The Truth Behind These Used 2.5 Jeep Engines I Scored, Did They lie?

- I tell the story through out the video, I got these hard to come by engines in a deal with a jeep I bought. Story sounded good but bad with the price that I paid for everything. I had to do some adapting and re-wiring to run on my custom engine stand. Hope you enjoy and maybe even learn a thing or two!
I changed video editing software so this is first time using it, video maybe off from normal.
I will never trade my 2.5 out in my wrangler. With the gearing I have it gets me where ever i wanna go and back. Plus it doesn't have enpugh power to break anything so I can thrash on it like it owes me money without worries.
I love the 2.5s on the trails and around town. They are lighter, quieter, less maintenance and 1/3 better MPGs. The highway is a different story. Always wanted to see what a turbo would do, kind-of like the Ford 2.3s but that just goes back against the less is more theme.
The na simplicity is not worth sacrifice if you actually trail. But I would be curious
@@TheMainLead what do you think about for highway use?
Around town and trails they are great. Over 50, especially on mountain passes they are total dogs. Love mine, but its not a freeway/ mountain pass friendly.
You mentioned 1/3 better fuel mileage?
Is that compared to 4.0 liter
inline 6 cyl ?
And, what year model?
.
I had a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lorado. 4.0 liter auto trans 4x4.
24 mpg with easy highway use.
89 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 4 cyl. 5 speed manual transmission 4x4. The best it has ever done is 17.3 mpg.
My man is sitting on a gold mine right now with them two motors way to go bro
I can vouch for his parts. I bought a used core motor from him about 5-6 years ago for my 92 Laredo Cherokee, and the core I got was competent for a rebuild, that still runs today, by the way.
I had a 2.5 in my 85 xj. The rods were worn so bad there was nearly enough space between the rod and the crank i could almost slip my finger between them. I said i was gonna drive it until it blows to pieces. It took 4 years and 98,000 miles until it slowed right down and quit. I have no idea how it lasted so long. I just thought it was unbelievable. For the last few months i couldn’t restart it after it was warm unless i had 2 good batteries to crank it. Either that or wait 5 or 6 hours for it to start on one battery. So i got some faith in the old 2.5. Great video.
Painfully honest Dex! Love it and keep them coming!
There is a high pitched background frequency in this video that I just can’t handle.
My wife yelled at me to turn whatever I was watching off 😆
It's gone at 14:42
Came here to say the same. Like a battery charger in the background?
It must have been one of the idler wheels driving the film in his digital camera.
😁☕
I heard the same noise, off and on. I thought it was just tinnitus.🙉
Hey dex, i just want to say, I have the shop schematics for the 4 an 6 cylinder motors. And the books for fuel injection , all the plugs and their types. . I'm willing to have them printed off and give them to you,
I have a cj5 with a 88 Cherokee everything In side. Including airco. Ect. So I made my own system and bought this stuff, of corse you need it. So if your interested in this stuff, let me know and I'll start putting together what you need, all of it , renix crap, mabe at some point you can help me if I need it. Ok peace. Keep jeeping. Bro.
But Dex, for something to be hard to get, "supply and demand" demands that there be some sort of demand for the item. I'm amazed that there is any demand for those engines.
Great videos!
THe guy from "I do Cars" channel talks about this, if a motor is sold alot meanig people keep them in stock there cheaper than motors that aren't sold very much.
All these harnesses. This guy should look into either an aftermarket ECU, or what I did with a P59 on my CB450... Guess You'd want working sensors in your new-used engine.
For your water pump you said it was brushless with is kinda like 3 phase electricity couldn’t you use a rc esc and a box to center your servo to control the esc
I like my jeeps. Need to have time to work on em more... thanks for the videos..
I had a 98 2 door 5 speed 4x4, light blue, had 4.56s and 35s and it was a damn strong rig, I got a 5 speed 4Runner v6 now and it’s not even a comparison regarding the power but I don’t have to work on the 4Runner as much lol
Good info thanks, like that engine test stand
Always learn something on your video's why I watch em !!!
We just use 2 gardens hoses for cooling.... constant loss. Much easier and no rad needed.
Gotta watch for bubbles for head gasket issues!
