      I own a Brompton M6R 2018 model. Zero issues so far. 10300 kms. I've replaced the hinge plates, chain, and handlebar grips, nothing else. I don't ride in the rain. I haven't replaced the rear hinge spindle. I was planning on doing that when I reached 10k kms, but I read on their data sheet: "On used bikes, slight play can be expected at the rear hinge; if the play is unacceptable (more than 2mm in either direction, at the rear wheel axle) the rear hinge bushes need to be replaced." and I'm within that limit, so I don't think it's necessary to touch it. Do you agree? how often do you change the triangle hinge spindle and bushes for your customers? Thanks! ❤greetings from Uruguay 🇺🇾

      @@lorena.gianoni I consulted my Brompton specialist and they said “ it sounds like the rear frame is fine. We have only had to replace the rear hinge bushings a dozen times in the past decade or so, and we are the main Brompton dealer in the D.C. area. I personally have done it twice, one of the times on my 2002 dumpster Brompton I restored a few years back. As long as the frame is within the 2mm of wiggle, it is fine. We only replace it when the wiggle is more obvious like a happy dog wagging its tail. “

    I know a couple that bicycled the perimeter of the United States on Bromptons. They are incredibly strong folding bikes! Not many 'normal' bicycles can ride with a heavy load that many miles without failure. They had very minor issues and none involving Brompton-specific components.
    I'm a mechanic along the Southern Tier and met them 5/8 of the way through their journey as they headed west on the southern border of the U.S.
    I will eventually own a Brompton because they truly are amazing.

    For my purposes: Tern D8.
    I use it as a part-time touring bike for traveling. The Tern can carry my gear of about 15 Kg, including tent etc. I don't do large tours, I guess 60 Km was the furthest. So it gets me to places. The nice thing is that I can take trains and buses too. And stay mobile everywhere. In 2022, I spent four months in France, Italy and Greece. The Tern is really tough, a little heavier though. It is a perfect bike well designed and excellent quality but with the wrong price although this video shows you how to buy a folding bike from another brand at a much more reasonable price. One thing about brompton bikes that I don't like besides the price are the extras that need to be added like a carry bag, or the handlebar bag, the tools, or the lights, or the luggage rack or the air pump to inflate the wheels, these are basic parts of the bike and are considered extras and you have to pay it separately and also with a super expensive price. It is a bike for rich people. There should be a way to test it before you buy it. Anyway thanks for the video and take care.

      Love to know which folding bikes 'come with' a carry bag, handlebar bag and tools - and why would they be 'standard' rather than an add on - think the word you want is choice. The 6 gear Brompton comes with an air pump and as with most brands there are standard models with or without luggage racks (Tern D9 / Reise muller Birdy Touring) - same with Brompton - so the M6R 'comes with' a rack. There is a way to test it before you buy - see the video "2:08 what we recommend is that they come for a test" - and true for all Brompton dealers I have been to.

  • @horsenuts1831
    @horsenuts1831 2 года назад +2

    It's 'horses for courses'. A Brompton can be stored in the most miniscule location, even under a desk and taking up the same width as a waste paper bin. The handling is definitely 'twitchy' when you first ride one, but if you get used to it, and then try to ride a mountain bike, it will feel like you are riding the actual mountain.
    I have had to do long distances on a Brompton, and at that point, they start to get to get a bit tiresome. Bromptons are perfect for the 'first and last mile' of a commute (indeed, I used to ride to the station, take it on the train, and then ride the last two miles in London, and it was perfect). If I had to ride 4 or 5 miles, I would want something slightly less twitchy and with more gears (i.e., a Tern).

    • @RideandShineBicycling
      @RideandShineBicycling  2 года назад

      ...actual mountain.🤣So far I have limited the Brompton to shorter rides or use it as a vacation bike. It is pretty amazing you can quickly throw it in to the back of the car and be on your way. The ease of it to bring it inside your hotel room oppose to locking it up on a bike rack has taken the worry out of traveling. Thanks for the comment.

