Eric and The Band’s Richard Manuel used to drink heavily together during the making of this album. Some good tunes on that record.

Well, I took the opportunity to listen to the album, and I thought "All Our Past Times" really popped out. Same for "Double Trouble" which would have been right at home on "From the Cradle" album except he is younger and it has the fire of youth rather than the smoldering of experience. "Innocent Times" hit the spot too, I love how EC was always so ready to share the spotlight.
But definitely, when one thinks about what other musical trends were happening back in the mid '70's it does seem an album like this, which might have gone to the top of the charts just 5 years earlier would only hit #15; it was competing with Boston, Hotel California, Frampton Comes Alive, Year of the Cat...even George Harrison's 33&1/3 made it to #11.
BUT AS ALWAYS...thanks so much for getting me listening to some more good music that I missed the first time around. I always liked Clapton, but I was just a broke teenager back then. And now that I've got some spare cash, it's all free to listen to. How the world turns. Makes me feel sorry for musicians who are trying to make a buck these days.
I think tonight I might pull out a bottle myself and join the band in the picture at least in spirit and give this thing another spin. Here's to you!

Sadly, album popularity is often times measured by the popularity of the singles from the album. This album is an example of why that does a great disservice to an otherwise solid album. The two singles, "Hello Old Friend" and "Carnival", were wonderful recordings, but not commercial enough to match the success of "I Shot The Sheriff". There are only two tracks I skip when I listen to this album: "All Our Pastimes" and "Innocent Times".

I never listened to this record from start to finish. But I just put it my list. Thanks for another great review.

ive listen to your review john and gave the album a couple of spins as i have played it for a long time one thing for me what lets the album done is that female singer popping up on some of the tracks especially on side 2 other than that a fine low key clapton album

Funny timing aha. Saw this one going for cheap in a record store earlier in Hertfordshire. Perhaps I should've picked it up.

Thanks for the review.I agree with your comment about same old blues. It was certainly not his best. I disagree though with you on Double Trouble I think it is a great blues song although better on the live album just one night and on the live album he did with Steview so wood recorded at Madison Square Garden. However there are some great versions from the 1995 tour which include a horn section which is what the song needs

Sorry John heaton, but get your coughing out the way before you attempt another review. Not a great noise through my speakers, but I do like respect your opinion on all things clapton and beatles. 😉
