How can I print in black ink. Color ink cartridges empty

To ensure print quality, Epson printers draw a small amount of ink from all ink sources to keep the print head clear so nozzles don’t clog. While you may only be printing black, a fraction of color ink is being used. If you have any additional questions, please let us know.
The key reason I won't buy another Epson printer. I was short on cash a while ago and just wanted to print some plain black and white text pages. I had a full XL size black ink in the printer, but nope. You have to shell out for all 5 colors to use the thing. It's ridiculous. And today I wanted to print something in plan black, not a photo, and could not print as I was out of the photo back. Again, ridiculous. To use up my black ink I had to buy a colour set for things that require no colour.

This printer sucks. Says this even when there is plenty of ink left. replaced with new ones and it says the same thing. You spent more time troubleshooting this than actually printing anything.
