Would you steam or use a rice cooker? 🍚
Please make a short showing how you do it in the rice cooker!!! I’m too afraid to do it without a video🤣😂😂
For purple one, we soaked steamed. The white one is same with the regular rice which is using the ricer cooker.
Cooker
Rice 🍚cooker...
You can use a rice cooker
Add coconut milk or condensed milk ( if using condensed milk, skip the sugar as condensed milk is heavily sweetened ), sugar, shredded coconut, and tapioca pearls, and chill - you have a great sticky rice dessert.
THANKS SO MUCH! 😁👍❤
@@christynm.8933 😀☺😁You're very welcome. If you opt to use condensed milk, skip the sugar as condensed milk is made heavily sweetened. Only add sugar if you're using coconut milk. Enjoy and have a pleasant day 😀☺😍 !!!
i’ve been to a thai restaurant that serves sticky rice w mango and coconut milk. best thing ive ever had
@@imaduckmooo3947 😀 I'm going to ask for that the next time I dine in a Thai restaurant. Thanks.😀
@@lourdesajramos6774 bet u would love it, it’s called ‘ mango sticky rice ‘ if im not mistaken so if u ever planned on making it urself it’s pretty easy and super delicious !
Part of the reason why you should rinse your rice several times, then soak it for about 24 hours is to reduce the level of arsenic in it. While it might seem annoying it is a lot better for your health. Rinsing and soaking can reduce arsenic levels by 80% or so!
hold up; since when’s there been arsenic in rice????
@@twtclikk7841 It occurs naturally due to the water and soil it is grown in.
@@eb1634 looked it up just to make sure and wow! this is a real today i learned thing
been eating rice my whole life and i never knew rice could have arsenic
thanks for the heads up!! this’ll help a lot of people
@@twtclikk7841 Yeah! The amount of arsenic really varies depending on where it is grown. Just make sure to rinse it several times, then soak it in a bunch of water 24 hours before use and that really does help! You're welcome!
🤯😲🥺 I never knew this! Thanks 😊! When I was training as a chef we didn't even learn this!!
Rice cooker is not lazy, it’s mastered perfection.
Exactly, I’ve never made a bad batch of rice with a rice cooker. Always perfect.
@@deepspace385 yes.
yes exactly idk why uk/us cook rice with pots, it actually just wastes your gas and attention while the rice cooker you just wash and push few buttons and focus on other dishes.👍
Filipinos are notorious for cooking rice the wrong (well, based on Asian standards) but that did not deter us from enjoying rice with every meal, even dessert.
Me, personally, I do not rinse rice several time, just 1 or 2 and I don't measure the water, i just use my fingers. Some people hate the burnt bottoms, but I like it, especially when it's is freshly cooked.
I also like the kind of hard bottom (not burnt exactly but if the heat was a little higher than it should have been) and im Asian so everyone thinks that's very weird 😂
Suman Filipino dessert
sarap nunnnnn they use sticky rice and other things bc I'm a filipina
There is a reason to rinse and soak🙂
Burnt bottoms are the best
@@Emlane09 there is, but you have to remember that many prepackaged things are normally rinsed before packaging. Rinsing and soaking should be done if you get it straight from the crops
In Malaysia, we use that Wild Sweet Rice to cook sweet porridge and we called that dish as "Bubur Pulut Hitam". Very tasty dessert. 😋
I like it as an ice cream flavor☺ ais krim pulut hitam
yeah omg how long has it been since i ate that dish
"I soaked them separate otherwise the white rice will turn PURPLE." I see nothing wrong with that.
i like fly fishing
I think she wanted the variey in color to make it look more interesting. I really liked the look of the finished product!
It would affect the taste of the white rice too.
@@Will-rj1sb yeah in korea(or any east asia country i guess?) We eat purple rice and it tastes the same with white rice. It just gives more coulor
@@윤세정-l7f oh nice i like eating rice before fishing
I cook rice in my bamboo basket, how I was taught by my friends parents 25 years ago. The method I use is literally a 15 min process to cook, longest part is waiting for the rice to soak. 4 hrs in hot water, 8 or overnight for cold and ALWAYS RINSE!
