Mr Beans Holiday is by far my favourite of all the performances. It’s not just a good Mr Bean film I think it’s a genuinely great film in its own right and has a lot of heart.
I actually like Bean's Holiday more. Mostly due to it not relying on so many recycled gags from the show. And the secondary and tertiary plots are pretty nice too.
I know a lot of people are going to tell this. But the audience was real it was never a laughter track. British television has a long history of recording in front of live studio audiences.

Rowan is a national treasure over here in the UK. I watched Mr Bean as a kid, and now we’re introducing him to our own daughter. The Mr Bean Christmas special is still a hilarious favourite in our house. But I also love Blackadder: the fourth series on its own is one of the greatest British comedies ever made, and Edmund Blackadder is so far removed from the Mr Bean character that it makes it all the more funny. So glad he’s still going, we love you Rowan! 💖
I feel Johnny English was incredibly underrated at the time. It's basically, what if Inspector Clouseau was James Bond. The film's weren't perfect, but they didn't deserve the critical panning they got at the time

I heard a description of how it is and it's kind of scummy. It basically sounds like they paid him to do some appearances and then everything else is someone else and it's run by someone else.
The Mr. Bean RUclips channel has the original episodes uploaded (albeit several times and in snippets occasionally) but they do have the full length original ones, so it's still worth browsing if you haven't seen them before
I've taught ESL for over 15 years and I love using clips of Mr. Bean. Because 1 the kids love it and 2 the humor is so universal you can use it as a starting point to create conversations with the students about what they saw.
I was the first of my friends to discover Mr. Bean on PBS as a kid. By the end of the summer, everyone in the neighborhood was watching it. It's rare to find shows in which both kids and parents can equally enjoy.

I do that too! Christmas morning I'm jumping and running around in circles. Every time I see a nativity scene, I just have to get my hands on it. When out on a date walking around, I dance next to a busker for change, I whip out my credit card to show the rest of the store what I've got. In restaurants, I've flicked many napkins before elegantly placing it in my lap. Cleaned fingernails with my zipper in public. Danced as if I were at Club Phut. I could go on. It explains why I'm fun to be around, never married, and completely happy because (like Mr Bean) I don't care what people I don't know think of me.
9:23 I might be alone in this but I do think that the lough track helped a ton in making Mr Bean more widespread. What makes Mr Bean popular is it's simplicity, taking away the lough track and replacing it with music would make it feel more sophisticated and cultured which may make people who's not part of that culture feel out of place or even threatened by it
Bean's Holiday is a total classic, I can believe that the movie wasn't so popular in the states but the movie is Universal viewing in the U.K., You'd be very hard pressed to find someone who hasn't seen it. I don't think you've given that movie the credit it deserves in this review...
The moment in the Mr Bean movie when he reveals whistlers mother has been destroyed and Peter McNicols reaction is one of my top 5 movie moments of all time. It's pitch perfect. I still laugh really really hard. They are both perfect in that scene. 😂😅

Great phrase, "best kind of stupid"! Reminds of of how silly we humans can be. There's "stupidly smart", and then there's "smartly stupid". There's a difference.
Sadly Johnny English never lived to it's potential. It has some highlights so here's my favorite scenes from each movie. 1) The Hospital Scene from first movie showing how effective Johnny can be in the right place. 2) Chase Scene in second movie. Pure Atkinson awesomeness and most badass spy scene ever. 3) Training scene at the beginning of the third movie. It shows probably best part of main character personality. He is supportive and confident mentor willing to teach kids some unusual thought process.

Its not only the marketing, its used as the subtitle of the movie. I have my VHS and that line appears on all the logos for it, also in the movie poster when it released (thats why im surprised when Hat's off only said it was claled BEAN in the video). I dont know if that subtitle depends of the country or not. The spanish version uses it as the full name of the movie (just translated into spanish of course).
In a different universe I like to think there is a movie crossover where Ernest P. Worrell and Mr. Bean end up as neighbors who solve a murder mystery of some kind.

