Warm and beautiful is one of McCartney’s most beautiful songs ever. And Silly love songs is his best solo track together with Maybe I’m amazed. As for Let them in, it is pure joy. A classic rock/pop album released when disco was on the rise.
John, I have been a massive Beatles fan for years and always wrote off the solo efforts without giving them a chance.....until I started watching your reviews. It’s been amazing getting to know the solo years as it has been like discovering new Beatles music that I have never heard before. Thank you so much
Hi that's just like me. I really didn't explore their solo stuff enough, especially George, and John has really opened my eyes and ears and I'm enjoying so much great music.
Phil Turner ☺️☺️ nice one Phil. What’s been your favourite discovery? Personally I love red rose speedway and in particular, little lamb/Dragonfly! I can’t stop telling people about it!!😂😂
Maybe it’s not necessary to get into comparisons, but I can’t help but feel McCartney was by far the best of the Beatles. Don’t get me wrong, George and John still have some good solo stuff, but I’m happy they broke up and Paul was able to fully indulge his instincts solo afterwards and then with Wings. I’d go so far as to say some of McCartney’s stuff challenges a lot of the Beatles catalogue, particularly on Ram. At the Speed of Sound isn’t on that level, but I think this one is another slightly underrated one.
Great review John. Love this album. ''The Note You Never Wrote'', ''Beware My Love'', and ''Must Do Something About It'' are my favorites on this Wings album.
Hi, good to see you, this LP contains two brilliant classics of Paul's songwriting such as Let ‘em in and Silly love songs, which I initially discovered on “all the best ” Paul's anthology. I bought this album at age 17 on CD, and I have a contrasting relationship, modified over the years, several songs are a little depressing but I find that this adds depth at times. Sometimes simply lacks brilliance, but I prefer Wings production to Paul's material from the early 1980s
Thank you. I bought this album the day it was released but never really liked it at the time. This might have been due to peer pressure from a group of friends who were on the heavier side. However, listening to it again today and I’m knocked out by it. A series of great tracks rediscovered.
My first Wings album bought it with my birthday money when I was 13 cycled 5 miles to get it , personally I love the cover, fave tracks are Silly love songs, Beware my love and of course Let em in.. so simple but so effective, by the way it's lyrics include Phil and Don obviously the Everly,s. Keep doing the reviews John, love em.
Strange...when I first bought this album, unheard, I disliked it so much that I returned it. Some time later, I picked the vinyl up second had, simply as a bit of completism. However, I then grew to love it. I agree with John's assessment totally. P.S. I think that thre reason people me included, didn't like this album was that Paul didn't sing all the songs. What we all missed was that this was not a Paul Mc. album but a Wings album. Nobody complained that Paul didn't sing all the Beatles songs. Now I'm not comparing Wings to the Beatles but none the less Wings is just as much a band.
Great album with a string of strong songs, performed by a powerful Wings band furthermore at it's comercial peak......Time to Hide is Denny Laine at his very best and the highest note on this great album which certainly stand the test of time.....
Marvellous review John. I have the remastered vinyl and actually prefer the album to Venus & Mars. Favourite songs are Silly Love Songs, Beware My Love and Winko Junko. I may get the box set now I have seen yours!! I think the album is unjustly criticised in some quarters, good to hear you fighting its corner.
Hi John this album so many special memories for me my first Paul album then Red & Blue also remember 76 Olympics being a year older than you but enough of me. Speed Of Sound the middle of the great five Wings albums Paul's bass playing superb all the way through Silly Love Songs perfection. Warm & Beautiful great vocal it works having all band members providing vocals, Denny at his best. She's My Baby a funky sound, you are spot on about the polished sound.
Joe English went to become a born again Christian & made a few albums in the 80s. I had his first album "Lights in the World" which was quite good- kind of Steely Dan/doobie bros style. I saw the Wings over America tour. Wasn't a huge fan at the time but walked away with a new respect for the group. Good review
Another enjoyable review John. Spot on from my perspective. "Let em in" and "Warm and Beautiful" my faves as well. And, "Seaside Woman" would have definitely fit in nicely on this album. Aaah, this album brings back nice memories of the summer of '76. Constantly heard "Silly" and "Let em in" on the radio that summer. Wings was a much maligned group by the critics back then but it you look at what they did from '73 to '79 some really solid pop/rock albums as well as non-album singles. I know you don't like compilations but I really wish the compilation Wingspan would have done justice to their great work and dug deep into their catalogue. Any chance you might do a review of the non-released collection of Wings songs for the Cold Cuts project? Anyway, keep 'em coming.
