Wow. Watching this in 2020 is just like forgetting your glasses.
Me too. wooohaaaa. time goes past. (2020-07-28).
2021 checking in.
June 2021 Checking in and it still made do a double take when I played the video
Bruh the way the screen is shaped he can make this into a #shorts and get at least a million views. Then expand the hobby even more.
@@jdmc9538 No one watches shorts
Great to come back to these older reviews. Man, Tom really is the real deal - reviewing games for 13+ years
Review is lovely as usual. I honestly think it's high time for me to add Dominion to my collection. Bo on a completely different note it's so nice to see how the channel started seeing a bit of an older video. I mostly saw all of your new content, so seeing your humble beginnings is very encouraging!
I like how he said that he would prefer Dominion to allow up to 5 to 6 players long before Intrigue came out. Haha
These shelves are my dream. :) Nice review.
Wow, I need to have this game, the idea behind expanding and customising your own deck in against enemy players is just awesome.
Which expansions do you have?
I ended up finding a copy of this in respectably good condition recently. All the cards were still sealed in their original wrapping. And it only cost $4AU! And did I forget to mention it was the first edition?
Totally agree.
I played this game just the last night the first time and I had some trouble understanding the rules, due' to the people trying to explain them to me, were talking with the in-game terms about the rules. This video cleared a lot more up to me.
Would you ever draw a copper from the draw pile? I can't figure out how this would happen? There's no "cost" for it.
Excellet review! Dominion is one of my favourites: simple, varied and always fun! =) The only downside of this game is that the basic game doesn't always have much interaction between players, but I think expansions are doing a great job to change that.
I just purchased Alchemy expansion, and I am SO looking forward to test it. ^^

My wife and I decided to break out Dominion to play tomorrow. Had to watch and leave a comment :)
@TripwireBeast keep in mind that Tom's speaking to people who may have never played the game. When you're doing that, it's probably best to speak in laymen's terms. "Dollars" instead of "Coppers" because you associate Dollars with making purchases. Decks instead of supply piles because everybody knows what a deck of cards looks like. He's trying to explain the game in uncomplicated terms rather than administer the rules.
we play with 5 players by adding 2 more kingdom card piles and ending the game when 4 are depleted. it works pretty well. also, to reduce wear and tear on the cards you can put them in sleeves. the cards won't fit in standard sleeves, but you can get special sized ones to fit. if you don't wan to spend the money you can always "pile" shuffle.
Most-watched Dice Tower review (as of November 28, 2016).
OMG I can't believe I just found this. I am about to play the Dominion Steam app version, and wanted to see what people think about it.
This just convinced me to this game. Thanks for the review!
I haven't experienced the problems you've experienced with the sleeves when I do an overhand shuffle. Perhaps down the road I'll be tempted to spend $3.60 for a 100 pack of sleeves as well if I get the same problems, but I've played several games of Dominion and haven't had any problems. Happy gaming!
@LittleBlackSparrow Here's the reply to what you were really asking. You don't really spend money. The Treasue cards (Copper, Silver, Gold) you play give you money to buy for. But then the Treasure cards go to your discard pile, which eventuelly will be shuffled into a new draw pile. So Treasure cards are never used up, they will be played again and again.
Yeah the base set comes with tons of different cards to play with but the real replay value comes from how many expansions there are to buy and all of the different cards available both in the base game and in all of the expansions, when i first found this a woman brought it to my college and had the base game and 2 expansions with her and i played for almost 7 hours and still had an itch to continue playing.
Militia makes each other player discard down to three cards in his hand. Playing a second Militia would not make your opponents discard additional cards.
Actually Militia requires 'discarding down to 3 cards' not 'discarding 2 cards'. It is still an effective strategy, but you'll need Smithy as well as Village cards.
@jovtheamazing One thing, the treasure card you get after trashing with mine goes back to your hand, so you don't lose that from your hand. And yes, it's supposed to keep decks clean and effective (copper-only decks are pretty bad, watched a friend of mine pull an 13 action combo today to end with only 11 coins to spend, 5 coppers which were everything he had and 6 bonus).
He talked about up to 25 decks in the box and how you can take certain ones out to modify gameplay.
I was wondering, does each deck have something that differentiates it from the other decks? Like unique artwork on the back or something, so you can divide the cards at end game. (I'm referring to the action cards, obviously)
There is a plastic insert that you can slide the cards in. Hope this helps :).
wow that tie :)
i played this game yesterday and for people who have never played it its a little complicated at first but as you go you start to understand how the game is played but other than that i think this is actually a pretty good game i would give it a 5 out of 5
Played it with 3 others at a game day, was a ton of fun, most games did end with the 6 point cards going.
It is so funny to me that this is an introduction to the genre of deck building games. Now, it feels like that is a well-established mechanic.
Even with all the expansions, there are 192 action cards. 192 C 10 = 14782231840815648, which pales in comparison to 10^80, the number of atoms in the universe.
Great stuff, would this be a must haveish game?
Yes, 100% a must have
Tom, please do another one for Intrigue.
