I wish I saw this sooner! I saw an aloe at home depot that looked pretty bad. There were two in one pot, bending and breaking the pot and so squished. I wanted to bring it home and nurse it back to health but when I went back for it, it was gone. I figured either someone bought it or the store threw it out.
Oh wow, didn't know this...thanks for sharing! ☺ There should be a "rehabilitation clinic" for dying plants instead of just tossing them out...😒 nurse 'em back to health, and find homes for them!
My lucky bamboo has been in water the last three years, the leaves have begun turning that exact pale color yours have, I repotted it in hopes the soil helps my plant baby thrive. Wish me luck ❤️
@@fiveninefour-z8t so it’s been a month since repotting it, and honestly, it seemed like my bamboo was shocked for quite some time and it’s barely getting used to the soil. Made me nervous at first honestly. BUT, finally It does look a lot greener, doesn’t require much watering and is so much healthier than before so I do recommend if you are thinking about it. (:
I received a lucky bamboo some time around 2010. It sat nicely on my desk in a 8oz. container of water. I still have it today! It is over 5ft. tall & is in a 2 gallon container of water. I'm hoping to transfer it to soil without it dying. You're video was very informative & easy to follow. Wish me luck & thank you for your video
I was just changing the water for my lucky bamboo when I thought maybe I should put it in soil. Your video was the first one I saw! Five minutes later im sitting on my porch transplanting them!
Thank you Carmen, this was so helpful. I have a lucky bamboo that is almost 6 years old and has been growing in rocks and water and after I transplanted it to a larger pot last year it has not done well and started turning yellow. I took it out of its pot and discovered its roots smelled stinky. I found a video about using hydrogen peroxide in dilution to clean the roots, and it has gotten better, but it keeps getting stinky again. I am cleaning it one more time and after seeing your video I want to try planting it in soil. Poor thing, its been in rocks and water all this time, I look forward to seeing how it does in soil and with some fertilizer. I've never fertilized it.
yes i plan to transplant my lucky bamboo into another larger pot the pot that it is in is very small i have some fresh compost and i look forward to seeing it grow in another larger pot.
*I WAS LOOKING FOR A VIDEO EXACTLY LIKE THIS!* I had a lucky bamboo that I loved, but it was lost for a variety of reasons... so I wanted to start over. When I got my new shoots home I wondered if I could plant them in dirt knowing bamboo looks like it grows in dirt naturally. Lo and behold this was the first video I came across that answered ALL my questions! So now its in dirt with my fingers crossed that it likes its home. *THANKYOU!!*
I never knew that they were supposed to be in soil till today. I have 3 that have been in water for almost 4 yrs! I started to notice the leaves starting to turn yellow so in researching the reason I now know. I'm transplanting them now! Your video is my guide! I like the fact that you mentioned north window, because my bedroom windows face north! I knew no direct sun but I thought to myself maybe north is to dim! Thank you!
@@carmenwhitehead Also, I forgot to express, I love your tip on adding the colored stones on top, to retain moisture, that's unique! I do have a question? I completed the task yesterday, when it's time to water them am I supposed to water company them until I see water draining into the bottom water catch pan or do I water lightly? Thank you!
Hi..so my neighbor gave me her lucky bamboo plant which is in a large pot with tiny pebble...it started to yellow so I'm going to transfer it to soil...I'm excited...thank you for the great video..😊
Was looking to see if I could transplant bamboo from stones to soil and found your site. So I transplanted some sad roots and will put it in a good spot and see how it transforms. Love your channel!
I have had my Bamboo in water for the past 4-5 years and never any issues with it growing or staying green. About 2 times a year I add about 4 ml. of a light fertilizer to the water and then leave it alone. I do let it dry out about every 3 months and not give it any water for about 1 week, a friend gave me this tip and it works awesome. No need for soil at all :-)
I definitely agree. My mother’s bamboo plant which started off as a propagation had spent its whole life (the last 7 or 8 years) in water and survived beautifully. I moved it to soil a few days ago and I’m a bit nervous, I won’t lie. But yes, bamboo can definitely thrive in water 💕

