This was really a wild ride. How do you like it? Which of the final boss themes from the Splatoon series is your favorite, and why? 🤔
We have quite a big Splatoon 3 playlist so far: ruclips.net/video/9DUPHLKPRtg/видео.html
This one. Also, as for leitmotifs, Atsuover is my favorite example. I'd recommend you check out her work.
Fly octo fly is still super good though.
@@Paradoxe_0 based
I am Octavio from splatoon 1
The leitmotif falls apart faster than my salmon run rank at Eggsecutive VP
And Salmon Run feels significantly harder in Splatoon 3 to me, haha.
@@ChristophJakob it actually is, with more boss salmonids and small Fry's needing one less hot to kill you
@@vvolfaadala7634 they learned to go for the shin
@@larsthememelord3383 just wait until they learn to go for the balls
its true 😔
It’s also fitting how the happy little workers theme starts as consistent and normal, but as the drums come in, you slowly notice that something’s off. Eventually the happy little workers motif completely deteriorates, similar to the facade of legitimate work deteriorates and you now see Mr. Grizz’s true colors.
Yeah, pink and purple
It sounds in line with how he doesn't belong with that world
@@Woffle8340 and orange
Idk if anyone else who played Splatoon 2 feels like this, but the first phase sounds anything but normal to me. The original S2 version is "happy" with sinister undertones, and eventually you settle into this mindsets that yeah, everything about Grizzco is super shady and we just kinda roll with that now. Then you hear the actual "good" version of the music that plays during the rockets launch. And then you get that weird bouncy music that's both out of line with what you've heard before AND the situation, and it gets downright disturbing.
@@Iphao I can relate, cause I only have splatoon 2.
I still love the detail that as the song goes on, and Mr. Grizz’s plan sets further into motion, the music becomes more complex. The fact that the gurgling vocals from phase two turn into human chanting symbolizes the return of the Mammalians. The inclusion of the Fishing Frenzy motif in phase two is very interesting too, grounding the salmon run connection.
Edit: the major scale of the third phase isn’t necessarily meant to cheer you on, I think it also symbolizes that Mr Grizz sees his plan as genuinely being righteous.
edit 2: i want to hear what the first phase would sound like if everything was on-beat and in sync
The chord progression in phase 3 sounds quite heroic to me, maybe even over the top heroic. So I can see how both interpretations could work!
@@ChristophJakob it’s heroic for Grizz, I mean he’s bringing back his brothers and sisters
@@Null82085 he's trying to
To me, the Anomaly Showdown theme feels… unnerving.
Like the realization of all that we’ve done at Grizzco has caused this… Hairmagedon.
It’s especially unnerving for those who play Salmon Run more then other multiplayer modes. Especially if you were super good at Salmon Run.
Don't call it "Hairmageddon." HR doesn't like it.

@@vicenteisaaclopezvaldez2450 Human Resources, which is a nice little callback to Mr.Grizz's backstory.
Though I think Hair Resources is amusing too.
Funnily enough the harmony in the first phase of the bossfight sounds like music you'd hear in the context of space, like a generic spaceship jingle
Yeah! The off-beat makes it quite unpleasant to listen, but it's pretty clever and perfectly ridiculous.
It’s what you hear in his shop/the salmon run lobby
@@_StarGutz_ yeah but they mean the instrument that’s used sounds space like.
Phase 1: A little goofy, but also makes you want to throw up. The music is losing its sanity, much like Grizz did. Also shows that nauseating, vertigo-like feeling that you’ve been duped by salmon run on a massive scale.
Phase 2: Learning the boss fight and focusing on the threat at hand. Still a little crazy. Progresses more toward humanoid vocals.
Phase 3: Triumphant Trumpet melody to show that Mr. Grizz believes himself to be doing the right thing, and that he’s at his zenith. Human vocals are further intensified and inkling vocals are gone, showing his goal of turning the inklings into mammals. Epic, apocalyptic, threatening interlude sounds like a classic goofy villain theme in order to give a feeling that you can do it.
