    Yeah, I found my perfect sound with Helix LT and Stomp and didn't change anything since 2021. Maybe more mids, more or less gain, but that's it. Now I am recording and playing instead of tweaking. I tested those tones in a professional studio, in a rehearsal room, in headphones and in my DAW. And they just work.

      I worked this out a while ago after years of using a SansAmp PSA-1 DI for my workhorse. I still come back to the PSA-1 and GT2 because they FEEL right to play... the actual tone shaping is in the combination of power amp, cab, mic, room sound, EQ, compression, saturation and processing! They all sound within 2-4% the same. Some sound slightly more sizzle, slightly more scooped, but the amp sims ran into the same IR all basically sound the same, there's no large shift in tonal color.
    With real amps, this doesn't seem to be the case. If you connect 3 different real amps to the same cabinet, they all feel very different, maybe 15-20% difference, but when using amp sims, I don't know why but they sound pretty much alike.
    Maybe there's something about a guitar amp working WITH a speaker TOGETHER that makes the special sauce, and having two separate pieces, like an IR and amp sim, that don't actually interact with each other just doesn't capture the differences between amps, like we see with a hardware only solution (amp and cab)

      In that case, there are other factors at play, with some of those being confirmation bias, others being the room your playing....Others being your subjective opinion of the amp itself as well. This is not really the best way to assess similarities between amps given how short human auditory memory is and the numerous biases present before, during and after changes as well as playing responsively in relation to the sound given back.

      @@BrunodeSouzaLino I run a professional studio however, with clients from bands like Slayer, Exodus, Etc. I can definitively tell you that real amplifiers running through the same cabinet have a much bigger difference from amp to amp when recorded, and played back in an a/b comparison, than swapping amp captures/amp models while using an IR.

      Following up, from experience, I guess the best way to summarize it is: the further away from the player an element is on the signal chain, the more it shapes the sound and the speaker seems to be the best point of diminishing returns. The way I like to think about it is: the performance creates the sound conceptually > the pedals shape how the instrument responds to the performance > the amp shapes the actual sound of the performance > the speaker shapes how the sound is presented > everything else afterwards glues the sound to the mix. Maybe it's kind of convoluted, but it's how my brain works when I sit down and chase tones 😅

    “Am I calling modern guitarists lazy? Hell no”
    Well you’re not, but I am. I’d argue the amp is more like 10-20% of the tone, the cab/IR is far more important. I think the bigger issue is all the over-editing of both guitars and drums, making everything sound too clean/clinical. Stop time aligning everything. Make metal dirty again

    • @DrMikeMetal
      @DrMikeMetal  3 месяца назад

      I guess so. There is a reason for this overpolishing trend though, and I started to dig it. I think that polished modern metal sounds smoother to an ear. Although the riffs are actually heavier than they used to be (think Lorna Shore or Humanity's Last Breath). This allows to capture a wider audience. To me, that's a beautiful thing, I'm all for heavy music becoming more popular. If it comes with overcompression and some over-smoothening of 4 K, I can adapt!

And I'd argue, the minor differences you hear here are the same differences you'd hear sending a head through the same cab with the mic in the same location. You'd hear very minor differences between the block letter, 6505, EVH 5150, etc. They can all be dialed in to sound like that. And really, all these amps owe their gratitude to the Soldano SLO.
