That rotary experiment is also the explanation for the '75-80 Chevy Monza. Pretty interesting the lines on that xp897-gt @ 3:56 . Just put the wankle back up front, Rip off a ferrari GTC 365 side window treatment, add some prototype intergrated bumpers and fit it on the Vega wheelbase, and you have a little 2 rotor economy car that was supposed to happen. When the wankle was cancelled and sold off, we still got the xp 897 inspired vega with a small block V8, not unlike what ford had already done with it's Mustang II. General Motors killed the "manual" option due to poor sales. Manual was in quotes for a reason. The system would use an electronic clutch and an electronic stick that would still be tied to the same dual clutch transmission except you would have full control over the shifting and the only automated logic would be rev matching. But its the same thing as the standard tires being all seasons rather than summer performance, most people buying these cars are using them as mall crawlers, and very few are actually hitting the track, and as a company they will follow the money trail.
Excellent job on this video, I was not expecting a lot of historical information but you did your homework! Footnotes about other dead end mid engined concepts would've been super rad, like the mid eighties MG EXE concept that some say inspired the NSX.
I do remember the Cien. Wonderfully crazy concept. Also cause it's really fitting "Mid engine Corvette?" "THE TIME IS NOW!" *aggressively slams button to approve development* -C8 Corvette approval process, probably.
I work at a Chevy dealership. I took a Vette out once for a drive and it's power was truly terrifying to me. I had never driven anything with over 300hp and was not ready for such torque. Having access to a Vette that's a lot more stable for the "novice" drivers should increase sales.
6:48 ...this thing was also in Gran Turismo 4 and 5. My GT4 Cien was fully modded and weight shaven, I've still got a picture of it maxing out at 526km/h on Test course!!!
Dave McLellan talks about the mid engine Corvette it in his book. Corvette from the Inside. Don't forget he took over from Duntov in 1975 so the decisions that resulted in the C4 were made in the late 70's. The C4 team seemed to like Porsches like the 914 for club racing and strongly considered mid engine, but the aging C3 started to increase in sales and they didn't want to rock the boat. McLellan mentioned that the traditionalists when asked insisted the Corvette was a front engine, rear wheel drive car and that's what customers expected. Also the fact that the very existence of the Corvette was possible because of the shared drive-trains with the truck division and the economies of scale that went with that. It's very bold that the C8 is what it is. It had a lot going against it.
I agree with you about this being a long time coming. I am excited for this Corvette. Even more than, I am for the C5 Z06 Corvette that I am still lusting after. (:

@@connoisseuroftigolbitts Do you really want a C7 after the 8 intro? C7 looks ancient and cheap now, it's crazy how fast that happened.
@@connoisseuroftigolbitts Damn right!! I love the C7! They can have that carbon copy, have no interest in it whatsoever. I was considering a C5/C6 but C7 might come back in.
Dude. Those CAN-AM cars were amazing. The McLaren M-Class Card were amazing. They used a bored out 454 and made it a 494. It’s made 740 HRSPRS!! In the late 60s and Early 70s, that’s amazing. And it sounded phenomenal.
The Cervs got banned twice by GM but the grand sport managed to sneak past for a bit.
I’m glad y’all finally made a video on this
My grandpa worked under Arkus-Duntov and told me all about the mid-engined Corvette history, and it was something I had never known much about before now, and fun fact:
he doesn’t like it lol
In WWII in central Europe. Czeckoslovak, please tell him that his small block V8 was one of the best industrial designs if not the BEST industrial design of 20th century.. But GM is a joke these days. Delirium Pretends is the elf of all capstools see?.
I think for the next episode of wheelhouse you guys should do the evolution of car horns. Going from the aooga horns of early 20th century, to the brassy horns of the 50s and 60s, to the four note Cadillac horns from the 80s and 90s to present day.
Soooo the corvette should've been a rotary?
Rob dahm was right all along!
GOD DAHM SHUT UP
Jk
Really enjoy WheelHouse, keep up the great work!
It will be GM's most successful generation car. I want one..it just shows how porsche ferrari lambo mclaren have been ripping off people with the price..snob value. This C8 is a supercar for $60,000.
Hope so, hope the quality is there.
The mid-engine Corvette is Basie a childhood wet dream specifically for people who don't even know how to drive
First a 262ci, but then a 305 for 77- 79. Mines a ton of fun, check it out. Cool Chanel, great video.
The score of this video should have been Michael Jackson's "WANNA BE STARTIN SOMETHIN"
I seen a c8 corvette at a drag strip about a month ago(it was corvette day at the track)it fully stock did an 11.3-11.1 I onestly it’s really fast for production cars listed at 59k-71k
hello nolen can you help my alien from area 51 become a car guy
Show him the Nissan 370z review by Regular Car Reviews, thats going to be very helpful for an inexperienced enthusiast.
No other car company will ever make a sports car with greater value than GM with the Corvette
I live in the Metro Detroit area and I cant get over how beautiful this car is, you see them all wrapped up cruising down the road from time to time and even in the black and white camo fuckery it’s a beautiful car
*Baby boomers and guys who claim they've owned a c7 and 2 c5's:* "ThATs nOt a CoRvEtTe BeCaUsE i'M StOoOpId"
Also the vette without the performance exhaust makes 490 horsepower and 465 lbft
Good thing I have a C3 and am not a baby boomer. Zora always wanted the mid engine, so to say that the C8 is not a Vette because of the mid engine layout is indeed stupid. The C3 was supposed to be that way, but GM said that it was too European and wouldn't sell well in the US, so we had to wait.

