- A Norwich City School District bus driver’s quick thinking recently prevented a student from being hit by a car. Samantha Call grabbed the boy from behind as a car whizzes by the open doors of school bus. The school bus was stopped on state Route 12 at 10:44 a.m. April 26 with its stop arm out and red lights flashing, according William Loomis, the school district’s transportation supervisor. I don't think the kid even realized what happened. Maybe after processing he thanked the driver the next morning.

I once got hit by a motorcycle. I didn't feel any pain and stood up quickly. Everyone was yelling that I should be lying down. But I was just standing there like a dumb tree. I didn't noticed that my arms and feet were shaking. I was just in shock and confused. For some reason, I didn't want to lie down, I was scared. Everyone were yelling, and pushing me down the floor. It was chaotic. Luckily I didn't suffer severe injuries. Just a bruise and a dislocated arm.
People saying the car wouldn't have hit the kid don't seem to realize that woman had SECONDS to realize what was happening and react. Whether or not the car would have missed the kid is irrelevant. This video was about a woman who recognized danger and reacted, protecting the student from potential harm. Her reaction was amazing. ❤️
As opposed to doing nothing and potentially witnessing the worst outcome. She did fantastic work.

The bus driver did the right thing by grabbing the boy but she didn't save him. The car was passing the bus door a few feet away the same moment she grabbed him. Play the video at slow speed. People commenting here believe the title of the video rather than look closely at what happened. The boy didn't think that he was going to get hit after the bus driver grabbed him. He looked at her like "what was that for"? She shouldn't have opened the door for him to get out in the street. That's common sense. I know that bus drivers in rural areas do that but they probably shouldn't unless there are no cars coming from behind. Public bus drivers don't do that. No one does that unless they are negligent. And its pointless for people here to say that the car driver broke the law. Yeah, drivers break laws. You have to take precautions.

School bus drivers are the real deal. This is the thing i hate cause (at least where i live in the US) the bus drivers cant do anything because they are legally not allowed to pull so traffic cannot go around them so as to not block traffic, but if the kid gets injured in any way from a car not stopping they still are the ones blamed. Vehicles going around buses with their lights on happens a lot around my town and the school district I live in wont do anything about it. Bus drivers deserve much better treatment then they get. Janitors were the last people on the list to be eligible to retrieve the shot. I do agree that teachers should be on the top of the list and all that, so don't get me wrong there. When I was a kid our school bus driver saved the lives of all children on board when she was forced to drive into a ditch to avoid a speeding gravel truck coming at us head on. The bus was stopped to let a child off and cars coming the opposite direction were stopped as they are supposed to. Gravel truck drivers in the area had a bad reputation of being impatient and driving around cars on the highway. This gravel truck driver probably didn’t realize the cars were stopped for a school bus and came barreling around the cars straight for our bus. Thank you Mrs. Hendrix for thinking quick and getting all of us out of the way of a tragedy.
Can I ask what happened next? Did the school complain to the truck company? Did people identify that specific truck and the driver get charged? Did people finally get it after that and stop going on the opposite lane to avoid stopped cars?
@@sexyangel072 From what I remember (this was over 20 years ago when I was around 10) the driver stopped and didn’t try to run. He pulled over and waited for police to come. Mrs. Hendrix was rewarded for her quick thinking the next day at school. This was a very small town so everyone knew about it. The driver was fired and turns out the owner of the trucking company he worked for was a very close friend of my parents so that made things even worse for him. I don’t know what happened to the driver after that, but I remember seeing less reckless driving from Reeves Bros Trucking drivers at least. Plus the owner of the company always sent my parents a very nice Christmas present every year. Not sure if the gifts ever had anything to do with what happened, but it was nice.
Wow!
Sounds like a bus driver I had when I was in elementary school. Frank was one of those drivers who really loved his job. He always treated us like he did his own kids and grand kids. He kept a bunch of us from getting creamed by a drunk driver in a half ton truck once. We were starting to get off the bus, me and another girl had already, when he saw the truck speeding towards us. The driver turned early and fast and jumped the curb and across this lady’s front lawn. Frank leapt up out of his seat and grabbed us back onto the bus and closed the door just as the idiot came passed us. He got the license plate number and gave it to the cops. Turns out the idiot was a driver for our school bus company. He took a personal day and used it to make a huge mistake. He ended up t-boning a cop car right after he came close to running us over. I’m not sure exactly what happened after that as that was 30 years ago. I do know that he hit the cop car his truck caught on fire. Can’t say I care so long as no innocent person was injured. And some how the police officer walked away with minor injuries. Her patrol car didn’t make it though.
Damn. Something like that also happened to my mother. But with the different that she just passed the door from our house and the driver drove through the sidewalk with like 20-30mph just to stop near a bakery wich is our neighbour.

