Man, I remember sitting in my living room with my good homie and watching this video for the first time in 2006. We were in 7th grade, and our eyes widened as we became enamored with the genuine coolness of the Ghetto Talkbox. Over the summer, we made one and had a blast. God speed, Moot Booxle.
Anyone else absolutely love that this is still here? This is like the RUclips archives dude! Made my day. I remember seeing this also way back when and I appreciate it even more now. I mean, the video quality is lower but the editing and instruction was so well done. Simple and clear! You go Moot!!
Golden age of youtube. Just a guy sharing a tutorial about a hobby he enjoys. Not ads, no sponsorships, no e celebrities or asking to subscribe. Just a guy sharing his passion. Much love brother.
Thank you!! I was one of the OGs of musical RUclips. The first to go viral with a synthesizer video. It was such a different world back then and I believe it’s an angle that is sorely missing from today’s music tech landscape. When I get my health back on track I’m gonna be back to doing that too. Old school. Thank you so much! 🙏
Thank you all for your incredibly original insight into how I looked reminiscent of Ashton Kutcher in this video. Certainly no one over the course of the last 8 years has made such an observation. Give yourself a hand, you original thinker, you.
DUDE THIS VIDEO STILL EXISTS. For some reason, I thought about talk boxes again for the first time since high school. I remember using this video to try to cobble together one over summer vacation like christ...a decade ago? RUclips was a much purer place back then. It was also like 3 RUclips accounts ago. Glad to see you're still kickin, man.
This is honestly one of the best RUclips videos of 2006. It's funny to say it, but I mean it. It's a good process video, and it's informative, fairly well produced, and entertaining. This is what RUclips is all about: everyday people making and sharing videos.
In my opinion, this is the best d.i.y / music-fan video I EVER seen, seen it when it came out now watching this 10 years later, dude, you are a GENIUS! i swear. please do more of these vids?? greatings from aHUGE FAN :)
Thank you very much! I would do more but I don't really have too many ideas! I have built a couple of pedals I could show I guess. I am working on a video of Hammond organ mods I did though!
Definitely. I have a small collection of synths (Yamaha SY35, Sequential Circuits Split 8, Yamaha DX 7, Korg MS2000, and a small Roland JV-1010, and a Yamaha-TX7) that I've collected over the years. Unfortunately, my health took a huge nosedive and I ended unable to continue building that dream studio. Everything goes to medical bills now and all my equipment is showing it's age. Equipment is needing to get replaced and maintained that I just don't have the cash to maintain any more. I'm hoping things are going to turn around in the future though. I'm dreaming of shoving a modular in there. I saw your studio and salivated. Haha! It looks like you have a really nice setup!
+BlackburnBigdragon You have a really nice collection of different equipment. Life does tend to get in the way sometimes and decisions can be tough. I sold all my equipment and have one bundle left: a Roland SP-700 connected to a SCSI rack case with CD-ROM and SyQuest 44. I had to replace a SCSI connector and after it's gone then everything is digital.
I've gone digital for a huge chunk of my stuff nowadays too. The drawback I've run into with going digital has been that every time I've upgraded my PC, I've lost the use of various software that I've used to work on my music. There are songs that I produced 8-10 years ago that I can no longer go back and even edit or work on any more. If I want to re-record them, I have to re-do them from scratch now. Same thing with music hardware designed to work on the PC. Often, companies just make the hardware and the driver for the operating system at the time and then they're done with it and don't update the driver after that which doesn't help if you update your system a few years later and their driver doesn't work. I've been burned by three external midi interfaces and an external sound card where that happened.
Wooooow. I'm seeing this video 14 years later in 2021. A genius then and still a musical genius now. It almost look like a visual filter thatbis used today Moot. I'm going to build this. I had those same speakers back in 1998 when it came with a new Gateway computer. They did sound nice. I see them in thrift stores every once in a while. I'm going to pick them up the next time I see them. Thank you for posting this back then. 👍👍👍👍👍
Angry Canadian Thank you for that comment. It has encouraged me! It came at a time when I’m really feeling inspired to try to make RUclips more of a part of my life. I’ve had a lot of health problems in the past that have kept me from being able to be consistent. I lost all my momentum more than once. I’ve had three viral videos! It’s really a shame that I haven’t capitalized on that success. Never too late!!
I was looking everywhere for this video since I first saw it back when you uploaded it. The first one I was attempting to make came from the inspiration of this video. Now that I am in a position where I can do my own DIY without pissing off my mother, I can finally start making things I always wanted to. So thank you for igniting that spark in me all those years ago, means a lot to me.
I just watched Woochia’s new tutorial on Vocoder vs Talkbox vs Auto-Tune, and stopped by to make sure this certified classic had aged well. 😸 Your speaker dismantling music is even in stereo! 👍 Shout out to Moot Booxlé, the one O.G. RUclipsr who I’ve managed to keep tabs on, 15 years later. Be well and long may you funk, brother!
My friend, I appreciate you sticking around all these years! It has been a struggle to stay on top of things enough to keep putting out content, but I keep squeezing it in whenever I can. Thanks so much crnkmnky!
saw your face in the behringer synth videos an immediately remember THIS video when i started making music in 2006. so i found out what a talkbox is. found this video on this new youtube thing and loved the idea of the video and had to do it myself but knew shit about anything. first time building some cheap diy music gear. my g-talkbox was a completley disaster and won't really work, but i loved doing this stuff. 5 years later i bought a real talkbox from money i made with music, lol. back then it was mindblowing for me to realize, that i can find free videos on the internet to learn making music...
That is the best information I have ever gotten on RUclips before... you are now my new favorite user. Now I am going to put you video on favorites and my video play-list.
Mootbooxle. Fine job young man! Love watching intelligent people do techie stuff. You are a perfect instructor! I was looking at some old Alvino Rey and Pete Drake music. The talk box is one of those weird inventions that became popular and useful. The Ghetto Talk Box rocks!
Awesome as hell, not only creative and resourceful, but your speaking skills are really good, you should have no problem in the corporate world or in the entertainment field.
Man you young cats never cease to amaze me! I appreciate that for real man. I was about to go out and spend a 100 on a talk box. Thanks for saving me 93! Keep doing what you do. Much success to you in the future. Peace H
Thanks for the video. This is exactly the kind of thing I was thinking about. I realize that the video is old, but nowadays you might be able to 3D print a new grill for the speaker that you can connect the tube to without even taking the speaker apart.
This is awesome. I once made a talkbox by caulking a large funnel over the speaker of an old guitar amp, and running a hose from the end of the funnel. It worked pretty well
Ooh, I like this tip. I never finished this project because I didn't have the nerve to dismantle the lousy desktop speakers I got from Goodwill. I think I'm ready to try again. Maybe it'll be a hybrid between your design and Moot's. 😄
Yep I was influenced by this video, and I sure thousands like me built their own Talk-Box. I purchased a quality horn speaker and furnished a DIY casing. All in all I think I spent 40 dollars total which resulted in a talk-box I've used for live gigs for years. It's in my garage now buried under years of memories. Watching this video again after all these years makes me want to dig it out and play with it again.
Well done mate! For 6 bucks and an hour to spare, who wouldnt want to give this a go! Brilliant. I know what im gonna be doing next weekend. Thanks for the ideas.
Dude!!! This is AWESOME!!!!!! The playing around at the end was really sweet too!!! Next time the editing can be tighter by cutting out unnecessary footage like unscrewing the speakers, bending the corners etc.. Anyway, over all cool video!! I may make one of these some time!

