@@EdisonDiesel paintball in ww1 and ww2 aircraft would be so cool, but probably wont happen for safety reasons.
Just have to make a lot of adjustments for having to lead the target a/c with your sights.... but the software to do that is probably almost freeware these days.
The first aerial engagements took place before even having mounted guns. Pilots went aloft with handguns and rifles and shot at each other with those.
They even threw stones!
..and they dropped spikes and hand grenades at ground troops

The thing is, a dedicated gunner in a WW1 plane, was not the best thing to go up against, at least in comparison to planes that come later circa WW2. While the two platforms are more or less as you describe, it is a different beast than say, a Ju 87 vs P-47.

In Battlefield 1, we're busy cursing at the pilot for flying like a pillock.
And I hear the NZ Air Force are hoping to upgrade their inventory to monoplanes by 2030.

At the end of WWI it was just shy of 15 years since the Wright Brothers first flight. And one of the brothers didn't even live to see WWI. The other lived past the end of WWII.
My grandfather was in exactly that place, gunner/observer in an RE 8!! I finally get a brief look at what it was like to do that! Thank you, Adam!

Hood Aerodrome Masterton New Zealand it is chilly in winter but oh so beautiful.
From the sounds of the accents he’s with New Zealanders so he might be flying over Middle Earth.

Reminds me of the _MythBusters_ experiment with car hood mounted machineguns. Accurate aiming was hard enough in two (and a bit of the third pitching up and down) dimensions.
Let"s not forget the SPAD 13 WW1 French fighter plane (powered by an Italian V8..!!!)..blue prints were sent to the USA and French pilots taught the first Americans future fighter pilots how to fly ..

@@Victor-uj8kz The French/Spanish builder of the different SPAD planes (13/17/21) engines the HISPANO-SUIZA V8 created different engines and power with the same block ,later allies like the USA/ENGLAND and Italy got to build them too under licensing ,It made me think that somehow it also became an Italian V8...!!!
The French taught us how to fly? We taught the world how to fly, when the Wright Brothers made the first flight at Kitty Hawk

I like the 1911 colt .45 made for pilots. Had an extended magazine and a cage for collecting the brass and not letting it fall back into the canvas.
"The RE8 is more stable" you mean it's a heavy slouch
Tracers are your friend as gunner, just follow them in to your target. A WWII B17 gunner told me that.
@@mr.thiemo1406 I thought they did for 8mm French. I could have been wrong though. .303 tracer 1915. .30-06 1917. Smoke trails were in 8mm French
I use that tactic in war thunder aswell, because it’s easier with lower tier planes (between the world wars)

Brave young men to go up & battle in those, they thought it better than the trenches
aviators allways was elite of troops.
My grandfather said that when they looked up from the mud of the trenches and saw these new-fangled aeroplanes overhead, the common opinion among the troops was "Too dangerous! You wouldn't get me up there."
They were daredevils. Most pilots died within their first few weeks of flying.

Has never been decided and it can not be. Both versions are possible and both have people swearing that they are the only ones that are right.
The Red Baron has assumed a hero status, however, from the people that were there, he was a viscous coward as he would only engage with inexperienced pilots.
@@martinmckowen1588 Not true. First of all, there was no way to pick out the rookies, they had enough trouble separating friend from foe. Second, one of then Lt. von Richthofen's fairly early victims was Major Lanoe Hawker VC, the British equivalent of Oswald Boelcke.

He also broke his own rules of engagement. Getting target fixation, flying too low while crossing over the enemy's front lines.

Even though it makes sense for those early years in plane development, I had no idea they were built of wood. Always assumed the envelopes were some light sheet metal. Even the propeller is wood.
And canvas with some hardener over it.
Propellers were wood much longer than the planes. The spitfires used wooden propellers

For contrast, Mr. Savage needs to jump into a air-to-air engagement with the latest fighters.
Maybe one from right after WWII. Air to air engagements aren’t too exciting or strenuous this day and age typically.
He would have to be the RIO... because I don't think he can fly.

The Fokker engine was wrong, they driven by rotary engines not radial ones.
This is an important detail because the radial engine doesn't have the spinning effect on the plane that a rotary engine does leading to massive differences in maneuverability.
A notable example of how rotary engines can change how a plane behaves is how the Whitworth camel turning right very quickly because of the rightward spin of the engine but turning left much slower.
Better it be radials. At least, no one is dying due to a mistake in piloting the plane. Also being easier to source...

Great video, but had to laugh every time you said fokker.
The RE8's pilot probably could have done more to even the odds. If you read accounts of some ww1 dogfights you'll see some observer planes "slipping" and "skidding" the plane from side to side to clear the tail for the gunner. Steep banks also pop up as a way to clear blindspots. If they were willing to be a bit daring the pilot could have done a lot more to give Adam a shot opportunity.
Ah a documentary abput the New Zealand air force, they are the only fighters they have ffs.

I am not a pilot by any means, but wouldn't a simple solution be to roll to one side whenever they were behind your tail out of visibility?
The opponent could follow that manoeuvre. Especially when he’s in a far more agile plane like the DR1