I was introduced to Mr. Bean in the early 90s as a teenager. My local PBS affiliate out of Richmond, Virginia would play the episodes late on Saturday Nights with The Red Green Show and Doctor Who. What time to be alive!
I prefer the Holiday movie over the first for the fact that there isn't an overabundance of dialogue. I think a whole lot of dialogue takes away from the mystique of the character, and the world he is in. Personal opinion of course. I do love the first movie and it does have some great scenes but it didn't feel like Mr. Bean completely just felt like a different movie that they dropped Bean into
I wouldn't say that he's a 100% silent character. Sure, his physical comedy and exaggerated expressions speak for themselves, but it just wouldn't be Mr. Bean without his usual grunts, mumbles, and occasional full words punctuating some of his best bits. The cartoon I'm 50/50 about. It's not bad, but it really just feels like a hat on a hat. You have essentially a live action cartoon character, and even if he did act things out for the animators to animate, the fact that it IS a cartoon series just feels a bit redundant. That said, I do respect him feeling he's too old and not as able to perform as much physical comedy, preferring a cartoon series or movie instead.
Sometimes when he does manage to open his mouth and let out a couple words, I actually find it just as funny as his more physical stuff. I never fail to laugh at the Christmas episode where he hangs up his stockings, only to get another stocking inside and mutter "Ah. Christmas Socks." And of course the time he went to church and confusingly and lacking any rhythm squawks "HALLEHLUULIA" during the hymn just always busts me up.
I guess they need to compensate for the disconnect from the rigidity of live action to the anything goes animated world. I give them all the credit for trying to keep that wackiness in a wackier format. They certainly translated it quite well, and the cartoon is entertaining in its own right. They know that they can't quite capture the cartoonish man in a real world setting in cartoon form, so they have to exaggerate in other areas. I did enjoy what I've seen in the cartoon, but it doesn't quite compare to the live series.
I much prefer the second Bean film because it focuses on him more. I find it weird that you say there's no straight man character, when he travels on and off with two other people. If anything there are more straight man characters for him to play off.
I feel it's much more in the vain of the original sketch format too, since having him travel to different places to meet different people throughout the course of the film is almost like writing it as simply, a bunch of sketches playing after each other
Mr Bean's Holiday was closer to the series format, as it was a series of sketches linked with a single narrative thread. The sketches never had scenes without Bean present.
I'm an English teacher in Vietnam. I cannot tell you how happy the younger students I teach get when I told them that we're going to be watching some Mr. Bean. even the older kids, they might not want to watch the Mr Bean cartoon, but they're still going to laugh
I’m a teacher of languages too . And I always show my bean since there’s little to no dialogue I can adapt it to all my students. It still makes them laugh.
A while ago, I read a comment on how Rowan can retire the character with a neat little sendoff. The comment said it should incorporate the age argument by having Mr. Bean in a retirement home, bored. He then gets up and starts committing some shenanigans like he usually did. I find that a very good sendoff idea if it ever happens.
Growing up, it was a treat that I was allowed to stay up late to watch Bean on PBS. While I appreciate the cartoon & his other ventures, the originals are the really the only Bean for me!
I loved Mr. Bean back in the 90's. I watched it at every opportunity on CBC in Canada. One of my favorite all time shows - it's not only funny but relaxing too lol, if that makes any sense. like the laugh tracks on old time shows, it never bothered me. To me it would just seem eerie without it. I remember one particular year they had a Mr. Bean marathon on New Years eve - one of the best New Years ever (the eve of 1995, if I remember correctly). I actually have old school home video footage of us watching it...good times and good memories. Oh and as for his return, I'd really just like to see him do another few seasons of the old school type of Bean. Just some wholesome episodes like he originally started off doing.
Just something to add to the success of the Mr Bean character, my 10 year old nephew and 5 year old niece LOVE the cartoon and still regularly watch it.
The end when Bean says he likes to stay till the end too.....warmed me right up that did. Something just so lovely about it. Love that guy, great video.
Bean The Movie is such an amazing film. Howard Goodall's score for it is one of the all time great OSTs to any film and I ended up bawling my eyes out by the end because the music is so powerful. I don't get why Goodall isn't working on major films, he is incredible!

I remember watching Mr. Bean on Sundays mornings with my parents back in 90-00's. Miss those days, however I think it's time to let Bean rest, he's already gave us a great share of happiness. Now it's my turn to sit down with my kids watching Mr. Bean.

