I can't think of anybody else who shows in explicit detail how easily it is to do things like run rapidly down the wrong road of thought or miss something that should be obvious because of "click-through-itus". We've all been there, so these videos are kind of a celebration of the near insane level of passion with which we all approach our own individual projects. We can watch in near real time the triumphs and pitfalls that happen during Druaga's own projects and have a good laugh on that long road of discovery. "Normal" videos are dry and boring by comparison, with any humor being forced/artificially contrived for entertainment purposes. If you're looking for quick answers, you watch those kind of videos. If you want to kick back and have a good time, you watch Druaga. I like to kick back and have a good time, while learning a thing or two in the process... ;)
In fact, I think that mentality makes Druaga1's unique character that separates him from someone like LGR or PhilsComputerLab. I understand that it's stressful for Ian IRL, but it's what keeps both of us entertained.
me the type of guy replying to a comment on one of his 30+ computers with one internal hard drive outside the case, an internal optical drive that is not plugged in, a usb 3.0 card that needs molex power, my 3rd best cpu, has a usb hub for my keyboard and mouse that could just plug into the computer, a second monitor sitting on the desk, but isn't plugged into the graphics card that is capable of running two monitors, and not one but TWO random SATA cables lying in the case. beat THAT Duraga!
Druaga's friend: "Hey want to play some Doom at your house?" Druaga: "Yea sure." *gets to house* "So what do you want to play it on?" Druaga's friend: "What do you have Doom on?" *Druaga starts listing every single computer, os, and version of Doom he has on them*
And for Christmas we get a new long-form druaga video. Just what we needed. :D I wonder if you could get Xsan working on these things and set up a G4 super server thing. Fiber channel stuff could be fun
yeah I have a large Director brocade silkworm gonna put on,70kilometer limit for cabling attach, but radio xsat?

