The KTM950ADV was a big dirtbike, just amazing off-road, but I never cared for it on a spirited ride on a windy/curvy road. I currently own a DR650. I'm thinking of looking at an Africa Twin. How would the AT compete with the KTM and VStrom??? - Oh I'm probably looking at a 2017 AT. Love to hear your thoughts.
Nice bike, but not a fan of the Beak. I know Suzuki states that their 1980s "Dr. Big" had a beak before BMW began using it, but I personally don't care for that look. I prefer the appearance of my standard 2013 white 650 Vstrom, although the 650 on freeways and interstates leaves something to be desired. Nice informative video.
Please do the DL650! Even better, do the original one (2004 onwards), they are the Klashnekoff of adventure bikes 👌🙏

Hi Ryan, you must be a taller than I am, (5'10) as the buffeting from that windscreen felt like going rounds w Mike Tyson. I complained in so many blogs, Suzuki Canada invited me in to discuss the issue w the two Japanese engineers. (They also gave me the touring screen for my troubles). As you mentioned, the bike really shines on the paved twisties. Even w two up, my wife and I are always leading our group rides, and often waiting on the cruisers and even most sport bike riders. I also have an after market skid plate, and the ground clearance scares me. With two of us on, I am hitting dirt and rocks way too often for my comfort level. (Putting the wife on a diet was not an option)!. Rather than cross reference my purchase with other adv touring bikes, I now realize I should have tried sport touring bikes, perhaps the KT 13000 BMW would have been a better fit w the type of riding we do. But, as you said, not a bad bike at all....

Yep, I'm 6'3. I've heard a lot of people mention the buffeting issue on our Stroms, but I've never noticed it myself! Must be in some kind of sweet spot. Ever tried an S1000XR? That'd probably be my first choice if I were to go more road-oriented than the V-Strom. What a machine! ~RyanF9
DUDE THAT FACTORY WINDSCREEN SUCKS SO MUCH SHIT. It was brutal for me, I got a Givi upgraded one and its way better. Mirror stand offs help too. I am not 100% happy with the $100 givi windscreen, I am gonna try the $200 Givi "airflow" screen and see how it was.
What do you think about the new baby 250 V-Strom?
I'm not convinced... looks like it shares too much DNA with the GW250 to be a passable "adventure" bike. Now that I think of it, the new baby adventure class, which has exploded at EICMA, doesn't make much sense in general. At that capacity, why weigh the bike down with a bunch of touring kit? Might as well be on a proper dual-sport at that point. Not to mention that - since these bikes are targeted at beginners - they'd have a much easier time learning off-road skills on something like a CRF250L. ~RyanF9

I am routinely around 20-21 km/L, but I am a fairly cautious rider and like to short shift.
Hi, I like your blogs. I believe that Suzuki took the outlook for the new V Strom from DR 800 which was made 1988 for the Dakar rally. Actually, I believe that BMW took that shape for its GS series. Well, you've kind of convinced me that I don't want one of these. I had heard from am owner that it was absolutely smooth like an electric engine. I ride a KLR 650 right now and you would think it should be smoother then that, it is going down in cylinder bore per cylinder. You ride both so, is it smoother power pulses then the KLR?
I traded a 2017 KLR 650 for a 2018 1000 vstrom xt yellow. If I only road by myself I got along good on the KLR. But I have to ride 2 up occasionally . It's a lot easier on the vstrom. And I love the extra power.

You have to shift the vstrom. A little less than the KLR. It runs best above 3000 rpms. I don't lug it like my 1300 FJR yamaha . It can pull away from 30mph in 5th gear without a problem. You don't do that on the Vstrom. One of the nice things about the Vstrom is the lack of engine heat. Not much more than the KLR as long as you keep rolling. I run highway pegs on all my bikes that , let's me stretch the old knee's. And it keeps your legs away from the heat. All in all the Vstrom is one of my all time favorite motorcycle's. I'm always shopping for a new motorcycle but I just don't see anything that
Is close to the value and dependability of My 1000 vstrom xt. Yes it's way smoother than the KLR. And if you get in a hurry the Vstrom can run at 80+ all day long with ease.
What windscreen is that?
I have one myself.. Sure it isn't the best at everything... But for the price, its a winner all around for me. I should do a video review on my channel. I've had mine for over a year.
Just a suggestion, I guess Ninja 1000 is a better all rounder.
Covered 12,000 miles on my vstrom. Only thing I don't like about it is the fuelling, especially in second gear it really struggles to pull from low down. Also the panniers are way too small.
Try a BoosterPlug.
Needs cruise, but great handling bike for the money. They added heated grips this year.
I had a 2014 it was a great bike but build quality and clutch issues turned me off.
Hey Ryan I agree with you about 99% of the time, and I end up buying most of the stuff you recommend. Here are 2 things where I disagree. 1. the V-strom is a GREAT looking bike, but then again people think my DRZ is fugly, but they're asses. 2. I bought some of those FIVE gloves you rave about - great quality but the design of their palm sliders rubs on a very sensitive part of most people's hands - according to the ball and chain who is a physiologist. After a short time in traffic with a lot of clutching, my left hand is wracked with tendonitis type pain. Maybe they'll break in - I hope so as I bought 5 pairs cause they were on closeout for $20 each.
By the way, these things sound fantastic with a Yoshimura can on the exhaust. Ducati-like.
Idk if anyone noticed or not but the fortnine intro sound, sounds too much like this vstrom starting up, maybe they added it because maybe it was ryan’s bike or it was the only bike they could sample a sound like thag out of at the time?? And in reviewing literally every super adv bike (despite I might say the videos about the GS) ryan has said “best on road handling adv bike ever” about EVERY other super adv bike he reviews

Great review of a solid bike. Sold my 2011 Wee last fall. Terrific bike, especially in it's RPM sweet spot in the hills & curves. It's light weight was the key to the high fun factor in the mountains and gravel roads. Rock solid dependable too. In the end though, for 90% of my riding, around town/close to home, it was a bit boring.

@fortnine what ryan, do you know, or have experience with the dreaded "clutch chudder" that seems to plague these bikes as the odometer climes? Apparently even the '14+ with the supposed redesign clutch assemblies are supposedly susceptible to this. Any personal knowledge or experiance would be helpful. I guess im trying to say i trust you man

I know this is an old post but isn't the V STROM a TL1000R engine detuned for off road:) I ride a VTR1000F FIRESTORM and understand the Honda XL1000V Varadero has a VTR 1000F engine also de tuned. I would love to ride your bike or the Honda equivalent:) I have been stuck in traffic and dreamed of cutting over the fields to get home lol:)

These bikes run 11's in the 1/4 mile....That's pretty fucking FAST in my book, especially for an Enduro bike. Yeah, once you put knob tires on and Hard cases, it's gonna slow down A lot.....but stock, these bikes are quick.