@@dexjs get yourself a 12volt RV water pump, RV supply, or, better yet farm & feed stores often have 12volt water pumps/sprayer tank pumps of varying flow/psi . probably cheaper than RV supply.
My 96' Dakota sport has a little 2.5 with the 5 speed, damn thing runs like a scalded dog, but boy is it gutless! Great around town truck, but you hit the highway you may as well get comfortable in the slow lane!
I just rebuilt my 2.5 its had abt 240k on it before the rebuild ive only been driving for abt 2 weeks so far and ive had 0 issues other than i have to redo the exhaust
At 1st thought, your engine stand looks like something you might find in a NY City art gallery.
My sister had a 94 2 door 4 cylinder with a 5 speed... rare lil jeep it ran forever.. she flipped it we put a lexan windshield in it and she drove it til her husband crashed it. Sold it for parts bc she didn't know what she had back then.
I noticed something on my 2.5 after I changed the throttle position sensor. To get it to start I have to gently tap the gas. Like you were gently tapping the throttle.
Is that TPS adjustable?
It might need the screws loosened, move the TPS by rotating a very tiny bit, then retighten the screws.
Another thought, how dirty is the throttle body/ throttle plate? If it has crud on it, especially the edges, it may be blocking idle air bypass orifice. But, if that gets plugged, it won't want to idle, it will also stumble and die ( the engine), when you take foot off go pedal, like at stoplights, or any stationary position.
34:00 my 1996 4.0 with 378,000 miles gets a weird rough idle like that when it gets warm. Never thought of the O2 sensor at all, even though I changed mine (upstream) recently and it got rid of a million codes, and has a way longer interval between CAT efficiency codes too.
I tried to change my thermostat a couple years ago, ended up with numerous bad ones. Put the OE from 1996 back in, and everything is fine again.
Eric at Southmain Auto Repair uses the noid light quite regularly.
the 2.5's are rare as hens teeth here in canada too. Ive seen guys charge mad money for them
I've got a 2.5 an ax5 with transfer case and computer out of my 94 yj that I'm doing an LS swap on so for you dex you can have them they work/run no charge
Where you from??
If I had to pick a 2.5 or a 4.0
4.0 everyday
But in a car? 2.5 for sure , best four-cylinder engine I ever had, I’ve owned two and both of them made it to 240xxxx before the engine went
Get a camry from 01 and before with a 4 cylinder i had one get 346k before the trans went the motor was fine
I don’t go by miles. My 95 has 170-180k miles and it’s been wrecked, rolled over and sunk in mud and it sounds better than my 04 rubicon with 100k miles.
Do you think it’s maintenance or luck of the draw?
@@TheMainLead probably a little of both
is that iron duke
great vid thanks
Do you have 5speed videos?they both sound great
Great video good info
Where in Tennessee are y'all and do you have a red jeep with a dirty water rider sticker on windshield
I have 97 TJ SE 2.5L engine, but the PCM 56041622AC is bad, sir can any 2.5L PCM match or start the Jeep?
How does a guy buy from you? What's the website?
I was wondering if my 98 dodge 5.2 computer would run my 96 jeep 4.0 xj that im rewiring bc of fire but I bought a 99 parts jeep for 200 bucks and should not need to use that 98 truck but it does plug up... thx man
A cheap inverter drive would turn that dc 12v into 12vac
What about brushless like a drill? Maybe?
Where's your shop at?
South Carolina or Alabama?
I am not remotely sure about this but is that 2.5 jeep motor anywhere near the same as the 2.5 that came in the early 90's dodge cars and mini van the fwd stuff i got no idea
Anyways they probably built 5 million of the crap boxs over the years
What few things do u actually have connected to the computer?
Couldnt you just compare the two orders 4 0 and 2.5 and put it at tdc and hook them up
Man I'm just saying we or at least me could use a build video on that stand
Hey yo dex, do u have a 4.0 for sale? Im in the market for one. Mine just lost compression cylinder 1. Wonder where i can contact if needed
Should just go live 🎬
Made in dexico

Don’t your brother have a 2.5 engine somewhere? Can’t you steal his computer
the 2.5s have no power without back pressure they need it badly
Hi DexJs gr8 video clips...do you have an email so i can get in contact with you guys, thank u