The Firefox download was so slow because the repository servers for the older Ubuntu release are purposely slowed down in comparison to the newer (supported) versions.
Merry Christmas to all the normal people, Merry Weedmas to Druaga! Also, your philosophy about creating videos is great! We all learn from our mistakes! Keep up the good work, Ian!
Nice. A tip for the "next time": You could try to tar (archive) the RootFS and dd just that magic HFS partition, where probably the bootloader config resides. You'd need to create the partitions yourself, though. That would allow you to just extract the files required instead of all the NULL bytes inside the image. Alternatively (with a little less hands-on), you could try using Clonezilla which uses partclone. Clonezilla is also available as a package for other Linux computers, so you don't need to boot the Mac Mini you want to put the image onto and instead just use the separate Linux computer like you were doing in the video. Another quick thought: There's a 14.04 (Trusty Thar) release of Lubuntu which might actually run a lot smoother on these old Macs. KDE is quite resource intensive to such old hardware, so you might get better performance with said Lubuntu release.
I second Clonezilla. Personally I prefer the live version of it as I've run into issues with the package version before but YMMV. Another great thing about Clonezilla is that it takes into account the file systems of the source/destination and will use that to drastically speed up copying, or it will just fall back to dd to clone stuff if it's an unknown/unsupported FS.
or you can trim the NULL from the image, then DD it... And I agree about Lubuntu, currently running it on an eMac G4 without lxsession, so just openbox and I use gmrun to launch stuff, I can have like 8 terminals, a cd ripping, midori, music playing in cmus and downloading packages and it doesn't choke.
Love you druaga! You inspire me everyday to work on and fix computers, even started a series on my channel about computers, again thanks for inspiration, merry Christmas!
The night before Christmas. All through the house. Nothing was stirring but that annoying mouse. The tree decorated with care. Ol' Saint Nic will have a good time. As I didn't play out cookies but Brownies instead. Yet with a sudden a sudden sound. I look at my RUclips Feed. And Dragua1 has posted. Sorry Ol' Nic but you have to wait. As he is the biggest Christmas Treat. Than, getting that new car. And with that with a howler and a cry, "Merry Christmas to all. And to all get high! Keep Smoking Smokers!"
What you said about "Looking stuff up" is so true... Half the random stuff we learn from computers is through finding solutions that come up when we're attempting to fix another problem we're experiencing. Looking stuff up takes the fun out of computers sometimes ;) Also here's an idea Druaga: make a home NAS with FreeNAS and make a video of the process. Also Merry Christmas everyone!
Soo.. I'd recommend copying smaller partitons (like 10GB) and then growing them when they're on destination. besides that, you should use lubuntu or just good old debian - KDE is bloaty. Merry Christmas, druaga.
if you wanna use the mac minis for raspberry pi level tasks I'd recommend getting a sometimes like debian with command line only, an actual desktop environment does waste a lot of resources when you have something a very low spec machine
David Tuomi from my experience kubuntu is actually pretty fast I was running it off of a SD card a pretty slow one and it was still very Snappy and it was on something slower
If you install mpv and youtube-dl, you can run "mpv [youtubeURL]" to play RUclips videos directly in a minimalist media player. I do it on my 4,1 MacBook all the time to play videos without the fan turning on.
Just use a youtube cli application or install an addon for firefox to open with mpv or use qutebrowser and type in ":bind m spawn mpv {url}" then press m.
Install Python Pip corresponding to the version of Python installed on your system, and then install mpsyt by the following command, `sudo pip install mpsyt` (youtube_dl must be installed as a dependency either from your distro repository or `sudo pip install youtube_dl). Run mpsyt, read basics and enjoy!
May i suggest installing LXLE on these machines ? I use it on several old Pentium 4 laptops and at least it is able to handle video playback on youtube.
If possible, look into turnkey for these. I don't know if it'll work, but turnkey is good for small server type stuff. They even have prebuilt isos for different purposes (owncloud, cms, etc), or just the core os. Debian based if I remember correctly. It's text based, no x server.
you said something about the "tips for creating an image flie" witch are those? Can somebody tell me? coz tommorow I'll get my new ssd and I want to know how to copy it over the eaziest way.
QBUS an .img file or image file is a perfect copy of a HDD, to clone a HDD to an SSD there are several options, I like macrium reflect as it is free and works well however d1 normally uses acronus true image, both of these solutions are bootable based on an embedded version of windows. Many guides are available online for both of these. I recommend looking at them both before you clone your drive
Kubuntu with the Plasma 4 desktop is not the best choice to install on old computers. It uses a lot of resources. You need something a lot more lightweight if you want to be able to use them for anything.
Hey Druaga, Kubuntu is kind of a heavy weight Ubuntu, you could try something like Ubuntu Mate or Lubuntu, and they still support PPC on a pretty recent release (16.04.3)
Brotip for everyone reading: in any modern Linux distro console, whenever you have a Y/n choice, the upper case one is the default one, and will be chosen in case you don't input your own. So when installing something via apt-get (now apt) just press enter, et voilà, one keystroke saved per installed app!