Thank you so much your video was very helpful and I'm going to take my Lucky bamboo out of water and put it in potting soil . 🙂 I hope you have a great day.
I have a twisted lucky bamboo that has been on my desk in my office at work. It is 28 inches tall, 13 stalks tightly wrapped around a perforated cylinder. The base is 7 " tall, 7" in diameter and the bloom is aprox 27 inches across. I don't know how to figure that in diameter. I have had it for at least a year and it has grown quite a bit since I first got it. The leaves have been turning light like the ones in Carmen's plant. I didn't know if I should prune or even how to do that on this plant. The ends of the leaves are also turning brown. I figured it needed re potting so I brought it home. I also thought it might like some fresh air and natural light instead of stuffy office A/C air and artificial light so I put in my screened porch with my Orchids and some other plants. I am in FL so it is also a bit humid out there right now. I went on line to find out what I needed to do and found Carmen. I am so glad I did. Before I began my search I had pulled it from it's original container, which had very little soil in it, so It has been virtually in water all this time. I believed the plant liked water so I was considering setting it up in a water vase. Carmen's video convinced me to go with soil. Makes perfect sense! Hoping I do this right and that my beautiful lucky bamboo is much happier. I am going to keep her at home in rehab for a while to see if she bounces back. I am the brown thumb in my family of gardening grand parents (3 of the 4 were gardeners) and my sister has a horticulture degree and a gardening business! That's ok though because I am a gifted horse and dog trainer :) But I LOVE my plants! I just realized I am on my Son's Google account. That is not my profile, LOL. I am Sherry
I have 2 stalks of lucky bamboo that have grown to over 5ft. tall... I've had them for over 8 years, always in water. Lately, they haven't been their very best, and I suspect its because of the long term water. I'd like to transfer them to soil, but I'm just so afraid! Thank you for the video... it gives me courage to make the move.
Hi Carmen , you give me life.....I potted my lucky bamboo because I just wanted to see if it will grow in dirt and I keep my lucky bamboo in the window it started out with two stalks and now I have the main one I gave my sister three pieces and I have a second and I'm rooting some now my lucky bamboo is almost to the top of my window
I am house sitting and dog sitting so I went through your videos in the last two days. Thanks so much for all your work. I really like them and am learning from you. I look forward to seeing more.
Mine has been in water for nearly a y ear now and has reached the top of the kitchen window. I'll re pot into dirt today and let you know what happens! Thank you for this information!
I have had mine in water for over 10 years. I put hydrophobic solution in it one time 5 years ago. I keep the pot full of water and the roots under water most the time. Maybe I will try soil.
Carmen. Thank u so much for this video. I have a lucky bamboo plant I bought at my local Walgreens store here in Ft Collins CO 15 years ago. Yes u read that right. Lately the leaves began turning light green to yellow. I had it in the original pot it came in. Adding spring water every few days. It has been super healthy for years. I would be so sad if I killed it. So last month I repotted it. Same as before just bigger container. It’s not been happy so I am excited to try your way. Thank u so much. I’d love to share pix with u. Just don’t know how to add a pix to this comment. Kristen Jacobson. Colorado
Great video! I have a lucky bamboo, it’s currently in a plastic container in soil topped with pebbles, and the container is inside of a pot with pebbles and water that I keep at an inch high. I really want to pot it in soil only, because I worry about the soil being in water.. I’m a new plant mama and want her to thrive .. 😂
Yeah, the soil in water can be a recipe for root rot. They thrive in one or the other. Either have them in water and pebbles only or soil only. Hope this helps.
Merci pour le partage....J’aime beaucoup ce que vous faites....Les plantes sont tellement importantes dans notre vie....Elles réjouissent les yeux , le regard, le cœur....elles créent des liens ....des échanges .....merci encore....Bien amicalement...
I was wondering what I could do to help my bamboo. Frankly they have become boring. I will be trying this as I do have quite a few in containers with water that never grow.
I see this was filmed in 2018. Did the bamboo survive and if so, did the leaves return to their proper color? My lucky bamboo is turning yellow while sitting in a tight, water filled pot. Our house is chilly in the winter months and I'm looking for some way to save the plants. Love the video!
Love your video, I'm definitely going to plant my lucky bamboo in soil. I have one that is about 2-1/2 feet tall, and it's still in it's original container with rocks and water. I think it will love the soil, as some of the ends of the leaves are brown, but it's mostly hardy and green.
Good luck to you! Remember to water it with filtered or distilled water once you replant it. It's been in water a long time and will need some time to get use to the soil.
thank you for this great information sweetie! I was getting ready to repot two of my lucky bamboo and decided I would look up and see exactly how I should do it and your video popped up! I'm so glad because now I am going to put mine in potting soil! I look forward to seeing more of your videos! I don't do that well with houseplants, I have tons of succulents I live in southern California! I look forward to filming this for my viewers!
Thanks so much for visiting Debrajoy! Mine is still doing great in soil. I would love to see your succulents. I'm in Phoenix and have many out on my balcony.

