I ran through all four of the dragon warrior games on NES back in the 90s when I was a kid. Some of my favorite gaming memories and 4 remains one of my top 10 games of all time.
Great review and thanks for using the mobile version. I have now played most of the first one and its nice to pay a bit for a game and not be faced with paywalls and ads. Looking forward to the series. I have played VIII and XI so it has been great to see how it all started.
I apologize for the mouse just hovering on the screen most of the time. DQ2 was the first one I actually started recording for, and I didn't realize how distracting it can be to watch. Kept it offscreen when I could in future game recordings. I know I could've re-recorded it, but that would involve me entering the Cave to Rendarak again.
Thank you for a wonderfull review! I too cant understand why the Prince of Carnock is getting so much "hate" for being useless! Sizzle kicks ass, he has a good punch - especially with Erdricks sword, and he has good healing spells. For me he was the best. Love the game, BUT the random encounters were off the charts and nearly stopped me from playing further. Waaaaaay to many battles for my taste.
I believe the NES version has a lot to do with his reputation. Apparently, the strongest weapon he could equip was...an Iron Lance. So, yeah. Never play Dragon Warrior 2.
@@earthboundian4871 an iron lance!😂😂 Awesome 😂👍 I guess that explains it. SuperDerek (an old school rpg-channel) said the same as you: Dont play Dragon Warrior 2!
The second one kicks you directly in the nuts. At least the NES version. Survival is pure luck, even grinding and top gear has nothing on the difficulty. Everything can kill you no matter how strong you are. The mobile version has things way more balanced. Played the mobile version lately and it was a great experience, the NES one still gives me nightmares. Dragon Warrior 2 improved in so many things, while staying at the roots the genre is known for. The world is great, the multiple character system is way better than Ultima 3s and you had quests to fulfill. Something borrowed from Might and Magic. Plus it goes fully open world later on. Impressive for its system.
Everybody always complains about the cave to Rendarak/Rhoam, but I never had too much problem with it. It was the overworld section on the other side that always makes me wanna throw my controller across the room in frustration.
I suppose that pitfall room would be better with a guide. And...oh boy. I'm assuming you're talking about the exploding Batmandrils. I made it to the save point before realizing what they could do. Dodged a bullet there!
@@earthboundian4871 yeah, those things are hella annoying, but also every other enemy in that area hits like a fucking truck. Every time I exit the cave, I'm praying I can make it to the save point shrine.
I dunno, I can see your points in DQ II’s favor, but I still think it’s a bit too big for its own good. For as simple as DQ I is, it’s also much easier to digest and get through. Good review though! Glad I found your channel.
Thanks! I definitely see your point about it being smaller and more digestible. I'll admit that I might be biased since I happened to play through DQ2 and Builders 2 at the same time, what with Builders 2 being a direct sequel to it.

Dragon Quest's mobile ports are extremely solid overall. Especially Four. Though not Eight so much, apparently.

The switch game almost looks like the phone game
@@OlgaG18 The Switch version is basically the phone version but zoomed in and with some different sprites.

I imagine the original Cave to Rendarak sold a lot of strategy guides.
@@earthboundian4871 Let’s just put it that way: It took a lot of patience.
The same experience with finding the prince of cannock (I call him Bran) I went through the dungeon and found the silver key then found the spring
This is what happens when we don't talk to guard NPCs.
Great video, highly enjoyed it. Btw just beat the game today and I can TOTALLY RELATE TO THE FINAL DUNGEON😡😂
So much pain.
As I recall, that sumbitch also had "sacrifice." Good times! 😅
"Some nameless goddess"
Me: Oh, you mean Rubiss?
Depends on the game, I suppose. She's not mentioned very often even in her games.

Earthboundian Hah, no one has zero bias. I’ll admit that I’m a bit soft for DQ1 because by pure chance it was the first RPG I genuinely played.
Nice! Mine was Super Mario RPG!

the NES version is a lot harder than the remake

What about viii and x?
You mean will I review them? Id probably review the Zenithian trilogy before I did 8. I'd love to play 10 if it ever gets localized!

Gameboy Color Version is superior imo ...but I digress it's a really good review
Thanks! I've heard the Game Boy versions are very good, especially 3. Though I do like the mobile version's updated script and spell names.
Personally, I think the graphics in the game boy ports a a bit unappealing, and I absolutely despise the botched localizations in those versions.