Thanks mate. It's funny 'cos I didn't discover this album until around 1979 but I do remember the hot summer of '76 but that was before I got into music...have a couple of sporting memories: Lasse Viren at Montreal winning the 5 and 10,000 metres and Dennis Amiss scoring 203 at The Oval!
Thanks John, great review. I've just re-discovered this LP after dismissing it previously. Always loved the singles but there are numerous great tracks on here She's My Baby and Beware My Love. Still don't like Cook of the House a but still overall a record not to be overlooked.
Bought when it was released, as was my habit with all solo Beatles releases apart from most of Ringo's. For me, Silly Love Songs dragged on in places and cried out for an ending. Let 'em In, infectious melody and homely lyrics. Beware My Love, The Note You Never Wrote and Wino Jungo all excellent.
Love that T-shirt!...I agree with your points on this album, especially about the excellent production, and sound, and the way the other members of Wings vocals actually enhance the record overall...Interesting to hear about the name "San Ferry Anne" (I'd love to have the box set, I just can't afford them) - the song does have a Parisian feel - never thought about it that way though. - Great review of an often disparaged album..
Thanks Thomas. I will admit I got the box set when it was knocked down to 10,000 Forints (25 GBP) in my local record store here in Hungary. I think in general they are way over-priced. The T shirt is four pictures of each Beatle's first solo album drawn on his phone using some drawing application. Thanks for noticing :- )
Hi John, I'm new to your channel but have really enjoyed your videos. I would rank this album in his top 5 solo work which I think you did too in your McCartney album rankings. You and I are apparently the minority however based on other videos I've watched. Besides Cook of the House, I just think this album is great from start to finish with the different variety it offers but no one else seems to think so. I swear it's that awful cover that turns people off
Hi John I'm late to the party!!! Great tee your son did.... very cool, I love this album yes Beware my Love is a fav of mine to. Love "time to hide "too, I think I'll go have a listen now-- again thanks for the wonderful review--Lis
Very good review john. I think i've told you i was there in Los Angeles at the 76 show and yes the horns played a major part. Best concert i've ever been too. They did 4 songs from this album, just great. Anyway yes this album gets a bad rap but i like it. Don't care to much for cook of the house but he wanted everyone to have a song. One thing, i could never understand why they did this song on the 79 tour, but oh well. Beware my love, the note you never wrote, time to hide and wino junko are stand outs for me. Great songs. All in all a good album. Still like venus and mars a bit better. Thanks for review john
Thanks a lot. If I had a Tardis I would go back to that show in LA in '76 for sure. The one where Ringo comes on with some flowers preferably. Wish the 79 tour would be released, at least on audio. Don't think they filmed much of it (Kampuchea but just the songs on the record or the whole concert?) On October 20 when Flowers In The Dirt comes out we will know what's coming next in the archive releases. I am praying it's London Town & Back To The Egg.
Talking to Laurence Juber a year or two back he said the whole of the Wings Kampuchea show was filmed, but the set was slightly truncated because of the Rockestra ending!
Yes he told a good friend of mine who lived not to far from him the same thing. I have whole show on cd. But paul is very unhappy through the whole show.
Hi John, listening to all the Wings albums again recently. It just goes to show that Wings were a truly tremendous band. I can't believe that people knock and dismiss them. Speed of sound possibly may have overtaken Back to the egg as my all time favourite wings lp, how about that. although that may change when I listen to BTTE again, lol. Skype soon mate.
Good to hear. And I agree completely of course. As for this album, it is a very warm album and rich in mood and melody. I think Wings were at their peak with this and the next two but I am sure Venus & Mars afficianados will disagree :- )
Hi john. Cool video giving us a good look into this album. I have always enjoyed this album but I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites from Paul. My favourite track would be beware my love and would probably give the album a high six or low seven out of ten. Cool video again mate and take care