Phase 3: OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS 🤩💕😍😩😘
That's the best analysis of this music
"It's odd"
Intentionally odd, yeah. It does feel somewhat threatening later on... but the oddness is always there haha.
@@ChristophJakob And I absolutely love it.
It's in my top 3 of favorite songs in the game.
I love how the community dubbed it “anomaly showdown”
Even though not official, it is a pretty good name, right =D
It should’ve been hairy little workers
Tbh a better name than Bear With Me even though the pun is fun
I think that was mainly to avoid spoilers for people who hadn''t finished the game yet
I still prefer Bear with Me over Anomaly Showdown. Not that it isnt good, but it sounds a little generic if you ask me.
There’s this final boss theme, and then there’s the finale- seeing the words
“Calamari Inkantation 3MIX” in the corner of the screen, and the buildup to the first vocals of the song is just- 🤌

Hey you're the cuttletavio guy
@@hankenjoyer what
@@redsiren9354 yeah I always think about that when I finish an event wave
The song sounds so weird and unusual and perfectly adds on the the fact that mammals are aliens to the world of splatoon. The song is weird but really fits what you're fighting.
If you’re looking for more crazy, I’d have to recommend taking a look at the Splatfest battle theme “Till Depth Do Us Part.” The buildup to the main chorus has a section that alternate between 9/8 and 7/8 time signature _every measure_, but it works so well. I didn’t even realize it did this until I went to start working on a cover of it myself, even though I had learned to play the song by memory before the game even came out. (It got datamined from the Splatfest World Premiere demo almost as soon as it was available for download.)
Sorry but I'm not hearing it. Sounds like a standard 4/4 song to me. Still a fantastic track though.
till depth do us part slaps man
No it doesnt..? Idk what version youre listening to but its in 4/4 for the entire song
@@steverman2312 i can see the argument for that, but to me the accented beats sound really off in 4/4. I can only ever hear that in the weird combination of triplets and doubles. I am working on a transposition, and while it’s not done yet, I could invite you to the project to show you what I mean.
@@xraenon1664 syncopation, syncopation. The downbeat doesnt move
NGL I gradually lost my composure during the course of my first play of this fight specifically because of it being a final boss to a leitmotif introduced in lobby music - Lobby music that, to me, feels like it's deliberately invoking the feeling of corporate muzak to boot - and that lobby music getting more and more epic sounding as the fight progressed. I think I was laughing by the end of the fight due to what feels to me like a (well composed) musical joke, and I adore this music for that.
Saaaaame, Stephen! I laughed my entire way through the song when I played. I had the BEST time and couldn't take anything seriously in the moment. It felt really special.
with the happy little workers motif disappearing, i see it as a nod to "hey this is mr grizz the salmon run guy!" at the beginning, but it cuts out after a while as a way of saying that the salmonids arent a part of this anymore. It's just you and grizz.
or i could be heavily overthinking it
7:14 [SPOILERS] well if you're this far ya already know the ending of the game but still
Mr.Grizz is the stubborn 'BOM' in the song! It makes sense for the character, he can't accept a world where mammals aren't the dominant race, similarly to how the 'BOM' can't accept that this song is no Happy Little Workers
*B O M*
*B O M*
*B O M*
B O M
*B O M*
0:52 I love how the main motif is light, bouncy, and far away, just like how it would feel to be in space
So one thing I noticed is that the first phase actually isn’t as random as he made it out to be. If we use the Happy Little Workers leitmotif as reference, the drums (or boms) will line up every other measure. This is known as Polytempo, in the sense that this phase has more than one tempo set up to unify every other measure. Every other instrument is in tempo with the drums (again, or boms) with a differently accented rhythm.
Also, I’m sure people realized this already, but the second phase contains the cello theme from Fishing Frenzy.
I don't know if you caught this, but at 8:30, that vibraphone-sounding instrument is playing a motif from Fishing Frenzy.
I keep coming back to this track. The spectacle of it all is insane. How they manage to mesh Salmon Run and the patriotic vibe of the space race together and sound epic is just incredible.