@MegaJaybee yup! It's actually a DeArmond S73-12. I have the 6-string S73 as well. They are really nice guitars for the money. I kinda like it better than the Gibson SGs!
dude seriously, ignore what everyone has said. this is a great video, and this is a really smart way to make a talk box, no matter how ghetto it is. nice video bro. :)
GENIUS!!!!!! LOL!!!!!! I'm planning a homemade talkbox myself but it'll be a lot more compact and pretty. This, however is sheer genius with the simplicity. Props.

@gteaz The problem with that method is that there isnt an airtight seal around the speaker, which is necessary for a decent loud sound to come out the tubing.

This is awesome. I realized you could make one fairly cheap, so i was looking through a few ideas. This video is 17 years old?! Lol great job. ...dilated what??😂
i made sort of a miniature talk box using a small speaker I got from a pair of headphones and I housed it in a cheap watch that i gutted out. I hooked it up to my ipod and use the irockguitar app and it works great!
The premise of this is totally solid. I'd probably put the whole thing in a nice project box and use some sort of sealant instead of duct tape, but that would still only make it cost like $12. Sweet.
@Lopaxe i think you just move lips and tounge as well blocking and unblocking your throat. i dont know if you are familiar with the jews harp but it is a small metal instrument that doesnt make sound on its own but creates a vibration and allows you to use your mouth as an amp and change the pitch by making the amount of space in your mouth smaller or lager. the same concept works here except the synth and speaker make the pitch and you use your mouth to shape it into words
@WiiGamerof1995 if you have a guitar/bass amp that has headphone output, you would plug it into there. Otherwise I don't know. You do need a 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch adapter for the speakers cord just incase you didnt catch that part.
This was LITERALLY the first video I ever watched on RUclips. I was 11-my dad and I built the talkbox. Thanks for the memories!
that’s amazing! Thank you for sharing that!

