I think gossip is "a girl thing" in that it mostly gets called gossip only when women are doing it. If men are doing it, then no one says they're gossiping--they're just talking.

@Priscila Miramontes I disagree. It's not considered spreading rumors. It's still gossip. Men are the biggest gossips on earth. They share most everything with their friends. They just don't consider it the same way we do. It's not characterized the same way. Spreading rumors still has the same negative connotation between guys as with women.

Sierra this is the first time I’ve disagreed with your hot take. 😱 As a public school teacher, I think there needs to be a line. Many parents have no discretion or are absent. Not only that, but I don’t see our schools’ dress code as coming “from the government”. It is made by the board, which is an elected group of community members, typically parents. Obvi the gender bias with dress codes is terrible, though!
As always, love the podcast. Perfect start to a week. ☺️💜

Years ago I helped a uniform company measure all of the children in the Washington DC public school system elementary and middle schools. The reasoning behind switching all the children to uniforms was to even out the playing field. There were many incidents of children being harassed and bullied because of a clothing that they were wearing. It was also a socioeconomical issue where some children had and some children did not have. Stydents were assaulted for shoes or pieces of clothing. The intention for transitioning the children to uniforms was that everyone would be seen as equals and level out the playing field and it would cut back on distractions. Last thing sorry this is so long.
    * I was measuring a little Girl for her uniform and she just barely fit into the largest size that we carried. She looked at me and said ... I know I'm fat. I died a little inside. I looked at her, put my arm around her shoulders and said you are perfect and you don't let anyone tell you different. * We worked with so many schools and so many students. It was a very interesting job and I wouldn't change a thing.
As for dress codes. I don't see a problem. By the time you are in high school you know the rules.

Definitely agree with Skylar on the dress code thing! I understand that “the government telling you what to wear” is strange, but like Skylar said, they are minors and not everyone’s parents are going to be there to put appropriate guidelines in. Obviously how strict dress codes are is a whole different story, and maybe they are too strict, that’s a different topic :) . I think another way of looking at it is letting kids express themselves within professional guidelines. If I show up to work in a crop top with a skirt higher than mid thigh it would be considered inappropriate and I was able to learn this dynamic from knowing dress codes in school. Having a dress code to keep the boys focused isn’t a good reason, but rather for children and teens to learn to express themselves appropriately. I also think they need to draw the line somewhere because kids can’t show up in the nude 😂

Meanwhile my high school dress code was that you must have shoes on your feet. Flip flops were pretty standard. Anything was ok as far as clothes went. Of course, it was at the end of the hippie era. In grade school girls could not wear pants. We had to wear dresses/skirts.

I really enjoyed the talk on uniforms in publis schools. I'm a high school teacher and I work in a public school with 12-14 year olds. They do have an uniform (quite cheap and we give it to students that can't pay for it and it'sgender neutral). For us is a way to recognise them outside school, or for them to identify each other and we look at it like "they're all equal". Like, no one gets to brag about that very expensive item their parents bought them in front of students that can't afford it, and no one gets to feel bad for having less cute clothes. It's something we discuss every year and we never all agree. It's a difficult topic.

Speaking as a tenth grader living in germany and going to a german highschool, where we don't have any kind of a dresscode in school, I don't know any case where this not-having-any-dresscode was a problem, so I don't get the problem in the United States. I think it's your and your parent's decison what you wear and in my opinion it's the most important whether you feel comfortable or not. Anybody should just mind their own businesses and I hardly don't know any teacher that really cares about the outfit a student wear. We talked in our English class about the dresscode of american highschools and we all came to the conclusion that as long as you don't come naked, everything is fine.
    Greetings from Bavaria 🥰

Some people in the US appear to be a lot more inclined to wear essentially nothing/everything being way too see through because they think it’s cute or they want attention- I personally think it would be really uncomfortable to walk around in a school (as a student - in some ways being associated with these people) with someone who is essentially naked. I think it’s just a difference in cultures and what would be considered acceptable by some individuals who may not have a parent who really pays them much attention
Either way it’s interesting to hear your situation and I hope you have a nice day!