Getting your insight about how it goes from a tangled mess to a clear piece now also feels like it's also the story of Mr. Grizz's own identity, ambition and motivation becoming more clear and powerful.
I really like how the music follows the fight
For both the beginning is like "yo wtf is this" but as the fight get a bit harder it's like "oh, this actually a fight" and then it's just "fuck this is serious" to "WHAT IS THIS MADNESS"
There’s actually another motif when things start to fall apart. It turns into the music that play when you stand just outside grizzco
It goes from a creepy little corporate jingle that goes steadily insane, too a triumphant anthem of the new mammalian rising. And marine life's incoming demise.
Thank goodness, now we know that Big Run is coming in December. And we got to hear a bit more of that Omega-3 Clickbait remix. I tell ya, when that gets out, you gotta look at it and figure out what the masters of heralding musical doom have changed about the song to make it so damn good.
I guess for now, I'll bring up Sea Me Now again, and to compare it with the Splatoon 1 music to see how its similar, and how it has changed.
I was actually quite hyped when I heard that "broken" version of Clickbait in the trailer. Haven't looked at it in-depth yet, but it sounded as if it was turned from a 4/4 tune into 6/8, which changes EVERYTHING haha.
@@ChristophJakob I've been listening to the snippet we got for hours. God, I hope there will be more Omega-3 covers of multiplayer songs. If there are, than Omega-3 will officially be the best splatband in the series.
There's a Japanese video that visually replicate the rhythm in the first phase, taiko no tatsujin style.
Quoting what they wrote, the drums' timing were made by "atrociously" fitting 31 beats into a 32-beat time i.e. 8 bars of 4 beats in the melody line.
Link to video?
@@chrystalwayland3860 ruclips.net/video/IHgqbr3ZLtA/видео.html
I too would like to see this video.
The video id is IHgqbr3ZLtA
Love the detail of the happy little workers motif refusing to go along with the other instruments, like how Mr. Grizz is so caught up in bringing mammals back that he doesn't listen to what anyone else wants.
By the way, this song got its official name, “Bear with me”
from the wiki,
"The first phase is polytempic, with the accompaniment track being slightly slower than the main melody by a ratio of 31:32 (which means every 31 beats on the accompaniment has the same time length as 32 beats on the main melody, making it 122.0625 BPM)."
The theme fits so well because mammals are like aliens to the inklings and octolings and ment to be otherworldly as it takes place in space
8:00 I feel like the meaning to the Xylophone at the one part is supposed to be like the player attempting to comprehend and stay calm against Mr. Grizz and trying to bend logic to accommodate him before just saying "screw this I'm just gonna kick his butt"
I really love that this tune uses a *ton* of the Salmon Run music samples. Even the triumphant and heroic hits in the last phase of the song are the same as what plays when you finish a special round in Splatoon 3
I like to think of this song as a symbolic journey through the psyche of Mr. Grizz as he came to terms with the new order of the world he woke up in. Spoilers for deepest lore content (the secret Alterna Log) following.
The first phase represents Grizz as he came out of stasis from the wreckage of the spaceship he was stuck on for so long. He was effectively a bear with human-level sapience or beyond, having been experimented on during his time with humanity, and upon realizing the world was vastly different from the one he knew and likely just wanted to return to this whole time, he had an unnatural amount of brainpower to experience the resulting dismay and confusion. How must it feel to gradually realize that everything you know, everything you've seen, everything you'd ever planned for was so far gone that the oldest thing living couldn't tell you a familiar detail from their earliest childhood? Descent into madness follows. Despair.
Within the chaos of a breaking heart and a fracturing mind, though, an irrational hope is formed. The second phase represents the beginning of Mr. Grizz proper, turning eons of preparation for colonization of a new world to a much darker purpose of reclaiming his original one. He uses the wreckage of Humanity to find everything he needs. With the weight of a relative eternity resting behind his eyes, the actions necessary seem incredibly, wondrously swift. He takes the miracle that allowed life to go on-- itself a semi-literal crystallization of Humanity's desire to set wrongs right and forge a new, prosperous future-- and corrupts it with the darkness of that which remains from those sins of the past. Himself. From this corruption came the means to reshape the world in his own image, to seize the future and make it his. Now, it was just a matter of setting things into the proper alignment.