Thank you for this video I have looked up how to make sticky rice without a cooker so many times and really couldn't find anything this helped so much
You should make Arroz con Leche! It's Mexican rice pudding. And you should make horchata with it, which is basically the rice pudding but blended in a nice refreshing drink!
yes we would eat a lot of sticky rice, especially during holiday, when all of our family gathered in my grandma's house my family will cook the sticky rice exactly like u did and we'd eat it with dried shredded coconut or steamed shredded coconut, we called the sticky rice 'ketan' in indonesia and 'serundeng' for the coconut, the coconut can be either sweet or salty and spicy, and sometimes i'd actually eat sticky rice for breakfast or with other savory food 😃 lots love for sticky rice
I’m so happy I found your channel:)
Loveee eating sticky rice with sweet coconut milk and mango 😍😍😍
That sounds delicious 😋🤤!!
That sounds delicious 😋🤤!! Maybe add banana?!?! I'm going to try this, this weekend! 😃
@@daryltaylor8977 yess! I've never added banana to it before but with mango its guaranteed to be delicious!
@@ninabarrington654 you should try khao tom mat, it's a banana sticky rice desert I don't even like bananas that much but I LOVE this desert
The aggressive “GOTTA” kills me😂
Sticky rice is very very local to us
It's so delicious and has sort of a nutty flavour
But my mom just washes it several times and soaks it for like an hour before putting it in the pressure cooker
That's how we've eaten it my whole life
My go to Sticky Rice dessert is with a dash of cinnamon and some different kinds of berries. Definitely an American flavor but I understand where you're coming from talking about the different techniques you can use
American?!?! From what area? Down south it's butter and salt and pepper, or gravy. But I'm not against trying it 😃... But then again I don't know anyone in my area who even knows what "sticky rice" is..... I only know from my Filipino friends when I lived in California.
I feel like your version sounds more american than hers
I loveee sticky rice , especially with chick peas it's so delicious
Where did you get the cheese cloth for steaming? I’ve been looking all over for it. W I call it cheese cloth, some call it wrap. What do you call it?
They’re called cheese cloths and you can get them basically anywhere, including Walmart
Amazon has it too
I get it from the supermarket. Ours is a Safeway, but I’ve seen it at Walmart and Target.
Some areas have different supplies at their stores. If no one is purchasing 'cheese' cloth in her area, the stores there will stop carrying it. Just because you can find it at Safeway and Walmart doesn't mean she can... she _did_ say she looked *everywhere* for it...
Just use Amazon. You will get it cheap, probably with free delivery and you will get it fast- just make sure to check the reviews (of product & seller) and check when it will be delivered by before picking one.
At Walmart go near the canning isles if not there you can find it in the scissor cloth area for crafting
yes its worth it! makes it fluffier
As a burmese, we actually eat sticky rice as a dessert or even breakfast sometimes. We eat it with the seasoned sesame seeds and some coconut flakes. It's called "Kout Nyin Paung". So delicious!
In the Philippines, we have kakanin. It's a general term for sticky rice desserts.
In my cultural sticky rice is served as " Jolpan" which includes sticky rice, yogurt/ milk, sugarcane syrup / sugar/ jaggery. We serve it like a snacks or starter specially during our traditional new year ( around April) . And I always feel sleepy after a bowl of that
I soak them together. So that it would get purple altogether. It's pretty. And yummy.
Yes it does worth the time and effort
So you can enjoy delicious sticky rice
My moms friend put their sticky rice in rice basket containers, and it is so good!
Try adding coconut milk, my mom made those rice once in a while and its very sticky, but delicious, i am very full after just one bowl of it
I love coconut rice! I just add coconut milk to my rice cooker instead of water after rinsing. Goes great with curries!
i did cook it in a rice cooker before!! It saved a loooot of time🤣🤣
I am from north-east thailand
And this kind of rice is something
we eat everyday for breakfast lunch
and dinner. Some says that it's too much starch but I don't know
I grow up eating like this.