+mootbooxle Hey man, consider yourself lucky, chicks dig Ashton Kutcher. You're not ugly, that's for sure.
Jimmy Rodriguez
Hey, thanks Jimmy. That was cool of you to say. :)
+mootbooxle No problem, dude. You're videos are pretty good. Do what you do.

This definitely has a late 70's, early 80's vibe to it, and I love it.

I'm a RUclips OG!
Holy crap
The first minute of this video is like lost footage of a Lynyrd Skynyrd member nobody knew about
Its so cool that this dude is still active to this day
Moot B. The original O.G. RUclips hero.
seen this video in like 2008... been looking for it since... thanks for the tutorial
AliasReefah damn then u fucking suck
Damn, Brandon could use some anger management.
your kids will watch this and think of the today like when we watch recordings from the 70's
did you have a lobotomy done?
I love that studio setup you have and I would KILL to own a setup like that!
That's more than $6

Yeah, I was thinking that the whole time I bought the parts for my first talkbox...they probably think I'm building a bong!
This came out a couple months after i did 🤣

@MegaJaybee yup! It's actually a DeArmond S73-12. I have the 6-string S73 as well. They are really nice guitars for the money. I kinda like it better than the Gibson SGs!
a colleague is building one (for guitar) and is giving me some advise for me to build one for a synth.

Amazing how a "ghetto" home project can generate such a cool sound. Awesome man!
GENIUS!!!!!! LOL!!!!!! I'm planning a homemade talkbox myself but it'll be a lot more compact and pretty. This, however is sheer genius with the simplicity.
Props.
Hey, Derek. I love your playing with the Allman Bros., man!
That's a great idea, man. And you are musically very talented. Don't worry about the crude remarks that some of these idiots make. It just shows how miserable they really are by needing to cut down other people. ROCK ON, MAN!
@gteaz The problem with that method is that there isnt an airtight seal around the speaker, which is necessary for a decent loud sound to come out the tubing.
@MultiAirGunner Vou have to use a microphone. the signal flow is as follows instrument -> talkbox -> oral cavity as resonant cavity ->microphone -> p.a , seperate amp or recording device. This is a very simple, basic talkbox, not a rocktron banshee II, which can be used like a normal guitar effect but costs 250 bucks.
Here I am 16 years later, still showing this to my little cousins. Everyone must know how these work
Thank you for your service! 😎
@aspirep yeah it will work with vsts ..ive done it its just a little more tricky
Very clear explanation, very encouraging talk. You just want to get those things and make one! I have a mid-range driver here at home...so...I'm starting right now! Congratulations...and keep up the good work, kid!!! :-)
This is awesome. I realized you could make one fairly cheap, so i was looking through a few ideas. This video is 17 years old?!
Lol great job. ...dilated what??😂
I don't know what that whole disclaimer was about at the beginning of this video but this is genius!
i made sort of a miniature talk box using a small speaker I got from a pair of headphones and I housed it in a cheap watch that i gutted out. I hooked it up to my ipod and use the irockguitar app and it works great!
this was the most important video of my childhood.
I remember watching this back in the day
The premise of this is totally solid.

@TrueSouthernPride Hey, thanks. It's a DeArmond S73-12. I have the 6-string S73 as well. They are really nice guitars for the money.
@WiiGamerof1995 if you have a guitar/bass amp that has headphone output, you would plug it into there. Otherwise I don't know. You do need a 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch adapter for the speakers cord just incase you didnt catch that part.
You can use whatever you like, as long as it has an audio output.
dude that was tight and cheap ... you are the bomb 4 real thanks for this vid im gunna def try and see if i can get those cali sounds thats again ...
@DNAUFIERO I don't have a drill!! I used flame and some tools to make a hole! By the way if you use a drill it has chances of cracking!!
dude that is a gnarly setup you have there
@shubbbbby word up! thank you. You can def use this with a guitar.