Yes, I love the movie too. Part of it is that it was my gateway to the character. But the movie does hold up, giving us classic bits like Bean thinking the bird was a greeting

I love this character! I would say that a very similar character is done in Rat Race and I kinda felt that was missing from this video. Other than that, this is a fantastic synopsis!
I agree, TTBL is another underrated comedic gem. It only received mixed reviews when aired but actually was brilliant and has aged well. Not only was Rowan great in it as always, but the supporting characters were amazing, especially David Haig as Grim - still one of my favourite sitcom characters ever.
I'd argue that SpongeBob's current popularity is quite similar to Mr. Bean's 10-15 years ago. Thanks to old fans of the original series & films, as well as young fans of the cartoon interacting & sharing countless memes & images. I still remember people sharing those images of Mr. Bean's face photoshopped on to random celebrities, characters & babies. Then there were those countless edited videos of Mr. Bean saying Magic & YTPs that were popular around 2012.
Great idea to replace the laugh track with generic slapstick music. It proves the point perfectly. It was common practice for ITV to use fake laughter at that time, whereas the BBC would use a real audience, or not have a laugh track at all. I'm sure Howard Goodhall (pronounced good-all) could have come up with some fantastic bespoke music.

The situations and Mr. Beans reaction to them are hilarious. I'll never get tired of watching the Mr. Bean shorts. My late grand mother was a big fan of British comedy and kinda re-juvinated my lpve for the Mr. Bean skits. Great short documentary.
We don't have laugh tracks in the UK. You just show it to an audience and record their reactions, upping and lowering the volume where you see fit for watching it at home
I think we all overlook the fact that he essentially is a mime. I love the character and understand the reason for not using that word is because it only belittles the character but aside from putting on the white makeup and striped shirt he’s pantomiming to the point you don’t lose anything if you push the mute button.
I love the musical number at the end of holiday! It's weird, but oddly epic and triumphant. And emotional! such a beautiful moment to see his joy at the beach! Very inspiring
I was born in Brazil and one of my early memories is me lying on my parents bed drinking from a baby bottle and watching Mr. Bean with my dad, I have a special affection for this loveable character
I like your videos. I totally forgot about Mr Bean over the years. I was a theater nerd and we would watch him to get ideas about facial and body expressions. I'm now a 2nd grade teacher and one kid asked to watch the cartoon. The look on my face was in shock. Now we watch him every Friday. He always wins the votes even though they don't laugh. I find myself cracking up at them. They didn't understand the real one. But still glad to see he lives in a cartoon form as well.
Rowen Atkinson is a comedy genius. Tv, movies, standup. He excelled at all of these and made it look easy. Mr Bean, Blackadder, and The Thin Blue line are all Television Hall of Fame worthy series. All brought to life by Rowen.
Well Howard Goodall did get a first in music from Oxford, as well as countless other awards since including three honorary doctorates and CBE for his services to music education.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention that one of the reasons why Rowan created the character is that he had a severe stutter when he was a child. His unique style of delivery in Blackadder--I love the way he says 'Bob'--was developed for the same reason.
Mr. Bean was CRAZY popular in India in the early 2000s. It was telecast on Pogo, Star Movies, Star World - every other entertainment channel. So its a huge part of my childhood. Great analysis. 💕
i remember that fan theory way back about mr bean being some sort of alien sent to earth (and many theories as to why), since every episode opened with a beam of light and mr bean falling to the ground. i never watched the animated series, can't believe they confirmed it!

Those who compare Mall Cop with Johnny English must be the same that consider the American Mr. Bean movie the best work with the character.

Considering the weirdass disturbing chinese and indian kids' videos are still being spewed out, it's hard to put that in remotely the shadiest tier, but it does sound weiiird.
I was introduced to Mr. Bean in the early 90s as a teenager. My local PBS affiliate out of Richmond, Virginia would play the episodes late on Saturday Nights with The Red Green Show and Doctor Who. What time to be alive!
I prefer the Holiday movie over the first for the fact that there isn't an overabundance of dialogue. I think a whole lot of dialogue takes away from the mystique of the character, and the world he is in. Personal opinion of course. I do love the first movie and it does have some great scenes but it didn't feel like Mr. Bean completely just felt like a different movie that they dropped Bean into