wow rotary corvettes? Xp897gt
Guess Rob Dahm isn’t ahead of his time hahaha 😂
Fantastic to see someone talking about the Midnighr Club 3 other than myself
Is there any way I could buy that SUPER SICK Corvette Indy from the '80s???? xD
Mid-engine C8 Corvette : *exist*
Looks like Ford GT and Acura NSX got some competition here

This new Corvette will bury the the new BMW Toyota Supra.
is the same to say that the next Bugatti will bury the next golf GTI, both are two different cars with different purpose behind, and don't call it bmw Supra, you look dumb as fuck
visuals calling it what it is
you cant tease us with this!!! we all saw the C8 on your instagram story lol. NEED the bumper2bumper ASAP
Make an up to speed on Chevy monte Carlo
Been Made!
2:41 love walk by pantera one of my top fav bands ever love that band
the corvair was a rear engined chevy and look how that turned out.
This Was a joke and not ment to be taken seriously. i do think the new corvette will be very good.
Suspension and tire technology were the down fall of the corvair
I think it is time for Chevy to revive the Corvair as a cheap mid-engine car for those who cannot afford a Vette, also since the Vette is now a mid-engine car so why not? The technology is there so they should risk it now
You realize there is a difference between rear and mid engine placement?
@@bradwhite5884 That end of the market is filled nicely by the Miata.
No relevance what so ever..this is a Corvette supercar in 2019..wake up.
2:40 glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks of the band pantera whenever I see a pantera car
Cerv 3 or as you know it a xj220 front end with a modified nsx back end or atleast that what it appears to be and the c8 has abit of ferrari and the new nsx about it 🤔🤔
Yep that's what I though too. Ferrari 488 and NSX had a baby. 🤔
It looks like the Jaguar XJR-15.
@@ELGlueckert ye does look like it but went for the xj220 as more people would know what it is lol
Clicked on video to learn on the past of mid engine corvettes. Got live performance of Nolan singing “Walk” by pantera. I love donut
Look Nolan it’s been 3 months and I know you’ve listened to Periphery IV by now and that’s what you have been waiting for. Not the C8🤫🤫🤫🤥
Itty Bitty LITTY Nolan listens to Periphery?
8:40 "The current age of a corvette owner is 64"
Missing a word or two, but completely right. I have one at 21 but even the younger owners are guys in their 40s and 50s.
Because Baby boomers have all the money.
You wanted to get under my skin , you call yourself a friend. I got more friends like you, what do I do?
Hell yeah, I saw Pantera five times in my teens and twenties. R.I.P Dimebag Darrel and Vinny Paul.
The fact that he mentioned MC3 makes me so happy because its hands down my favorite racing game of all time and i feel like its underappreciated
First...... Damn boiz it's only been up for 7 minutes and hundreds of ya beat me to the first comment and like. XD
The C8 is amazing coming in at a price like this for what is essentially a Super Car.
I've got a c3 with a swapped 454 v8 and it now makes around 470-490hp
world:use smaller more efficient engines with hybrid power at the least to combat global warming
USA/GM: 6.2 litre naturally aspirated engine (f. the world)
Person: *buys high-end sports car*
snobby prius-driving environmentalist: OH MY GOSH YOU HORRIBLE PERSON YOU ARE RUINING THE WORLD THAT MASSIVE ENGINE, AT LEAST THE EUROPEANS ARE MAKING SPORTS CARS WITH TINY ENGINES *the thing whines*
European: *laughs in 16 miles per gallon porsche*
General Motors killed the "manual" option due to poor sales. Manual was in quotes for a reason. The system would use an electronic clutch and an electronic stick that would still be tied to the same dual clutch transmission except you would have full control over the shifting and the only automated logic would be rev matching.
But its the same thing as the standard tires being all seasons rather than summer performance, most people buying these cars are using them as mall crawlers, and very few are actually hitting the track, and as a company they will follow the money trail.

GIMME MORR VIDEOS !!!!!!!! Definitely best channel for gear heads on YT
Also cause it's really fitting
"Mid engine Corvette?"
"THE TIME IS NOW!"
*aggressively slams button to approve development*
-C8 Corvette approval process, probably.
I work at a Chevy dealership. I took a Vette out once for a drive and it's power was truly terrifying to me. I had never driven anything with over 300hp and was not ready for such torque. Having access to a Vette that's a lot more stable for the "novice" drivers should increase sales.
Ive been waiting for that pantera joke for years thank you.
You guys should do a video on the differences between front-engine, mid-engine and rear engine.
Just found this channel... Very impressed with the content! Awesome stuff! Thanks! 😎👍
Wow. Great job guys. Very informative and entertaining as always.
Did not recognise that car at all until you mentioned Midnight Club
Dude, just imagine a 4-Rotor, Mid-Engine, Gullwing-Door Corvette! That would've been AWESOME!!
I saw one in Nashville at Green Hills Mall on Saturday it is amazing.
😄 It's kinda funny you mention Pantera the band, because I think the name of the band 'Pantera', WAS actually inspired by the car.
I’ve seen the Indy Prototype in the corvette museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
It was amazing.
I'm stoked about this car. I never thought i'd ever be stoked about a corvette.
i cant believe that nobody appreciates nolan's amazing pantera cover
Donut Media: why won’t Ford make a corvette competitor
Chevy: *makes the Corvette a GT competitor*
I would say job well done on this.
Very informative
The vette with the targa top is pretty awesome