I usually use round-grain rice and I cook it the way my Taiwanese teacher taught me. I don’t soak it, but I wash it several times and then I cook it in a rice cooker. I’ve never done soak and steam before, but I kinda like how fluffy it looks :)
Totally a process. Thank goodness for Victoria. 🙏❤
yum purple rice is bomb
Let the rice turn puuurple☺
My aunts used to make me sweet black sticky rice mixed with condensed milk and many stuff they're very good
White rice turns purple ?! 😮 I learn so much from your videos
Yep. All the time. I cook regular rice with a rice cooker. Then the steamer for the sticky rice only. White sticky rice is bomb with steak. make a spicy Asian dip on the side for the meat dip. Easy meal. To save the extra rice if you made too much, put it into a small zip lock bag like a burrito form. Next day throw it the microwave for left overs.
The cooker method is very good too but I prefer steamed
When u steam white rice then put some pandan leaf in water before steaming. Doing this will give the rice a wonderful fragrance
Finally, a cooking RUclipsr who doesn’t go into big fucking stories and shit and just shows us the food. It seems like every chef on RUclips has to make their dish about some story
I would prefer the purple rice, makes things more interesting to have a colorful rice.
Her: "Sticky Rice"

@lifeofacuber2 yang kuning ada kunyit tapi tak boleh rasa kunyitnya-
Malays usually eats basmati rice.
Sticky rice with tea is unmatched
The sweet setting on a decent rice cooker is for sticky rice. I used to cook the traditional way but the rice cooker is almost the same but it's so convenient
Assamese tribal people also eat it as a dessert with jaggery and milk/cream . It's a another kind of heaven .
We make sticky rice like
1:wash it
2:pour water in presser cooker or our traditional pot(the sicky rice is supposed to be dry but cooked)
3:put the washed sticky rice in in the pot or pressure cooker
Cook it untill the water soaks and stir it if your cooking in pot occasionally orelse it will burn
Then wait for it to cool a bit not that much
Then done
BRUH you remind me of my childhood type of take and go snack. I don't think it's still there but if I find it ill maybe buy it.
You should only soke it if your cooking allot if you cook 3 to 4 cups no need..and you have to cook it like rice or add some coconut milk in it to use for it to cook and add a pinch salt too its delicious try it pls
In Malaysia, there is a traditional Malay food called "lemang",its a combination of sticky rice+coconut milk put in bamboo and being burned(?)directly upon fire, Im not sure what the process is called in English, and the one u did,we called it as "lemang pulut hitam" except we add coconut milk with a lil bit of salt in it
Since my father is selling this full time,he said soaking is necessary to make sure it being cooked properly unless it will turn out uncooked, but since it turns out ok for both for u,u can choose either way:)
A head cover for covering a cooking bows! GENIOUS!👉🤓👈
YOUR A JUGAD PROFESSIONAL
woah I didn't know i had this many steps my grandma makes it and sends me very frequently damn bro im grateful asf. also wild sweet rice is my favourite
Try this by cooking it in a pot with coconut milk, sugar, and juiced ginger (blended ginger). This is called “Puto Maya” in the Philippines and it’s one of my favourite sticky rice desserts
How about Biko or Valenciana? Don't know if you already did those but will still look forward to it.
We don’t own a rice cooker which is what I see most ppl use for sticky rice. And one day I got a rice ball maker and needed sticky rice, I used a pot and just extra water, Bc when u extra water it makes it stickier
Me, who has never made sticky rice and isn’t planning to: hmm yes very informative
I like the "kakanin" like "suman". It's a steamed sticky rice with coconut milk
That's how we normally cook sticky rice but we usually cook/steam it in a earthen pot made esp. for this purpose only 😊
What you just did is way better than rice cooker method
I LOVEEEE sticky rice
I can't cook sticky rice but some family members are PROS at it.
Why not? You literally just steam it it's easier to make than any other rice lol
i have the exact same steamer! nice
My mom had me make rice for dinner and instead of regular rice I accidentally made stick rice but her and my siblings liked it so I’m happy
We used to do the same method at a chinese restaurant I used to work at to make ALL of our rice
Does anyone else like it when she says *GOTTA* or is it just me?