I've always liked this album although I disagree about the cover design, it's just a marquee. I find 'Let 'Em In' boring. 'She's My Baby' isn't a classic but it's well sung by Paul. 'Silly Love Songs' is brilliant, the way he combines 3 choruses all at once. 'Cook of the House' suffers from being mostly on 1 note, not a lot of range and Linda is not closely miked. I do like that we got 'Sally G' as a bonus track on the original CD.
I'm just going to say it. I think Paul's greatest works post Beatles-have resulted when he's been in charge and bossed around everyone in site be it group members or session musicians (Ram, Band on the Run). That's why I always think Wings at the Speed of Sound suffers, especially the other team members contributions on side 2 (for example Cook of the House which is too lightweight for inclusion and Time to Hide which would sit better on a Denny Laine solo album). I prefer Venus and Mars taken as an entire work, although Paul's wonderworks on Speed of Sound are greater than anything on V&M (Let Em In, Silly Love Songs and somewhere close Beware My Love). You could do an EP from Speed of Sound (adding Warm and Beautiful to the three aforementioned) which would stand up well against much Beatles work, but the rest is not compelling.
Agree re Cook Henry. But 'Time To Hide' is a little gem especially with McCartney's bass and vocals...even better on Wings Over America. Revusit The Note also...dark, atmospheric and superbly played. I hate EPs anyway :- )
Well agreed on the Note. And agreed on the Wings over America take. All very agreeable! Right now must watch your Please Please Me review. Keep em coming John Heaton!!
Haha....that's a terrific idea, John. I actually feel badly with my negativity toward McCartney's solo work. You'd never know I've been a Beatle fanatic from the beginning.....the greatest band ever in my opinion. I guess that, even in my advanced age, I need to hear more punch more often as opposed to all those silly love songs of his. But as I keep repeating, that's just me. Obviously, I'm in the distinct minority here and I respect all those who vociferously disagree. That is the beauty of music. By the way, I'm fascinated with all the various locations you use for your reviews. You are a man on the run as opposed to a band on the run! But no matter where you may be, your reviews are always interesting and revelatory. Keep up the terrific work.
Economic Inflation Kills Music. As well as All aspects of life. Especially in 1976 and now in 2023. Uneven album, like Red Rose Speedway. Half of it is Masterful, the other half is Gas Guzzling indulgence. I prefer Chaos and Memory to be honest. What i really prefer is Electric Arguments for a more experimental side of McCartney. I like weird stuff. Venus and Band are two albums I'd pull out more than this one. Even Back To the Egg and London Town have more Adventurous stuff than this. It's still OK for me.
Apart from Wild Life Speed Of Sound is Wings weakest effort for me. Like Wild Life, I enjoy the album but overall it's too slick and has too many songs that I'm not keen on that weigh it down.
The first album, along with Wild Life, post-Beatles that I find to be a disappointment. I can cut Wild Life some slack because Paul was trying to do something different, and if Wild Life didn’t come off all that great, that’s ok, I can forgive Paul for at least trying. But this album has too many holes to my liking. Cook of the House and She’s my Baby are very, very weak. Tough to find anything worthwhile in those songs. Wino Junkie and Must do Something About it are mediocre. I’ve got no problem with Denny and Joe doing lead vocals. They both can sing. The rest of the album is a joy. Even the deeper cuts; San Ferry Anne, Warm and Beautiful and The Note You Never Wrote I thoroughly enjoy. Great in parts, but very weak in other parts. Entirely too inconsistent for my liking. A Wings album I rarely listen to.
Not a good album..3/10 Silly Love Songs is a masterpiece.. Even let em in annoys me..it’s like hello goodbye in lyrics.. don’t want wings band democracy…this band is about ONE man..anyone who says otherwise…are they buying Denny’s solo? Jimmys solo? Absolutely not! I love the fact silly love songs Paul is stating true to himself..perhaps a reference to John calling him Englebert..oh how John wishes he could write a song that good at this time!! Cheers John
Great review! I had heard Paul wrote "The Note You Never Wrote" as a message to John Lennon. I agree with you, "Beware My Love" is the strongest song on the album. What label is your copy on?
Thanks! My one is with the half front cover and the two men climbing. I didn't show it as I only took the sleeve down to Balaton for fear of warping. I think I heard that once about 'The Note You Never Wrote'....could be but doesn't sound much like it. If it was a personal message like that he should have sung it himself.
Warm and beautiful is one of McCartney’s most beautiful songs ever. And Silly love songs is his best solo track together with Maybe I’m amazed. As for Let them in, it is pure joy. A classic rock/pop album released when disco was on the rise.

