I have a very hyper 1.5 YO whippet. I have food puzzles and a slow feed bowl. I feel like anything that helps him slow down is probably a good thing. I was going to get a snuffle mat, but... he is a very bad scavenger outside. Do you think snuffle mats would be good, or would it just potentially promote more scavenging, which I don't want.

xray606 Hey! Thanks for watching! On the days that you have limited time, using food toys or snuffle mats are great. Because it’s contextual, it shouldn’t carry over to his behavior with scavenging on walks. However, an even better way to use meals/food in general is to do daily training that helps your whippet develop social and emotional skills. For example, I look at my dogs and write down times where they seem to struggle to respond to well established cues or where they seem to exhibit behavioral patterns related to high stress or over-arousal: wildlife, toys, sounds, other dogs are a few examples. Use food in combination with these scenarios and you might find that he becomes more proficient at putting all his energy to good use. Thanks again for watching. Keep me posted on your training. Best, Alyssa Rose