Its so funny how life works i literally planted some bamboo i had in water yesterday into soil. Please show an update video in a few to see how yours are adjusting. I wish you an abundantly blessed day.
Appreciate the video, Carmen! Most of the videos for this plant will discuss planting in soil, but you're the first one to actually show it. Is your plant still doing well?
I had some lucky bamboo that was in desperate need of pruning/propagating. I had it for awhile, so I was nervous, to kill my plant, but went for it. At first, it was fine, but a week or two after propagating it, I struggled with a lot of root rot, and my plants started dying :( (I wouldn't have noticed except for the rotten smell that I noticed one day in my house - I thought it was some rotting potatoes in my pantry, but it turned out to be my bamboo!). Even some of my good stalks started getting root rot and dying. I transferred them to soil to help try to mitigate over-wet roots, and hope that my stalks could be revived - so far so good, it seems. I think they're slowly getting better, which I'm so happy about. I intend to check the roots/soil (and improve the soil conditions) soon, and see if the root system has gotten healthier (they got pretty destroyed in my transfer), but I have noticed leaves have stopped yellowing, and I'm seeing some new growth! So there's my experience with lucky bamboo in soil - it certainly seems pretty happy about it! Good video!

I am Sherry
Hi Sherry! So glad you found me. Good luck with your lucky bamboo, I'm sure it will be much happier in soil and more room.
Wow, they must look amazing. You may want to try planting one in soil and see how it does. Good luck!
Same here!!!! I’m replanting my big boy tomorrow 😬
I just saw your video and transferred mine. I hope it wasn't too early. My roots were very small.
Wow Rosa! That's wonderful! Thanks so much for the kind words. Blessings!
I am house sitting and dog sitting so I went through your videos in the last two days. Thanks so much for all your work. I really like them and am learning from you. I look forward to seeing more.
Thank you Brenda so much for your binge watching! I appreciate your support so much. I definitely have more videos on the way!
Mine has been in water for nearly a y ear now and has reached the top of the kitchen window. I'll re pot into dirt today and let you know what happens! Thank you for this information!
Update?

I've had a lucky bamboo in water for 10 years and its leaves never get green. Now I know why. I'll pot them today :)
Good luck! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very helpful I just bought a plant on sat was'nt sure how to repot it now I know.
Glad it was helpful!
I love getting my hands dirty too...I always get my dishes washed after I have been potting. Best way to clean them.
Very well explained thankyou for the video 🙂♥️

Pot was really cute🥰
Thanks so much. I only have one bamboo plant left, I going to see what it does in soil.
Good luck!
Thank you, doing this today!
I was wondering what I could do to help my bamboo. Frankly they have become boring. I will be trying this as I do have quite a few in containers with water that never grow.
Awsome video..answered all my questions......
Glad I could help!
I see this was filmed in 2018. Did the bamboo survive and if so, did the leaves return to their proper color? My lucky bamboo is turning yellow while sitting in a tight, water filled pot. Our house is chilly in the winter months and I'm looking for some way to save the plants. Love the video!
Mine were in water & looking puny so tomorrow I’m going to put them in soil & put them in shade to see if they get better
Looking so nice bamboo plant
Thank you!
Yes ! Lucky bamboo grow well in soil... thanx 4 sharing
I have a bamboo plant but always been in soil. What i didn't know was the real name.👏🥰
🌿 Hi Carmen ..
Thank you for these tips & your obvious love for planets. I need to transfer from water to soil. My question is: Should the pot have drainage holes? Thank you so much 🌿
Blessings 🙏 Always
Yes, ideally it should have drainage holes.

Looks really pretty in it’s new pot! Never even thought about the Lucky Bamboo being planted in soil! I may give it a try! Thanks for sharing!
I didn't either until I came across a plant tour video showing it planted in soil. Let me know how it works out for you! And thanks for watching!
Appreciate the video, Carmen! Most of the videos for this plant will discuss planting in soil, but you're the first one to actually show it.
Is your plant still doing well?
Very very helpful. Thank you 🙏🏽 🎉
I really like the pot with the face on it, very cool!
Thank you, I painted that myself. I appreciate your visiting!

Best of luck!
how much times should i water my plant daily or weekly? i just got my plant recently and im trying to learn more about it!
I water them when the top 1-2 inches is completely dry. I don't let them go dry all the way.
@@carmenwhitehead thank you!
i have done this and i was a bit afraid...so i researched and i was led to you! Thanks just the answers i needed!
So glad it helped you! BTW, my plant is doing great and thriving.
My Lucky Bamboo looks limp and the leaves are turning yellow. I’m going to take your advice and put it in dirt. I’m hoping it does well.
Good video!
Thanks so much for watching! Remember to fertilize it with a house plant fertilizer. Use a diluted dose and that will help keep it healthy.
Oh goSh🤔...your video was aWesome .. your voice is calm .. you didn't ramble ... stayed on point 👉🏻🥰..I subbed ... transferring from water to soil ..saw the yellow leaves and paniCked 😵..but you said , soil will correct! 🙂Thanks again .. bleSsings for y🌞u...I learned a lot !
Thanks so much for visiting and subbing! I'm glad the video was helpful.
Hey Carmen, Thank you for this video :) it’s nice and clear and very helpful, my mum got me some lucky bamboo for my birthday but I have no knowledge about this sort of thing so this was great, thank you! :)