IM hoping you can help identify a game, The cover had a black dragon on it.. It was a kinda orc vs human type deal, youd get these slates and youd slide each unit inside it they were unpainted and i believe the mat was kinda plasticy.. i know not alot to go on but damn.
Between Splendor and Dominion, which one would be your pick for a 4 member family? Thank you!
We love splendor. Our kids are 7 and 10
This game is indeed fun. One game had the gardens as one of the 10 decks. Another game got REALLY nasty with Thief AND Witch AND Throne Room.
The comment about the black borders needs to readdressed. I used to play Magic: The Gathering a decade ago and the basic set had white borders (Unlimited and Revised). If the borders are white, you won't see the wear, but you will instead see grime and dirt. Black borders might show some wear, but you never get the feeling that you have crud on your cards.
I prefer the black borders.
Just played for the first time this weekend. Great game, I'll be picking it up at my FLGS this week. Very easy to learn, tons of replayability. Some of the art and symbols could have been better (why are copper, silver and gold not colored copper, silver and gold??), but these are small quibbles, the game is well balanced and intuitive. Highly recommended.
In case you didn’t know, the 2nd edition of the game has updated artwork on those cards.
@@fightingkitchen7960 thanks! I have an entire shelf dedicated to Dominion and its expansions, but sadly nobody plays it anymore =/
@@NevTheDeranged Too bad. Hopefully that will change someday.
@@NevTheDeranged Oh, and you’re welcome!
@ntwynn We've tried this strategy under a variety of circumstances and card lay outs and it almost always works. The only times I was able to win was under extremely favorable card conditions or with a lot of luck. And the gold strategy requires absolutely no thought-just keep buying more valuable treasure cards then buy victory cards to end the game.
@jovtheamazing is there another way to get money? it sounds like everytime you buy money you loose money
This is an incredibly fun game! A must-have for your collection.
keep in mind that that's only the base game not including the mass amounts of expansion sets there are.
@fredmt8507 hhm well whenever we have a woodcutter out or any other card with an extra buy we usually pick up a copper if we can't affford/want anything else. Just how we play I guess.
Hey Tom man I love your reviews but I need to give my 2 cents on Dominion. My cousin and I have been playing it non stop for days now trying to understand it in and out. We've found that the game can be won with an almost 90% success rate by ONLY BUYING treasure/coins. In this strategy you buy nothing but coins, no action cards, and keep buying coins until you have enough gold cards to nab all the 6 point cards.
Dominion will always be the game that got me in to deck building. Love it!
Which are your favorite expressions?
@@fightingkitchen7960 prosperity, Adventurers and renaissance. You?
@@crazymeeples9199 I actually don’t have any. But if I were to get 6 & only 6, they might be Seaside (2nd edition), Prosperity (hopefully a 2nd edition), Adventures, Empires, Renaissance, & Menagerie.
But thank you for giving me your opinion though!
.... Now I want to play
Chancellor + Stash
Every one of my local gamers vowed to never play with those two cards on the table at once after a game with me. I literally got a Provence every turn after turn 3.
hey if you want to play more than 4 players why dont you just add in extra cards?
@ntwynn Ah, of course you're absolutely right about Militia. Not sure where you're reading, but I've never seen any experienced player suggest "embracing" it. Yes they acknowledge that the Big Money gambit will beat a complete newcomer, but there are dozens and dozens of well explained examples of how to always beat such a simple minded approach. Every discussion I've seen suggests that discovering what you have is necessary part of the learning curve… nothing more.
@drOffset yeah dosent really matter its still awesome
@SuperSimmel You mean sleeves?
*Thanks.This game is awesome!*
@Valdinsh You're paying $60-$70 for sleeves? Are these gold plated, titanium sleeves? That's a ridiculous price you're paying for 15 packs of sleeves. Also, you should be able to get Dominion and its expansions for around $30-$35 a piece.
@f0zzyguy If you *ever* deplete the copper pile (barring maybe a many-player game with the Ambassador), you are probably doing it wrong.
@Valdinsh The game gets repetitive because you remember the cards and they come up again? I'm not sure if you're playing with only one combination of the 10 decks of action cards, but I've found that my strategies, pace, duration, and number of cards in my final deck vary greatly from game to game based on the deck combinations. I don't have either expansion yet and haven't needed them to cure boredom. Show me a person with one way of playing, and I'll show you a person who should lose often.
It's actually 25 choose 10, or 3,268,760 combinations.
That doesn't actually work. Militia forces your opponent to reduce his hand to 3 cards. Once you've played militia on your turn, playing it again has no effect, and your opponent's hand remains at 3 cards.
@LittleBlackSparrow The mine will increase your coin's value: playing the Mine makes a copper into a silver (but you trash the copper) and makes a silver into a gold (but you trash the silver). In this way, you aren't "spending" money to make more... But you are spending an action and loosing a good coin from your hand.
It could be argued that too much copper is a bad thing to your hand (it's better to have one card that has the buying power for three cards). Starting to make sense?