I wouldn't say that he's a 100% silent character. Sure, his physical comedy and exaggerated expressions speak for themselves, but it just wouldn't be Mr. Bean without his usual grunts, mumbles, and occasional full words punctuating some of his best bits. The cartoon I'm 50/50 about. It's not bad, but it really just feels like a hat on a hat. You have essentially a live action cartoon character, and even if he did act things out for the animators to animate, the fact that it IS a cartoon series just feels a bit redundant. That said, I do respect him feeling he's too old and not as able to perform as much physical comedy, preferring a cartoon series or movie instead.
Is Rowan Atkinson 50/50 on Mr Bean nowadays? Sometimes he's reported saying he's not too big on playing the character at times currently.
mightyfilm I’ve always described Mr Bean as being more laconic than silent; he says only what’s necessary, and nothing more.
Sometimes when he does manage to open his mouth and let out a couple words, I actually find it just as funny as his more physical stuff. I never fail to laugh at the Christmas episode where he hangs up his stockings, only to get another stocking inside and mutter "Ah. Christmas Socks." And of course the time he went to church and confusingly and lacking any rhythm squawks "HALLEHLUULIA" during the hymn just always busts me up.
The cartoon has different sort of humour I guess. It's more rediculas, over the top, rather than a slap stick, physical comedy
I guess they need to compensate for the disconnect from the rigidity of live action to the anything goes animated world. I give them all the credit for trying to keep that wackiness in a wackier format. They certainly translated it quite well, and the cartoon is entertaining in its own right. They know that they can't quite capture the cartoonish man in a real world setting in cartoon form, so they have to exaggerate in other areas. I did enjoy what I've seen in the cartoon, but it doesn't quite compare to the live series.

I much prefer the second Bean film because it focuses on him more. I find it weird that you say there's no straight man character, when he travels on and off with two other people. If anything there are more straight man characters for him to play off.
I feel it's much more in the vain of the original sketch format too, since having him travel to different places to meet different people throughout the course of the film is almost like writing it as simply, a bunch of sketches playing after each other
Mr Bean's Holiday was closer to the series format, as it was a series of sketches linked with a single narrative thread. The sketches never had scenes without Bean present.
I feel 1997's Bean is a super underrated and utter classic in 1990s American cinema, as well. Almost Cult Classic, a bit I feel.
Thin Blue Line was also incredibly underrated
I'm an English teacher in Vietnam. I cannot tell you how happy the younger students I teach get when I told them that we're going to be watching some Mr. Bean. even the older kids, they might not want to watch the Mr Bean cartoon, but they're still going to laugh
I’m a teacher of languages too . And I always show my bean since there’s little to no dialogue I can adapt it to all my students. It still makes them laugh.

A while ago, I read a comment on how Rowan can retire the character with a neat little sendoff.
The comment said it should incorporate the age argument by having Mr. Bean in a retirement home, bored. He then gets up and starts committing some shenanigans like he usually did.
I find that a very good sendoff idea if it ever happens.
Growing up, it was a treat that I was allowed to stay up late to watch Bean on PBS. While I appreciate the cartoon & his other ventures, the originals are the really the only Bean for me!
I loved Mr. Bean back in the 90's. I watched it at every opportunity on CBC in Canada. One of my favorite all time shows - it's not only funny but relaxing too lol, if that makes any sense.
like the laugh tracks on old time shows, it never bothered me. To me it would just seem eerie without it.
I remember one particular year they had a Mr. Bean marathon on New Years eve - one of the best New Years ever (the eve of 1995, if I remember correctly). I actually have old school home video footage of us watching it...good times and good memories.
Oh and as for his return, I'd really just like to see him do another few seasons of the old school type of Bean. Just some wholesome episodes like he originally started off doing.

I was 12yo the first time I watched Mr. Bean, I was at a friend's house who had cable TV and I was instantly glued laughing, good times.
Imagine a universe where the funny slapstick British man was called mr White and the powerful drug lord from New Mexico was called mr Bean
Just something to add to the success of the Mr Bean character, my 10 year old nephew and 5 year old niece LOVE the cartoon and still regularly watch it.
I remember watching Mr.Bean's holiday at school.
The end when Bean says he likes to stay till the end too.....warmed me right up that did. Something just so lovely about it. Love that guy, great video.

Bean The Movie is such an amazing film. Howard Goodall's score for it is one of the all time great OSTs to any film and I ended up bawling my eyes out by the end because the music is so powerful. I don't get why Goodall isn't working on major films, he is incredible!