    • @thueiiral
      @thueiiral 4 года назад +5

Don't you think that maybe having such strict dress codes is feeding in to the teens rebellion against rules, and maybe that's one of the reasons why they dress provocatively if given the chance? In my country we also don't have dress codes and there are no problems. I mean, if you came to school showing your genitalia, sure, the teachers would give you a scolding and a phone call to your parents. But that would be just embarrasing for the student, and not seen as "rebellion against school rules". I don't think hardly anyone would think it was cool. Although, I must admit that climate might also play a role in this. It is so cold here in northern Europe that we don't often have such weather that coming in a bikini in to school would be an option... But I've seen a lot of crop tops in school, and there's nothing wrong with showing a little skin. Mostly, teens just want to dress stylishly.

My high school had a dress code that I mostly disagreed with, but I do agree with the dress code banning drug and gang paraphernalia.

Also, as you’ve stated many times, high school is the most crucial part of ones life where they may be the most insecure and have problems with body image. Those fashion “rules” you recently broke, are still drilled into young minds so if the smaller girls are flaunting crop tops and booty shorts, don’t you think the girls that aren’t the same size will feel even worse about themselves? My bfs sister cried for days when they gave her boy PE shorts bc she couldn’t wear the short PE shorts bc her thighs would rub too much and she was in pain. She always feels different from the others and you know how that can affect someone.

Even though a public school is through the government, each school and each district have different rules so you can't necessarily say that it's the government control in that regard. Rules are usually set up in place after a problem has occurred so it doesn't happen again and that's why I believe the rules are there, and when a school uses the excuse that the teachers are uncomfortable, I don't think they are saying the right thing. I believe if a school has rules like no pajamas, they are trying to make their students not lazy, essentially. School is a place to learn, it's not the mall, it's not a social hang out, it's not your bedroom.

I agree with Skylar in terms of high school dress codes. I'm 24 and I went to a high school with no dress code. Students came to school looking like they were going to Coachella which I don't feel is okay. I also think dress codes help prevent bullying in schools! Love you girls!! :) :)

My teacher said that I “look like Khloe Kardashian”, so yes, it’s trendy! 😂 she literally complimented me and told me I looked cool and they were dance team sweatpants that were huge on me and the drawstring was workin HARD!

But eventually she learned to nap in her crib and I learned how to wear her and do chores at the same time.

I so agree with Sierra! The government has no business telling women what to wear. It perpetuates this idea of women needing to cover themselves up in order to not "distract" men or "provoke" men. Dress code does not prepare people for adult life what so ever. I work in an engineering firm and everyone wears jeans/shorts and old t shirts. Sweat pants would be a ok.

I totally agree with Sierra on the topic of clothingrules at school. I'm from the Netherlands and we don't have any clothingrules in high school. Everyone can wear what they want. Most of the time the children wearing jeans And shirts/ blouses. Nothing crazy. I think that it is the parents responsibility to watch after their children and guide them in appropriate clothing choices.

Especially the discussion on whether or not something is actually "guilty" and what determines it.Your point about how reality TV isn't very relatable sometimes - I feel like I now turn to RUclips/vlogs (like Sierra's) to fill that watching desire in my life of people who are just like me. Also I know you have enough content going on but I would love to follow a Sierra Schultzzie Inc. profile on Spotify! I think it'd be so fun to have like a "Sierra's Bubblegum Pop" and "Skylar's Fave Broadway Tunes" and maybe even a husband feature or "Schultzzie Inc.'s Team work day bops" :) Just an idea! Love you both and thanks for being such a bright spot in the world!

Regarding uniforms I found your opinion interesting, as a teacher, I never thought of it in the way of the government telling who can wear what. I grew up in a state with uniforms and now teach in a state without uniforms.
The argument I was took for uniforms, especially middle and high, was it’s one less things to worry about. Students aren’t worrying about labels, being on trend and name brands, or maybe someone only has enough clothes for a few days and repeatedly wear the same thing. Rather than a control factor it takes away from some bullying/judgement/popularity issues. We could only wear black of khaki pants with a polo. Not fashionable lol but it was one less thing to worry about as a middle / high schooler.