@f0zzyguy This is a common and understandable mistake by beginners, but in the vast majority of games, it would be better to buy nothing than to add an additional Copper to your deck. Every Copper in your deck gives you one more chance to not draw Gold.
If there are ANY Star trek: Deep Space Nine fans who just watched this review I'm sure you agree with me that it's an amazingly weird and crazy coincidence that there's a game called DOMINION and that it's made by a company called RIO GRANDE... wow... sometimes I don't understand the world...
@GuitarzLover trust me its not when you get going
Have you ever played Agricola?
you have never seen a money pile depleted? we seem to to that with copper's almost every game, but we don't end it there, we only end the game if the 6pt victory card pile is gone or 3 of the action card piles are gone! Other wise its game on!
i love this game i dont own it but my cuzins do and thats what we play every time im there
Great rez
@luidavinci yeah
Buy card game sleeves in dominion size if you are afraid of wear.
Then the cards won't fit back in to the insert
@@moniqueaarts1264 then buy custom inserts
@@moniqueaarts1264 They actually do. Except the money & curse cards but very few didn’t fit. (6 gold, 5 curses, about 18 copper, & 8 or 9 silver.
@jbtvs If you had an action card that gave you another buy, then you could buy a card with all your money, and then on your second buy you could take a copper for free.
where is duel of ages review?
Ugh Big money is the easiest to stop...
Amazing how people keep insisting that it's overpowered.
@danteism Militia causes the target to discard down to 3 cards and nothing more. It does NOT read "discard 2 cards". Your example is flawed. However I get what your saying. Most experienced players I've read online have long since acknowledged the issue with treasure cards and advise embracing it but playing it better than the other guy. I just feel it's boring and cheap. It was also disheartening to see it in action on my third day of playing. Defeating really.
The comment that he makes in the very end that this game is not playable with more than 4 player as if you have for instance a extension like Dominion Intrigue you can set up a game for 5 - 6 player be adding the number of victory points in the game. The rules explain how that is done.
I wonder if his opinion has changed since he made this video
And I'm sure he's proud of it. :-)
@ntwynn I've read that other people have this problem and apparently the expansions have addressed this which is fine. But as far as I'm concerned this game is now ruined for me and I honestly feel I've wasted my money. I want to put this on here because many people, like I, will have buy this game based off your review. So I tell you now Dominion in it's original form is BROKEN. And when you realize this it'll deflate all the fun out of the game.
@LittleBlackSparrow Let's say you draw your hand, and you have three treasure cards; they are all coppers and only worth a total of three coin. Your buying power is limited there. But if you have pulled a gold card, which is three coins in one card, then you can see that it's worth the six coin to buy it.
Of course, it's a tastier treat to be gobbled up by a thief.
The comment that he makes in the very end that this game is not playable with more than 4 player is not entirely true as if you have for instance a extension like Dominion Intrigue you can set up a game for 5 - 6 player be adding the number of victory points in the game. The rules explain how that is done.
240p lol
I wish this was like the expansion review
let me get this straight... you have to pay 6 coins in order to get 3 coins?
Yup!
There's tons of online shops for this kind of games... google this game and you'll know what I mean...
Awesome counter obs, white boards are disgusting indeed.
Broken ? Yeah sure, because you know all the cards and tactics after only several playthroughs, like in all games.
Enjoy monopoly.
This game has a lot going on and if you don't give it a good run, you're missing out.
@ntwynn I'd love to be proven wrong but too many people have had this issue. And we've tested against too many game set ups. Dominion is broken and I would strongly suggest people NOT buy it. Seriously...30$ down the tube.
Well, I heard that the later expansions push back against that strategy. I hope they are right!
I haven’t got any expansions yet
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
999th thumbs up.
I was avoiding this game because it seemed too similar to CCGs (and I despise collectible card games), but after seeing this review, I've decided that I have no interest in this game because of completely DIFFERENT reasons! I am not a fan of games in which you have TOO many choices on your turn. It seems like the kind of game where selecting one "bad" card can hose you... And some of those "take that" style cards are just hugely annoying. Anyway, thanks for the review.
Ther aren’t too many choices on your turn, Dominion is one of those games where it looks intimidating, but is actually not heavy. Kids as young as 8 can play this, even non-gamers, they can quickly grasp it.
Each & turn doesn’t have a lot of choices, once you have a plan (like which cards to buy), turns can go VERY quickly.
Plus, if you don’t like attack cards, then don’t play them, there are a LOT more non-confrontational cards than confrontational cards.
NERD NERD NERD NERD NERD NERD!!!
lebron traveled
@Drakethatsme Stone age is probably better.
I have to be honest - I just don't see a lot of gameplay there.
But it is fun, & there are a LOT of expansions that each add something new!
It amuses me that he keeps talking about dollars to spend in the game... Americans... ;)
I agree I found that too annoying to follow the rest of the video
AlfaKicker Agreed and I'm American.
awkward moment when I think this is going to be League of Legends content. awkies...
world of tankas the card game in another clothes? Played it and this types of games is nothing for me.