She knows these kids' names by heart. They're more than passengers in her eyes, that's for sure
How bout the fact that she’s so good at her job, she learns her kids names on her route?
I had a few bus drivers. Some did, some didn’t. She’s one of the good ones.
That happened to me once back in the late 70s my bus driver slammed the door in my face and I turned around to ask him what was up and a car raced past. God bless you Herman ohm. He also had treats for every holiday he would hand out on the bus
Good people always leave footprints in your hearth ❤❤❤
It’s good to see a bus driver who’s attentive, my uncle lost his life this way when he was a kid, long before I was born, but it still affects my family to this day. Bless this woman for being aware and protective of the kids on board!
R.i.p to your uncle
I’m so sorry to hear this!!
My condolences
I’m so sorry. Was the driver at least caught and punished?
What a good driver! Saved his life, wow! She's not sleeping on the job and very aware of her surroundings. Excellent grab!!!
Reminds me of a childhood occurrence when a classmate hopped on his bike and didn’t see the bus coming and with incredible presence of mind my other friend grabbed the rear seat of his bike and pulled the bike away from the oncoming bus. I’m still amazed at my friends quick handling at the time.
I’ve been a bus driver for 24 years and that was a great save ! You’d be surprised at how often things like that happen. One thing I do have to say though, that child shouldn’t be walking up to the front of the bus while it’s still moving.
I agree. All through school we werent allowed to get out of our seats until the bus stopped completely and the driver said to come to the front. A kid on the bus one day asked why do we have to wait for the bus to completely stop, the driver said "The seats are softer than the floor, which means if someone doesnt see the brake lights in time and runs into us, and you are standing in the walkway, you more likely to hit the hard floor instead of the softer seat cushion."
“The seats ate softer than the floor”. I love that! I’ll be stealing that one 😉👍🏻
there might be different rules in different places but i get up when the bus is moving or the bus driver will miss my stop.
Watch the video. Don't just believe what the title says.

She’s a very good driver and saved a life. God bless you.
The driver didn't save the boy. The car was passing the bus door about 6 feet away the same moment he was going down the steps. You can see he wouldn't have been hit if you play the video at slow speed. People commenting believe the title of the video rather than look closely at what happened.
@@anthonypuccetti8779 Maybe he wouldn't have been 𝘩𝘪𝘵 but you're missing the point. Regardless, cars are supposed to stop when school buses are at a stop and kids are getting off. The woman still was caring enough to grab the boy, rather than risking it. If the boy were to have crossed instead of going around the front of the bus he may have been hit or nearly hit, so the woman still saved him. It's the thought of her grabbing him that matters, don't be so ignorant.

This isn’t really negative but why does the bus door open on the other side of the road? Is it the design of it cuz wouldn’t it make sense if they had the door on the pedestrian side?
@@dchoi381 that would be a DOT question, but I've never in my life time in are area anyways seen a school bus door open on the coming at you traffic side, and where I live we weren't allowed to have are students crossing in front of are buses,we avoided that situation by switching are routes around to where as no students needed to cross any road period, and normally there isn't enough room on your right for traffic to pass you even and because this seems to be happening more,we were to put are buses at a angle,so they couldn't pass on are right, but these were rules back in 2013,so I don't know the rules now so I'm sure they have changed 😊...

I see that he was 6 or 7 feet away as the car was passing. Without her grabbing him, he would've been 5 or 6 feet from the car just as it passed. Do you seriously believe that anyone can traverse 6 feet in a split second unless they're already at a full sprint?
There’s literally a flipping blinking stop sign on the bus, are these people blind??
The driver of the car passed on the right (no stop sign on right of bus) , Passing on the right and in the shoulder of the road is illegal , and so I bet the car driver didn't see a stop sign , but they would have seen the blinking red lights and if they missed that , there was a big yellow vehicle stopped in the middle of the road , when this happens it is never an accident it is premeditated attempted vehicular homicide .
Neymar is the best football player ever
@@randoom2405 I know it's hard to believe , but yes even school busses drive on the right side of the road here , we would have a lot more traffic jams if we let them just drive on either side of the road , so we tend to keep them on the same side as all our other traffic . In this video the school bus door opens to the shoulder of the road , not a driving lane , and illegal to pass another vehicle from shoulder , or from the right . in rural areas there are alot of roads just like this with a wide paved shoulder , it is just there for emergency stopping (flat tire , other breakdown , heart attack Etc. then you can use the shoulder) And why did they paint that big bread box bus yellow anyway ? Because it was the color of stop signs . Hah.
Apparently they are blind. Just look around when driving. There are red lights and stop signs. Drivers just fly by them like they are not even there. A lot of drivers do not believe in following the rules of the road. Usually those are the drivers that only slow the heck down when they see a police car.
Nope,just STUPID!!

@@julie_fitzgerald You are beyond ignorant. Most children need to cross the road to be on the right side for their home. Dropping off passengers in the middle of the road is a bad idea. The driver here violates all safety rules. To release passengers, you should pull over to the side of the road, and not count on the fact that no one will overtake the bus from the right side!