We eat alot of rice and sticky rice here, overall steaming the rice or cooking it in the rice cooker doesn’t change much. The biggest difference is that the rice cooker sticky rice feels more dense while steamed sticky rice feels more “detachable?”. Also you don’t have to soak the rice overnight
That’s how Koreans eat rice. We mix it with a bunch of different grains, wild rice being one of the most popular, and beans and the purple is the trademark look. We usually use rice cooker or more traditionally boil it then eat the “burnt” bottom in a variety of dishes.
I love sticky rice
Thank you so much
I want to try this
In the Philippines sticky rice is one of the main ingredients(?) when making traditional foods
My grandma does that with beans, generally it gives them a softer and lighter flavor.
Sticky rice is my fav lol
My Thai aunt is really good at making sticky rice
Just add a bit of extra water, it always works for me!
I must get the purple one. To make saki!
This is how my family does it. We put the rice into a big, LIKE VERY BIG plastic microwave safe bowl, put 500 grams of it and then fill the water until it is covering all of it plus a few centimetres. We soak it overnight and next morning we pop it into the microwave for 10 minutes and its done
As a pro rice chef, just buy a rice cooker and wash the rice with ur hands(swirl the rice around in water to release stinks smell). But soaking is fine.
You need to try the sticky rice in purple 💜 there's no use if you don't want it purple
My family usually would add in coconut milk in it and eat the sticky rice with durian
Try to add coconut milk next time. The rice will become creamy, rich and more fragrant.
I absolutely _loath_ sticky rice that's *not* soaked. My mother-in-law always just throws it in the rice cooker and it clumps together _so_ badly, drives me crazy. But to be fair- it's not like I ever bother to soak some rice, so I just complain silently. 🤣
How did you italicize loath?
That's exactly what we want..... purple
Rinse several times it reduces the starch plus you don't have to soak overnight at the least two hours trust me I cook sticky rice every day it's part of my lao culture
I like really sticky rice that's seconds away from turning into mochi and i eat it not as a desert but for meals agsjsk I rinse it, put it in a pot with double the amount of water and put it on high heat until it starts boiling(10min?), then i lower the fire a bit and put a lid on it and after 15min i leave it on the side so it still cooks a bit with the steam (i do this way so i can go to my room and continue what i was doing while it's cooking, i also boil broccolis at the same time in another pot
i’m indian, and we always rinse and soak our rice. i was told that if you cook rice in a rice cooker, the rice will be really starchy and that isn’t exactly the best for your health, especially since rice is my hometowns staple food.
I like Biko🤤
Add mash potatoes and go ham smashing/grinding it. You'll get something called sticky mash potatoes
I wash my hair with the purple sticky rice water, my hair never tangles, grows super
fast, an is so silky. I use it once per month.
Uncle roger crying at the sight of a colander
Can you do champorado? Idk if you already did😅
I do sushi rice in the instant pot and it comes out plenty sticky.
I live in Europe where we don't eat that much rice. Every exotic rice (brown/red/black/..) is expensive here. Cheapest was 10€/kg.
I've always soaked my sticky rice whenever I'm cooking some chaporado since my mum always told me it's "dirtier" than normal rice, and still wash it a few times afterwards
you said that it got separated easily, maybe it's because you washed it, then soaked it overnight, then washed it again, you're actually washing the extra starches away resulting in grains that are more separate when cooked
lmao we never soaks 🤣🤣 this is too much
Yeah I have
Have u tried thee “champorado” its a filipino dish if u know lugaw its kinda like it u use sticky rice in champorado
Soaked it separately just for the white rice to end up purple
Does the purple rice has a different flavor?
I assume it’ll taste like codeine
no, its just purple lol
It's nuttier, and chewy
It would depend on the species, origin, and brand, but in general…what Katya above me said 🙂
Sticky rice is actually the easiest rice to cook on campfire. Bc you only need to soak it, and then steam it. No need to worry about burned rice on the bottom of the pot.
Why don't you make linukay with the white sticky rice instead??? It tastes amazing
Steam and my dad got addicted to sticky rice and won’t stop begging my mom to make it
I lived in japan for about a decade also I’m half Korean but ive never steamed rice (or heard about it) before should I try it?
yes, try it