    Brompton is not the only foldable for aircraft. The Helix has 23” wheels and fits into airline approved checked baggage (62” overall dimensions - 157 cm). One nice thing about the Brompton with the rack is when collapsed you are not rolling around on the dirty tires when inside. Another on the Brompton is chain is covered by the other wheel so you will not come in contact with the dirty chain. Toolkit and spare tire in frame, etc.

    Besides my "LightweightM6LXBrompton" I also own a Makita, folding bike, with a similar fold as the Tern! Heavy, yes, but with two ordinary Makita 18 volt tool batteries as extra power. But when riding it's more easy, of course, with the extra help shown as LEDs on its handlebar, and to be adjusted to your present needs. Its two batteries doesn't last that long, so for longer distances, I would bring some extra!
    My Lightweight has presently reached 9 kilo, with a lot of expensive titanium parts bought from mostly China, which may be used also, but beware that Brompton changes part sizes at intervals, so a Chain tensioner isn't just one model!!

I do very long rides on both and I feel that my Tern has a better ride overall, but it was definitely not an entry level bike when new. It's lighter and the bigger wheels are more efficient. • @RideandShineBicycling
      @RideandShineBicycling  2 года назад +3

      Don't be ashamed! You are awesome to want to learn. This is why I do RUclips videos. I want to empower more people to get out and ride a bike. One of the videos I did was on how to ride a bike. She used a foldable bike to teach how to ride. One of the important points is that balance is more important than learning how to pedal. The bike she used had foldable pedals. So learning on a Brompton by folding up the pedals might work. Practice kicking off the ground and balancing. Being able to fold the wheels up I would think you definitely could learn on a Brompton. When you are ready for pedals then unfold them. You can see how she demonstrated this here. ruclips.net/video/oulYsTqCLn4/видео.html I will also ask a Brompton specialist this question too.

    • @RideandShineBicycling
      @RideandShineBicycling  2 года назад +2

      Here is what a Brompton specialist said:
      "Yes and no. The low frame and lower center of gravity are a plus, the livelier handling of the small wheels can be a minus. I'd say overall they're no worse and maybe a little better compared to a conventional bike." And another Brompton specialist said: "I have the same opinion. I would like to add that the convenience of being able to take the bike anywhere, and not worrying about locking it up is a plus for new riders."

    • @frankfurter7260
      @frankfurter7260 2 года назад +2

      No one should ever be ashamed of lacking a skill. The people that should be ashamed are those with abilities and opportunities who blow them off to watch RUclips videos instead. If you are in the US, REI teaches how to ride a bike class for adults and the class is highly rated.

    The Tern Verge X11 smokes any Brompton. If you want to do a proper premium comparison. For a 2k bike.
    Brompton will always be the best folder for portability. But not everyone needs to take a bike on a plane or bus.
    And with a bike like an X11 you can go as fast as a bus. So you won't need to worry about getting on one. My X11 averages 22mph. And I've hit 30mph on it in the right conditions. They call it light speed for a reason.

      yes, correct. But both of those units can be misleading as there are at least 2 "20-inch" and 2 "16-inch" tyre and rim sizes. Better to go with the unambiguous ISO (formerly ETRTO) numbers, which are 349 for the Brompton and 406 for the Tern (the other "20-inch" size is 451 and the other "16-inch" size is 305). The two "16-inch" sizes are mutually incompatible and a 305 tyre will not fit a 349 rim. The same goes for the two "20-inch" sizes

    Brompton is the bike to go for if you need 1) ultimate foldability; 2) ultimate portability; 3) great engineering; 4) well-integrated baggage options (the front block is essential for this); 5) excellent residual value (after 5 years, the average Brompton will have retained around 75-80% of its value, while the Tern will, essentially, be landfill). Also, it's worth noting that the Brompton has something of a fanatical following, so there are a lot of after-market parts and accessories available to improve weight, performance, looks etc. In short, the Brompton is the better option.