I'm 7.5 minutes in, and i have an early comment. ;) *sips more wine* I prefer to use the /dev/disk/by-id/ links, because i don't want to loose important data, again. Those links point to /dev/sdabc123, are human-readable, and uniquely identifiable. My /boot partition, for instance, is /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ADATA_SP900-SERIALNUMBER-part1, and it points to ../../sda1. Those symlinks make tasks so much easier, especially when i don't have the gnome-disk util, but want to put an ISO onto a USB stick - i just type …by-id/usb and tab-complete until i have the correct target device / partition.
such luck that Apple didn't make the target disk mode proprietary so you needed another mac to connect it to. Today they wouldn't give a fuck about keeping to established standards...
Try arch with a really lightweight window manager like i3! As far as I remember, Arch had a PPC build and i3 most probably has a PPC build as well. If that doesn't work, just fuck it and install gentoo!
You can also do a tarball of the root FS instead of DD. You just need to make the file systems and untar the tarball into the root partition. It will go MUCH faster than DDing the whole drive.
Kubuntu is NOT the OS to run on a Mac Mini G4. Ubuntu MATE is a reasonable option, as early as 2016, and maybe if you could get the assistance of AkBkuku, he can help you set up Gentoo Linux! **screaming to the heavens about Gentoo live compiling**
Why don't you put one I target disk mode and have the fastest unit doing the install over firewire. You you could just clone the drives or you could put the install on an USB flash drive and do it that way .
You could probably mount the image as a filesystem, then shrink it with GParted to have an image that's about 2gb big. That will go a lot quicker. But you do have to resize the partitions afterwards. Also, KDE is a pretty heavy interface, things like XFCE (Xubuntu) or LightDesktopEnvironment (LDE Lubuntu) might give you a lot more performance. Archlinux is even lighter, but use it only if you don't mind headaches since it's only text and doesn't have an installer (you pretty much have to make the system folders yourself and download the files in them)
For media consumption on older PCs it's better if you donwload the entire video. You can do this with FlashGot on Firefox 56 or less (no port to WE yet, sadly). Firefox ESR is a good thing to install for the time being.
Do these have slow optical drives or something? In my experience, installing off of optical media is usually worth the trouble especially with multiple computers and it can be impressively fast. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I rarely save more than five minutes when installing from USB. I know you aren't using USB, but I think it still makes my point. And two hours? It's never taken more than 20 minutes for any Linux installation via optical drive. Even Windows XP only takes about half an hour to install from an optical disk. I'm pretty surprised that you went this route. It does make a great video though. 😁
Would have to be faster to actual install than DD every drive, surely. USB SD card adapter with the installation image on it would be faster than CD. If you're not even using a gui then you could have the system itself installed onto an SD.
If you watched the RemixOS video, you will know that he doesn't like to use USB drives because he will want to either keep the images or back them up and it takes up space.
Matija Tomic i did it a while ago so what i'l say is just pure memory but you have to acces the open firmware wich you need to hold like 5 keys at boot then do a lot of terminal commands to like find your usb and then boot into it. I think you can also boot normally using the sort of boot manager but if i remember correctly it only works with some usbs i tested that about a year ago so sorry if i'm not helping much Also the boot manager often hangs when booting it just stays on a pure white screen. Edit: here are the steps i talked about with open firmware ben-collins.blogspot.be/2010/08/booting-your-ibook-g4-from-usb-stick.html?m=1
Something you should probably know before you try to do anything with Ubuntu 12.04 is that it reached EOL earlier this year. It doesn't get updates anymore, and you won't be able to install most software until you upgrade.
Hey druaga, slow downloading from repositories is not normal. At least here in Brazil, it downloads awmost instantly (well.. i have optic fibre with 100mb/s download speeds) but even with a 1mb/s plan it still is faster than that.
I have tried plain ol' Debian on the G4 mini. It really is pathetic in terms of performance, which, given the G4's old-for-its-time bus architecture, is not too surprising. You have to use a G5 to have a prayer of watching RUclips decently on PowerPC today. I guess we're now getting to the point where even Core 2 Duos, such as what is in the earliest Intel-based minis, struggle with that.
About copying zeroes, you could probably do things faster if you just imaged the partitions themselves and copied those, with the partitions made as small as possible so it's mostly ones.
Totally agree with your philosophy as to why you make your videos. Keep it up.

well, KDE is pretty much GPU heavy like gnome, so he would be better off with xubuntu or lubuntu
I would have gone Solus with the MATE desktop.
Debian. You can choose which, if any, desktop to install on it. LXDE or Xfce would be good for such a low-power, low-memory machine.

Looks awfully like Lubuntu to me, Druaga. Happy New Year!

Haha the wonders of DD.

replikvlt well some distros stopped making ppc builds, as there is little demand.
I'm pretty sure that ubuntu mate 16.04 has a ppc build though.
Merry christmas
Can you do a video for netbooting all G4 mac mini's to Kubuntu
you should try do a cluster of the mac mini
Working on the carpet in winter!
Why kubuntu of all the linux distros ? I only know one Linux distro that would have been worse: gentoo.
i love your intro, thats so me lol

thanks 4 da vid druaga, smoke weed everyday!
You need linux without GUI if you just want to some automation and stuff
Kde makes it slow
I'd use xfce or lxde(xfce is way better but a little heavier)
