Your profile picture reminds me of my Dad's. He was on the USS JFK during Nam. As soon as he got out he threw away all of his stuff. Uniform, ribbons and everything. The other day I asked him why he did that and he told me it was because he was young and had a bad attitude and didn't like being told what to do. He said he regrets throwing all of his stuff out and wished he didn't. The other day I was at a Military surplus store and picked up one of the ribbons he had and gave it to him. Made him very happy! Donno if you'll read this but thank you for your service!

Four things to always remember as a leader.
    1) Being “unapproachable” is the worst quality to have.
    2) Never forget the times when you didn’t know.
    3) Stay humble (kind of goes with #1&2)
    4) Never make the mistake of thinking you can’t learn from everybody, even those under your command.

Young man you put out a great video. As a retired Chief you made me very proud how you conducted yourself and your personal views were spot on. We were all junior Sailors at one time and we all had to embraced the suck at some point. Meaning no matter what we all had to endure some stupid BS rules that we didn't agree with. Some advice...get your ESWS or EAWS pin, start studying for advancement and get that Crow. Give your all everyday and put out 100%. Remember the only thing that we truly own in this life is our Last Name. Have everyone remember Alark as one of their most motivated and outgoing Sailors and who knows one day you could be a CMC or even the MCPON making the crazy rules of eating soup with a knife..lol. I wish you the all best of luck, stay safe, and keep charging. Retired HMC(FMF/SW/AW).

Great video! I’ve served in the Navy for 24 years now and the best lesson you’ll learn is formulating your own leadership style.
Pro: You’ll interact with all walks of life in the Navy and learn a lot from them. VA Home loans, free college, support services of all types not just for you, also family.
Con: Personal space is very limited, especially on a ship no matter the size. Announcements, Bells, Pipping, Talking, Aircraft taking off/landing, your sleep time is definitely another Sailors work time.
All of these examples are my interactions, they are probably different from person to person.🤷🏽‍♂️
    Stay blessed!

People with too much time on their hands get in trouble easily so all that pointless work is to keep you busy. It also makes the time go by faster. There is nothing worse than spending your day doing nothing. The major pro you left out is your access to learning. Studying for the next higher rank and learning a useful skill like computer science, electronics, electrical or mechanics all for free. These are high paying jobs in civilian life. The other is security. You really have to try hard to get stabbed, shot or become a crime victim. In many U.S. cities this is a constant threat. I think the younger you are the harder it is to live the military life. You'll find that as you mature partying and risky behavior becomes much less appealing. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and may God bless you and everyone you love.

Once they give you something they know it's done without having to follow up on it.

I did twenty-three honorable years and retired as a Chief. You present yourself well, you are articulate and smart enough to make notes for the video. Job well done. Don't take orders personally and keep those young man emotions in check. Proud to say you and I are/we're in the same US Navy! God bless you and your loved ones son. You're never alone. Keith

Excellent video, Alark. I completely understand where you come from with the cons, such as leadership. I have seen good and bad leadership in the Navy and I try to take what I learned from good leaders and give them the kind of leadership I would like to work for. Unfortunately there are leaders who don't care about anyone but themselves out there, but I hope the poor leaders don't ever form your opinion on the entire Navy. Anyway, whether you stay in or get out, enjoy your time and don't ever let the cons of the Military get you down. At the end of the day, the Military life is only temporary. We were all civilians before and we will all be civilians again. Just go out there and do your job to the best of your ability and acquire some skills and take those with you whenever you decide to leave the service.

  • @Nick-yv1wy
    @Nick-yv1wy 5 лет назад +7

As another Navy dude living in Japan, I second this video. You don't have to be 100% Hooyah Navy but you should fulfill the promises of your contract. That's the best way to keep those post-navy opportunities open. I'm getting out in a few months and I strongly recommend sticking it out and finishing strong so that when you want a government (better) job paying way more, you will have the option. Otherwise, enjoy the place you're at, but don't let that cause a bad mark on your record that is irreversible.

I grew up in the projects to a single mom and me, my brother, and sister all in one room. Did ok in high school, not great, worked jobs in my free time, and joined the Navy just to get out of Dodge. Every day, those first four years, I'd swear under my breath about getting out, but the bastards kept promoting me. Made rank pretty quickly, Chief at 10 years, and then a few years later (after doing college at night when I wasn't deployed or on shore duty) got picked up for LDO and got a commission. I retired as a LCDR because I didn't want to stay longer to pay back time for O-5, but my opportunities were endless, and I'm grateful for the Navy. After service I was very much in demand as a civilian and worked as a Navy contractor but working with civilians will never be like my boys when I was in the big canoe club. Think long and hard about your options because as I fly around the world, I constantly talk to men and women about the regret they have for not staying in and doing something much bigger than themselves and many of them felt their life would've been better had they done so. Either way use your GI Bill and get where you want to go in life👍🇺🇲

I'm deciding whether I am going to join air force or navy. I'm more interested in navy but I heard air force is more freedom and better hours. Any advice?

In the Air Force (or naval aviation), a single tiny mistake could cost the lives of a pilot, possibly a crew, and a $20+ million aircraft.
Too high stakes for me to even think about getting involved.

Some of your cons are situational. I tell my division to get the job done and do it safely.... like the spoon and fork thing, if I see a Sailor doing something wrong I'll show them why is wrong, like if it's unsafe or can cause damage.
Keep up the good work, you're the future

Can always change the cycle bro. You seem like a good dude. You can be that one NCO that actually regards what his junior guys have to say. Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work man 👍🤙

Only did about 2 years before I got medically dropped from AW(aircrew) and got an honorable discharge, since I learned I was getting out I started going to medical for any issues I had and now I'm out with 50% disability, I'm only 24. About to use my VA loan to get a $350k house and I'm starting my own business soon, I definitely don't regret joining because of the tools they give you, mental and physical fortitude as well as the benefits. Wish I stayed in for my full contract but it is what it is, biggest mistake people make is when they get out they get lazy and I almost fell into that trap too.