Thus came the Rise of the Mammalians, a dangerous delusion from an animal pushed far beyond anything they should have had to handle. Phase three is the fruition of all the disparate strands into one deadly timeline. Grizzco effortlessly enlists the unsuspecting workforce of cephalopod society to gather the tools of their unmaking for what, to the bear, was an unimportant pittance in a meaningless definition of wealth. The golden eggs pile up in the belly of the rocket, as does the ooze. Production of that special material was now sufficient to turn the world warm-blooded with ease, so long as it could be delivered properly. Everything was nearing completion, and nothing would get in his way now. Mr. Grizz stood at the top of the world, staring into what for him was a new dawn after over 10,000 years of endless night. He'd endured every hardship to reach this point. He'd gone through insanity, and out the other side. It wouldn't be long now.
I was like “bruuuuhh this stuff sounds like a joke boss tf am I doing” but then I heard phase 2 & 3 and was like “this is true bear music”
interestingly, the major chords in the third phase (at least the first one) are the ones that play once you successfully beat a nighttime special wave in salmon run in splat 3, which I thought was a cool little easter egg
11:25 my favorite part of the entire song is this section (which is repeated a few times elsewhere, not just in this one place)
8:29 id like to note that the background rhythm is actually the motif from “fishing frenzy” another salmon run song
Y E S, I was hoping you'd make a video on this! It will be great, hearing the song that got me into the Splatoon 3 OST being deconstructed and analysed by a professional :)
Hope you liked it! =D
@@ChristophJakob Oh absolutely, especially the first 2 phases. They always seemed weird but now I know exactly why, which is nice and allows me to appreciate them more! :)
in my opinion, this theme captures the setting of "fighting a giant corrupted business bear in space" down to every last word in that description perfectly. I don't know music like a composer or anything like that, but I can say that much about this theme for sure
I’ve always noticed, but the final boss’s music uses sound effects from salmon run
I like to think the disappearance on Bear with Me’s first half kinda mirrors the eradication of Salmonids by the hands (or pawsj of Mr Grizz
The music could’ve been intended to represent how crazy mr grizz actually is
I wouldn’t describe Mr. Grizz as “kind and gentlemanly”, myself.
Now for the real challenge, Calamari 3mix
The end of Splatoon 3 reminds me a lot of the end of Ace Combat Zero. Even has a world ending ICBM
I like it how it’s very weird and broken in the beginning but as it develops, it becomes a bop ngl
I love Anomoly Showdow, it's such an interesting tune! The start of it feels almost broken (to me) not only to play a motif to how broken Salmon Run tends to sound, but also perhaps to symbolize the player's confusion or even amusement at how goofy Grizz's plan sounds. Then, as the phases go on and get harder, the music becomes more coherent and understandable, even menacing in the final phase, as the player realizes just how much of a threat Mr. Grizz's plan is
You should look at the King Salmonid Theme in salmon run. There's a lot going on in the song and it would be an interesting one to analyze
He's done that one already :)
Here's the video! I didn't have a camera back then yet, so the video quality is a little worse, but still perfectly watchable! ruclips.net/video/C6E7GZTYMuI/видео.html
🗿Cant Wait!
An extra detail I haven't seen anyone mention yet, but the start of Phase 2 contains the motif for Fishing Frenzy. Look out for the bell like instrument, you'll recognize it soon enough
I dont know why but thinking about it
This tune reminds me of evolution
Taking out the off key keeping in the in tune until its perfect in phase 3
I’d love to eventually here some composer commentary of your own Splash! album, and it would double as promotion of an underrated collection 😉
I'd love to do that at some point, but I'm honestly not sure if many would be interested in hearing that... thank you! =D
i very much love this analysis of this theme since i enjoy this song a lot & now you’ve earned yourself an instant sub after checking out the rest of your channel & content
i love how his face just drops moments after the "bom"s start
I think my favorite bit about the evolution of the phases is how the vocals sound increasingly human or *mammalian* as the stakes get higher.