@Madonna Vondoloski eh? What do you mean? What series?
Maybe it’s not necessary to get into comparisons, but I can’t help but feel McCartney was by far the best of the Beatles.

I didn't like it back then. Unfortunately it still sounds mediocre at best. After Band On the Run I kept hoping for even better.

Aaah, Lasse Viren there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. A great distance runner that had a beard from what I remember from those Olympics.
Thanks John, great review. I've just re-discovered this LP after dismissing it previously. Always loved the singles but there are numerous great tracks on here She's My Baby and Beware My Love. Still don't like Cook of the House a but still overall a record not to be overlooked.

Drawn by my son Richie (16) I should say.
Great job Richie.
My very first Paul album. i remember buying it when it first came out. love it.
My first album as well James.

Wino Junko is a great song, my favorite on this album. Quite like Sally G as a bonus track

Silly Love Songs was a response to criticism by John Lennon. I prefer the version of Beware My Love with Bonzo on drums. It has brass.
Hi john. Cool video giving us a good look into this album. I have always enjoyed this album but I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites from Paul. My favourite track would be beware my love and would probably give the album a high six or low seven out of ten. Cool video again mate and take care

Silly Love Songs was a rejoinder to Lennon’s criticism of Paul’s lightweight love songs.

More McCartney marshmallow fluff, but your review is a medium rare T-bone steak, John. Always enjoyable.
Thanks David. Perhaps we write a book. 'McCartney Post Beatles: Melodic Maestro or Shallow Marshmallow' by Heaton & Gena
Haha....that's a terrific idea, John. I actually feel badly with my negativity toward McCartney's solo work. Fine review, John! Referring to your T-shirt, how about reviewing "Sentimental Journey" one of these days? Best wishes!
Thanks Klaus. Yes it's definitely on my list, as is Beaucoups Of Blues!
Thanks, I look forward to it!

Venus and Band are two albums I'd pull out more than this one.

It's still OK for me.
Well, let's get on with it!!!!!! Just kidding of course. Horses for courses. ; - )
Apart from Wild Life Speed Of Sound is Wings weakest effort for me. Like Wild Life, I enjoy the album but overall it's too slick and has too many songs that I'm not keen on that weigh it down.
OK fair enough James. At least we agree on the next two!
Hey John....have you reviewed any of the early Beatles' albums? The first 3? Would like to hear what you have to say about them.
David Gena not yet David but obviously plan to!

Paul McCartney Is The Best 💯
Great review! I had heard Paul wrote "The Note You Never Wrote" as a message to John Lennon. I agree with you, "Beware My Love" is the strongest song on the album. What label is your copy on?