When I saw Mr. Bean's Holiday it was a packed theater, and it was Brilliant.
Yes, I love the movie too. Part of it is that it was my gateway to the character. But the movie does hold up, giving us classic bits like Bean thinking the bird was a greeting

I love this character! I would say that a very similar character is done in Rat Race and I kinda felt that was missing from this video. Other than that, this is a fantastic synopsis!
The Thin Blue Line is a great comedy show. One of my favorites by far. Especially the episode about the ER 🤣🤣
I agree, TTBL is another underrated comedic gem. It only received mixed reviews when aired but actually was brilliant and has aged well. Not only was Rowan great in it as always, but the supporting characters were amazing, especially David Haig as Grim - still one of my favourite sitcom characters ever.
So much more can be done for bean! Like visiting family, Waterpark, golf....etc
A genius performer, actor and smart mind. All through body language this man managed to stay silent and become a huge success.
I'd argue that SpongeBob's current popularity is quite similar to Mr. Bean's 10-15 years ago. Thanks to old fans of the original series & films, as well as young fans of the cartoon interacting & sharing countless memes & images. I still remember people sharing those images of Mr. Bean's face photoshopped on to random celebrities, characters & babies.
Then there were those countless edited videos of Mr. Bean saying Magic & YTPs that were popular around 2012.
Great idea to replace the laugh track with generic slapstick music. It proves the point perfectly. It was common practice for ITV to use fake laughter at that time, whereas the BBC would use a real audience, or not have a laugh track at all. I'm sure Howard Goodhall (pronounced good-all) could have come up with some fantastic bespoke music.
I'm so glad Mr Bean became a hit in America, grew up watching that and Black Adder. 💜

I used to watch Mr. Bean episodes when I was growing up, it's sad to see that he may no longer play as Mr. Bean anymore. But I'm hoping that we may see him in the future being portrayed as Mr. Bean.
The situations and Mr. Beans reaction to them are hilarious. I'll never get tired of watching the Mr. Bean shorts. My late grand mother was a big fan of British comedy and kinda re-juvinated my lpve for the Mr. Bean skits. Great short documentary.
We don't have laugh tracks in the UK. You just show it to an audience and record their reactions, upping and lowering the volume where you see fit for watching it at home
I think we all overlook the fact that he essentially is a mime. I love the character and understand the reason for not using that word is because it only belittles the character but aside from putting on the white makeup and striped shirt he’s pantomiming to the point you don’t lose anything if you push the mute button.
I love the musical number at the end of holiday! It's weird, but oddly epic and triumphant. And emotional! such a beautiful moment to see his joy at the beach! Very inspiring
Mr. Bean is probably one of the best comedy shows ever, so few episodes but such amazing material, even the clips here makes me burst laughing.

I was born in Brazil and one of my early memories is me lying on my parents bed drinking from a baby bottle and watching Mr. Bean with my dad, I have a special affection for this loveable character
I like your videos. I totally forgot about Mr Bean over the years. I was a theater nerd and we would watch him to get ideas about facial and body expressions. I'm now a 2nd grade teacher and one kid asked to watch the cartoon. The look on my face was in shock. Now we watch him every Friday. He always wins the votes even though they don't laugh. I find myself cracking up at them. They didn't understand the real one. But still glad to see he lives in a cartoon form as well.

Rowen Atkinson is a comedy genius. Tv, movies, standup. He excelled at all of these and made it look easy. Mr Bean, Blackadder, and The Thin Blue line are all Television Hall of Fame worthy series. All brought to life by Rowen.
I still can't believe how good the music of the first movie is.
Well Howard Goodall did get a first in music from Oxford, as well as countless other awards since including three honorary doctorates and CBE for his services to music education.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention that one of the reasons why Rowan created the character is that he had a severe stutter when he was a child. His unique style of delivery in Blackadder--I love the way he says 'Bob'--was developed for the same reason.
Mr. Bean was CRAZY popular in India in the early 2000s. It was telecast on Pogo, Star Movies, Star World - every other entertainment channel. So its a huge part of my childhood.

i remember that fan theory way back about mr bean being some sort of alien sent to earth (and many theories as to why), since every episode opened with a beam of light and mr bean falling to the ground. i never watched the animated series, can't believe they confirmed it!
The blue car is a reliant regal supervan 3. The same vehicle used in comedy sitcom only fools and horses. Another iconic piece of british comedy.