Great video!!! I didn’t watch all the stream, but I came here when I could. 15 minutes!!! That’s a new record!!! Keep it working!!!! That price’ll be yours!!
Thank you! Yeah, because of the length of this video I thought it could be fun to try doing a premiere for once! =D
Absolutely fascinating, loved the in depth musical analysis of the boss theme. Never noticed that about the 4 times faster bass notes for the 2nd stage! I love how the music progresses through each stage and easily my fave tune of the game.
honestly I've always heard the slight bit crush in the second and third phases sounding more organic. it sounds like a mess of gooey and crunchy bits of sound that resemble something... living, something that is alive and shouldn't be.
I've come back to watch these and noticed the titles have been updated due to the game actually giving these songs official names.
It's interesting to see you talk about the offbeat

4:54 I love how he started bopping, but then looked utterly confused😂
this theme really feels like a combination of singleplayer and salmon run music

this was absolutely awesome!! anomaly showdown is by far my favorite splatoon 3 song
NGL I lost it at that last segment.
listening to this song again i actually noticed a sort of deconstructed Deep Cut leitmotif at 11:55
it sounds similar to “Till Depth Do Us Part” opening notes, but i could be wrong. anyway thought that was cool

the beginning jingle reminds me of those soulless corporate videos lol i think it really fits
I think they made this design choice because Mr.Grizz is crazy
Great analysis! I also noticed that the motif in the beginning in c major, is also heard when you first start a shift and spawn in splatoon 2 salmon run. It's in c major and sounds extremely similar to splatoon 3's version.
god i love leitmotif in final boss themes ( kirby games use it a lot )
So this song is basically just the story of Mr. Grizz
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the distorted rhythm
I would be really interested to see what you think of some Mother 3 soundtracks
I'm not familiar with that soundtrack at all (I've been told my colleagues and friends that it's a must-listen soundtrack though), so would be very interesting to check out!

the interlude sounds like the beginning of bad guy and i cant get it out of my head
i like to think that offbeat is mr grizz thinking this is just childsplay. but when the 2nd phase happens he realizes… *ITS PERSONAL* but when phase 3 happens. he’s going full rage mode
The xylophone part of trying to work or against the other part. And then quitting is so interesting to me.

they really got Santa on the beat in this song fr
MR GRIZZ rolls WORST POLYRHYTHM EVER, asked to LEAVE EARTH
have you listened to the salmon run music? the in-game band that composes it, Omega-3, are pretty cool :)
I did, yeah! I've made videos on two of the tunes already actually, the one playing during special waves and King Salmonid =D
I was hoping you'd do this one! It's good, no?
I'm hoping you work a little on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet when they come out. Their music is composed by Toby Fox!
Could be interesting! Thanks for the suggestion.
I know the song is probably in 4/4, but honestly it makes more sense to me if it’s in 8/4 because it can fit the whole “Happy Little Workers” leitmotif in one measure. Unless I misunderstand how time signatures work
wonder if you’ll listen to any of the (..leaked) big run music. the “lobby” theme (fish cello splattack) is really haunting, which makes sense, because the salmonids have taken over the multiplayer maps
Yo they also play 'Happy Little Workers' in the Splatoon 3 Salmon Run lobby
could you analyze the three versions of the calamari inkantation? i think it’ll be really interesting to see how the song have changed between the game
At some point, I'll definitely do something like that, yeah!
Thanks for this, i suggested these songs in the past! Can you maybe do the calamari inkantation 3mix now?
You'll like the next video I'm working on at the moment 👀 Haha, it's still gonna take a few days though.
Do you think sometime you could go over the songs from Octo Expansion? There are a lot of really interesting (and albeit short) songs that id love to hear your opinion for. Also I want to hear what you say for my favorite tracks, #11 above and the remix of Splattack!
Potentially at some point, yeah! =D
Honestly this theme reminds me of "Puppet Offering" from Kirby Star Allies. So... discomforting. Unhinged in its own mind that its sanity is dispersing into nothing.
