too much leverage on that pin. If it goes the whole thing collapses in an instant

How to avoid that?

Don't load it vertically up against the wall of the pin. If it goes, it immediately introduces the slack built into the wall of rope.
The original vario s do not have this sort of pressure , because there is no vertical build up.
